Knowing that he is a dead man and the authorities will be after him or his family, he and his wife split up. Probably why he struggles to land an honest job lol. So the split up i think is justified to keep his wife safe, allow her who is innocent to live a normal life and pay for his mistakes since she is an elite and would probably ruin her reputation, tho they both seem like they want to get back together eventually
