Work in progress (Portrait Update) and new series

Here is an image from last night after 4 hours on the painting. I've been enjoying this process and even though it is difficult at times, you can see how the color harmony comes together.

I build the painting up in layers, that is why I prefer to paint in short sessions; 4 one hour sessions, instead of 1 three to four hour sessions.

I have a long way to go on this to make it successful, but for now I will take a pause and let the work speak to me in the studio. I will continue on the demonstration series in the future.

March we will start a new series of demos aimed at helping you understand some basic principles. If you have suggestions please leave a comment below.

Hi Raquel, hope you enjoy the demo that was posted just now on glass. if you have any questions let me know!

Michael Klein

I really admire the way you paint glass, and would be interested in a demo on this, although a demo on anything would be very insightful!

Chiho, thank you! It has been a great way to illustrate how I think about painting, often I try to explain these concepts in workshops but come up short. I notice students will continually look at nature and expect a 1:1 comparison and result. There is a lot of room for inventing and being creative in representational art than most people believe.

I find what you have painted with the 19th century’s photographs super interesting. Rich and vibrant colour and brushworks as well as compositions are not painting like 1 to 1 copies of real life (or photographs from real life). There are imagination, speculations and etc. (sorry for poor language skills) yet all makes real sense…fascinating!

Thanks Vicki

Great brushwork Michael
