Recently I purchased a collapsable stool for my painting setup and I absolutely love it! I wanted to share a quick image I took this morning... Soon this will be up on our website for sale, along with the Pochade Palette and Carrying Case offered as a combo deal.
One of the most important aspects of plein air painting is the need to keep your setup extremely light. When you are out in nature you do not want to be weighed down by heavy equipment, as this can limit your mobility and make it difficult to move around to find the perfect spot to paint.
It is important to carefully consider the equipment you will need, that's why we came up with the design for Pochade Palette. You should always choose a setup that is as lightweight as possible; including your palette and brushes. Keep in mind your canvas or gessoed paper as well. These can add significant weight, or lack thereof, as is the case with sketching on paper.
Another important consideration when it comes to painting outdoors is the need to be prepared for changing weather conditions (if you are traveling and maybe out all day long...)You should bring extra stuff like a rain jacket or extra layers for the cold winters! As well as maybe thinking about sunscreen and some bug spray, can't hurt.
Keeping your gear light is not only important for your comfort, but it can also impact the quality of your painting. When you are not weighed down by bulky equipment, you are able to move around freely, which can help you find the perfect spot to paint from! This was extremely important for me while we were living on the cape and painting in the wind quite often. As a result the Pochade Palette allowed me the possibility for more interesting compositions.
Painting from life is more difficult although can be super rewarding, so keeping your gear extremely lightweight is essential, as it allows you to move freely and capture your composition, even on a wet rocky coast or super windy and freezing trail:)
