What would you like to see on my Patreon?

Very simply, I’d love to know what YOU would like to see me cover on my page.

I’ve been running this page for almost five years and done 270+ posts (phew! Have you checked out them all, browsed to the very bottom?) and I obviously have a long list of things planned and coming.

But now YOU can have a say, so let me know what you’d like to see me cover around these parts!

EXAMPLE: One new video idea I’ve been having: producers could send me tracks and I’d make a video about then commenting on them (mix/production/idea). A bit like Timbalands similar vids. I’d of course need some tunes from some of you :)

How about a series similar to breakbeat of the month, that explores the origin of classic rave sounds. This could go into where the sample originated or what synth it came from etc… (like the Reese, Hoover etc…)

Pete

I really would appreciate if you could do breakdowns of DnB classics and what hardware / instruments were used.

Hi Fanu ! I literally devour your mixing posts on the patreon. I love it, you share so much precious knowledge and you are so nerdy about music and audio engineering it's so nice. There are a lot of videos talking about kick and bass on internet, and obviously it is the most important elements in house music (for example) so it's one of the reason why we get a lot of these. It could be really interesting to talk about leads and how to make them fit in the mix, on what octave/frequencies the fundamental is lying, what are the sounds that we find in a lot of famous house tracks, can the waveform of the sound be complex (therefore has a lot of harmonics and fills a large frequency band for one note played), can the complex waveform sound plays on multiple octaves/notes to create harmonies and does it make the clarity worst ? You can also talk a bit about layering leads because it is used a lot in professional tracks to add depth and make the overall sound more interesting. Maybe these questions can be answered by analysing famous house tracks.

I still find it difficult to know when I've pushed a break too loud, sometimes it's hard to know when it's over-processed. How do you know where to stop? Maybe you can work that into the month breakbeat videos. Often this is in the context of a reference which will seem louder and somehow clearer and punchier.

Already have some material from patrons lined up for public critique; it will come 😎

Janne Hatula

yeah I love this idea !

Many good ideas here – thank you, well noted! As for transients, I'd say, just don't touch them by default. The problem with some ppl's mixing (obv not referring to you) is they think that this and that has to be done by default: HP/LP filtering, transients emphasis, compression, multiband comp etc etc...I know this based on talks with many producers whose mixed ive done feedback on. And I always say, no no, don't even use those – because mixes often need way less of modern processing that many ppl think! There is so much info online by "experts" that say you have to use this and that and a lot of times it's because theyve been paid by companies to showcase their tools etc. Honestly, good natural mixing *mostly* takes good EQ and levels, and with those, it is at least 50%-70% there, and the rest is just sweetening, and that sweetening should often be quite light, too. So my answer to "How not to overcook your transients?" might be something to have producers think, like, "Why would you touch that transient tool in the first place?"

Janne Hatula

I'd like to see videos about not overcooking your transients, because I'm extremely guilty of this (and have gotten feedback that my best work is where I just throw drums/percussion into a project and then do nothing to it.) I'd also like to hear your take on adding effects/details, and whether you make them yourself, resample the project audio to make them, or go on a sample hunt through your own folders/Splice/Loopcloud. I've joked recently that I'm allergic to adding FX, but I'm really just allergic to finishing my tracks. 😂 Seriously, though, do you have any kind of checklist or organized approach that you follow in order to make sure your tracks are finished? I find that last 10% of polishing work to be daunting, and knowing what kinds of questions you ask yourself when finishing tracks would be helpful.

Some collective sample pool might be dope! Thinking of how to do that…hmmm!

Janne Hatula

I have a sick phat break coming up on Breakbeat Of The Month episode I’ll share and do downtempo with 👌🏻

Janne Hatula

produce other genres from chopped breaks.. like downtempo and broken-beat/nu-jazz

Curry Sinatra

Easy. Would like to hear about your outboard integration into your DAW? And i really enjoyed BBOTM. How about asking your community to submit breaks for a sample pack? Otherwise, more of the same. It's all good.

Mat Red Sky

yeah, I did think that!

One new video idea I’ve been having: producers could send me tracks and I’d make a video about then commenting on them (mix/production/idea). A bit like Timbalands similar vids. I’d of course need some tunes from some of you :)

Janne Hatula

I’ve put out a few kick sample downloads via my Patreon. Every now and then I’ve also hooked up patrons on producer tiers with some extras :) The limiter (/clipper) thing is on my list and is coming! 😎

Janne Hatula

The only reason I haven’t done this (and I hope I don’t sound lazy) is it takes so much more camera work and more complex setups. I wish I had a camera crew. Not saying no to this though!

Janne Hatula

Oh yeah, could easily do this. I could dissect so much stuff. Good shout…let’s do this!

Janne Hatula

Can you share a handful of go to kicks for house music (john summit style) that you think would work well, or even just 1 kick. also.. how do I decide how hard to push the limiter on my master bus? should I put a compressor on there also? I'm mostly using ozone, so id be keen to see how you would use just ozone to master a track

paul stone

I'd like to see how you work with outboard gear in your workflow. I have a few bits and always find latency troubles and other hurdles put me off using it.

Ben Hill

maybe some mixing & mastering vids would be cool 👍🏻 Loads on YT but not many when it comes to mastering dnb :)

Mark Merola

Do you mean peak limiting? 99-100% of peaks I handle with my two master limiters. *Sometimes* I limit drums and bass 1-3 dB but in 90% of the stuff, master limiter handles it all. Hearing ppl’s mixes I’d say it’s also important to not overcook your transients (way too common) to not generate problems with them in the first place. Also do see my latest video on mixing the bass!

Janne Hatula

Hi Fanu. A breakdown on how to mix and balance the peaks of a track. Say for instance you solo’d just the transients of some of your mixes. You can do this with ozone eq 11. It’s a really tricky part of mixing for me. Also Chris airwindows had a plug-in called peaksonly. I would just like to know how to get the correct amount of energy. Or you maybe haven’t even thought about this and I’m overthinking it. Kind regards. Mark Uk 🇬🇧
