Breakbeat Of The Month #6: an underrated break – techstep DNB time! [video + downloads]

Uncle Fanu promised to get back to the breaks in September, and he's not one to eat his words, so here we go!

This is a very unknown break, but hey now you know it!
"Paa Break" by Didier's Sound Spectrum.

Great for DNB and this'd work well in hip hop (hey been there done that <-link)

The break (trimmed) … do get the album! …and its .asd file if you want it

🗣I hope everyone's well!

• I've just had a 10-day staycation finishing mixing+mastering my 10-track album. Comes out around March in 2025 on Straight Up Breakbeat (vinyl takes time; hence the wait).
• Also somewhat finished a weird house music type EP which will be called HAUS EP Vol. 3 and I'll prob release that late 2024 to the disgust of many ppl only expecting DNB from me.
• Also about to send to the distribution a 10-song DNB compilation, "Breakbeat Brigade", on my Lightless label, coming out Oct 4.

Returning to my usual client work tomorrow, and got 18 clients in the queue, so don't you worry if the next video/post ain't happening super soon: it's this "positive problem" of being super booked. I won't lie, gotta tackle some 🗻 of work. That's my day job. But I'll do a new BBOTM soon and there's a lot of stuff lined up. Wanted to do this for ya'll before burying my head in the workpile.

❗️I recently broke the all-time high number of actually paying members.
❤️ I appreciate you all and your support. The best thing you can do to help me grow is tell your friends about my Patreon. The better it goes, the more amped I always am to make more content!

Thank you Fanu that worked

Jamie

The .adg rack doesn't and cannot contain audio. It only refers to it and expects to find it. This is why you have to have it locate it. Click on the nagging that appears at the orange bottom bar, and this'll open this column view on the right hand side. You can drag the audio I linked you to that field OR click on the magnifying glass icon and then point to the file. Lmk if this doesnt work :)

Can anyone help me? when i drag the paa break rack.adg file into ableton theres no audio in the rack? what am i doing wrong?

Jamie

I don’t worry too much remembering to offset the midi; I’ll probably hear it at this point if something is off and I’ll go nudge it till it sounds right :)

Janne Hatula

sick sick break!

Mark Soo

Thanks for the break. The tip regarding bits of Hi Hats before kicks is also useful to know. Don't you find remembering to offset the midi accordingly when programming a ballache? (Probably not lol) Now I know to retain those bits of hi hats, I'm gonna add a postive sample trigger offset in my drum sampler, so I can have the midi fully quantised.

Stephers

Yeah man! One can flip it in many ways. I think hip hop guys would eat it up if they knew.

Janne Hatula

man theres so many bits here that you can just loop and get dope beats out of

Curry Sinatra

Also, awesome video. Really looking forward to getting stuck into this break and trying that filthy bass sound 🤌

Here is Polarity analyzing the Ableton drum bus in terms of the tonal curve applied: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AilpDA2iTFY Might be useful.
