Paint by numbers much? Why your mix lacks power reason 5/9.

Some people are lazy (I'm lazy too, with some things, like cooking).

They'd like to paint (mix) by numbers and adjust their mixer levels for elements based on what someone is telling them. This may not work out.

Here's my best explanation, with audio, why it may not be "the bomb".

Reason 6 will be one of the best mix self-help tips I can give you, and I do mean it.

Yeah I mean, a good example: I just did a big mix+master for majors (Warner). They only want the loud versions (extended and radio), but no “streaming version”.

FWIW I rarely compress my drums 🎚️👌🏻😋 I think it’s always been a part of my sound both as producer and engineer that drums are chunky, and compression can often hurt that.

If you want a kick loud, just raise its level. Clipper shouldn’t be thought of as a level tool per se imho.

Janne Hatula

A method to get it loud, but you answered that in a prior video, sorry I was watching series back to front

Let's start with a question: why would I?

Janne Hatula

Hi Fanu, why you no clip kick?

Dubdamain

Cool haha, works for me. Thanks

Glad you like! Short, boring answer: no, I don't really do different levels for different services. I've def done a bit of research on this, and other engineers don't really do it either (I could kind of lecture a bit on this, but end result/answer would be the same) :)

Another banger vid. I have just been going through practicing matching kick level to reference tracks instead of -6 or -8 or whatever garbage. Sad how much I have to be reminded just to use my damn ears lol. Somewhat related question about mastering: when you're doing a master and hitting "target LUFS" I guess to a reference track, do you ever do separate masters/levels for different streaming services? I have seen various presets in metering plugins (thinking of Waves WLM) for like "Soundcloud" "Spotify" etc etc. But don't the services just turn it to whatever volume they feel? Should I be doing separate masters for different services? A bit unrelated sorry haha but still in the "levels" discussion. Thanks!

Just what I needed to hear as I struggle with yet another mixdown. Honestly, I’m starting to get an idea of just how many times of messing it up are necessary to develop a good ear for these things - and it’s an awful lot! 😅 I have started to listen more for groove, so I can now hear when I’ve compressed the life out of my drums 🙃😂
