About breakbeats and transitional energy in songs [video]

Working on another song idea, I wanted to share some thoughts regarding distributing the energy in a song, this time mostly relating to using a breakbeat but also some other song elements.

Survival Drum Kit?

Edgars Rutkovskis

They are from a drums pack by Survival (I believe it was given away for free many years ago, if I recall correctly)

Janne Hatula

Yeah man☺

Edgars Rutkovskis

Do you mean to ask what samples I used for layering?

Janne Hatula

what is a kick and snare samples?

Edgars Rutkovskis

Glad you dig it :) Whenever I use AD2, I usually use it by itself, so dont do layering etc. I very recently did a walkthru video of a hip hop beat of mine called Slow Progress where I'm checking it out a bit.

Great stuff, Fanu! Seeing your approach to break processing and drum layering is always cool. Everyone into producing this style of music is trying to get their drums sounding on point, so the knowledge you drop is appreciated. I know you mentioned Addictive Drums a few videos ago. It would be excellent to see how that is incorporated into your process.

Everything that can first heard in the 16 bars are original to the break. I really love long breaks that offer tonal variation! I’m only adding some thickening elements in the second 16 bars.

Hats ftw, Janne! I also love the energy added by the ‘clangy’ snare tones, the ones that sound like louder accents in each bar and really push the groove forward. You use that strategy very effectively in other songs also, like Firemind. Always wondered: are those snares original to the break, or do you create them by processing one or more of the snares you are already using in your pattern?

Different break! The one you mentioned uses Bernard Purdie’s “Soul Drums” (I used that on “Witchcraft”)

Janne Hatula

hey, what is the name of the artist whose breaks you really like? deathboy? i couldn't quite hear what you said

Curry Sinatra

Reminds me of the early not-so-successful "Battle Of The Soul Drums"
