2024! Short Studio Masterclass episode 4 [video + an unreleased DNB tune]

Happy 2024 everybody!

As promised, here is a brand new Short Studio Masterclass video for you.
I've been working on a song on my holiday using Bitwig Studio. The video isn't very Bitwig-specific (I'm still learning. Would you like to see more Bitwig antics by the way?)

Also, you will get an unreleased song: download Free Fall (WIP).
If the song gets signed, I will remove the link!

Topics and timecodes:

(I do talk about more things as I go, but these are the main ones):
• 5:50 Clipping the bass
• 9:50 Bass XXL
• 11:40 multiband processing
• 14:00 about kick/bass separation
• 18:00 Soothe – what does it do and how to use it?
• 24:00 Transitional elements
• 32:54 Drumworks / Bitwig clip stuff
• 44:04 Bitwig distortion + why and how to create "a gain rack" (<- not DAW-specific)

By the way, if I'm correct, this is my 200th Patreon post! Stoked.
It's been a great run, and I'm more encouraged than ever, I won't lie!

Once again, want to thank everybody for the ongoing support. Rocking this Patreon thing has been one of the best decicions I've made in my career.

BTW do you have any new year's resolutions? Me, not really, other than trying to keep it as good as it was in 2023.  Also, would love to hear your thoughts on what you'd like to see me cover.

PS: I'm officially returning to work in a week, on Jan 8, and can then start scheduling stuff for one-to-one sessions etc again. Taking off one more week before the usual work madness begins!

These are so good man. I absolutely love that you're using bitwig too. You're my goto anymore when I need to learn something new. Yes please more bitwig!!

Nice :) At a 4.5 slope, I notice many tracks seem to place peak sub and peak tops (around the 10-12k region) at a similar level. Obv won't line up the same way if I have my slope sent to 3!

Mark Soo

I have always used 4.5 slope!

Janne Hatula

great video, learned a lot! just one basic question, and i remember you addressed it somewhere in the past (but i can't remember where now), but what slope do you have span set to? 3 seems to correspond to flat pink noise and is common, but 4.5 is also really useful for bass music i feel.

Mark Soo

Yeah there is a lot you can do; it's a whole new world, comparing to my "mother tongue", Ableton Live. I will make a video of the greatness of BWS audio once I grasp it all well enough. Wishing you a productive 2024!

Janne Hatula

I love the operators though and the fact you can apply them to MIDI and audio makes for some very interesting edits. Happy new year dude!

Yeah the audio editing side of things is much deeper. I still have to learn it better though; I don't understand it well enough to use its full potential. And I agree: it doesn't make sense that you actually have to enable stretching to pitch things. That was something I was scratching my head for a while the other day, like, "How the heck do I pitch audio?" and realized it cannot be done without enabling stretch algorithm.

Janne Hatula

This is an awesome video and I am loving seeing more Bitwig content. What are your thoughts on audio editing in Bitwig? I really like how they have separated the audio content from the clip container, I think this works particularly well in the 'Session' view. On the flip side though, I really don't like how audio is represented with a filled-in wave form and I can't believe you can pitch audio by semitones without applying a time-stretching algorithm.
