Ableton Live 12 features…it's a huge update! [video, 30 mins]

Wanted to do a high-level checkout, but it's still 30+ mins....phew.
This is by far the biggest Live update I've ever seen...it's huge, and I'm not just saying that.
Been using it for months now myself, being in the Ableton alpha team.

I'm STOKED about this one.

This was all unscripted: I thought we (alpha testers and certified trainers) would hear about a date when it's announced, so would have a little bit of time to plan a video. Well, at least I wasn't aware of a date, so as I saw the accouncement today, started *immediately* fiming this so my community would get it all fresh <3

Some of the features are subject to change before release, and some things (like global scale feature) may not work 100% as expected yet. Also there will be microtuning (so I'm sure Aphex Twin will be an Ableton user, haha), but I'm not sure it works yet...maybe I'll cover some of that later. But even this is a lot. Hope you can sit thru it.

Enjoy!

Any Qs? Ask me, and I'll try to answer!

mixer: opt + cmd + m clip view: opt + cmd + 3 device view: opt + cmd + 4 bonus: opt-clicking on an arrow on the bottom panel will show/hide both clip and device views; i dont think there is a shortcut that handles both. they removed the good old opt+cmd+L to show/hide the bottom panel :/

can you walk us/me through the process of which Mac Keyboard shortcuts to press to get the Midi clip, Device View and Track Mixer view all displaying?

Hey, good news: seems to work the way you'd like now!

Janne Hatula

One constant pain point for me has been the mixer. Namely: when you select a track in the Arrangement view that same track gets selected in the Mixer in the Session view BUT the view doesn't scroll there. So if you had a lots of tracks then you still need to find the track. (which is anoying, slow and can be difficult as it's not always easy to see which track is actually selected) I wonder if the new stacked Mixer view brings any improvement on this?

One feature Ive wanted them to add for several versions is a dang refresh button for browser. Any time I add samples to my folders it takes forever to wait for it to scan and find them...or for it to even think about scanning. On very rare occasions files will show up pretty fast, but quite often...might as well go for a drive and get some coffee and something to eat while waiting. If they would just add that speedy refresh like FL Studio has I'd be happy. Anything that prevents an inspired artist from making a beat should be prioritized for fixing. In the heat of it at the moment too. Been waiting close to 10 minutes for a newly added GoldBaby library to show up. I have doubts, but would be cool if Live 12 finally address this. [EDIT]: What's hilarious is I just opened FL up while waiting for Live to scan. Zero wait time. And refresh is instant. I'm sitting hear laughing as I drag samples from the Browser in FL directly onto TAL Drum pads in Live. lol

It's by Mystery Islands; I've mostly used it to be able to futureproof/store patches. It can do editing. They are still updating it, so should work good! https://auraplugins.com/products/

hey Fanu - I noticed you have an Access Virus editor in your VST's during this vid. I'm looking for something reliable to edit a Virus B Rack - any recommendations? cheers

Thanks for your input.

I have no factual info, but I’d find it odd if it didn’t happen for Push – I mean it’s supposed to run the latest officially released software.

Janne Hatula

Thank you for making this video. Do you know if Push 1 & 2 will be compatible with Live 12? I couldn’t find any information about that…

Jonathan Vesin

This looks insanely good, I need to grab this while the 20% discount is on

hologroove

That is a good Q; didnt think of that. Prob not, but let me check!

Janne Hatula

So much here! Does it do anything nice with auto-categorising samples? Like the ones in user library

Thought to myself the other day, it’s an insane time to be alive in terms of all music tech!

Janne Hatula
