Side signal smoothing! [mixing video]

It's time to talk about side signal mindfulness.

In my daily work, I hear a lot of audio where everything has been made really wide. It is effortless to make things wide today, but making sure the side signal isn't too much is another matter.

In this video, I'm going through some of my main thinking and plugins I use for cleaning up the side signal, starting with transients, then moving on to EQing.

Let's keep the side signal smooth!

Any Qs, holla!

Yessir, those are the ones I use. Sometimes I use SoundID correction with them.

I often have Soothe and Spiff just before my final limiters. But I mess with sides on tracks too, and also the first thing on my master is an EQ that also addresses sides a bit. I often have Ableton Utility to boost width (it raises existing width but won’t generate it) early on the master.

In a Mixing / Mastering scenario if you did have all the elements ready to go, would add the width + treatment to the sides after you've done your mixbus/stereo bus work (eq/comp/limiting) or before? I could see this working after mixbus processing and just before my final limiters. Where do you like to add width? Great insights again mate!
