Chopping Science! Redux part 1: chopping + FX [video]

Chopping Scientists need to know about good tools for chopping ✂️

If there's something that'll always get me all stoked, it's good samplers.

Redux sampler offers very fast and light choppery. This is one of my favourite tools to chop up a drumbreak really quickly. Obviously it can be used for ANY samples.

I'm also showing you how the FX work and unravelling the modulation side of things.

Also at the end, I'm having a great moment of teaching where I learn something new about it in terms of what can be done and what not…so you don't have to  learn the hard way, uh-oh! These happen to all teachers at some point, ha!

Also at the very end, I'm mentioning and showing what's also coming: you'll get a phat little sound taster (HINT: Luke Vibert would like it).

Hope you dig it!

Great! 👍🏻

cheers...pretty sure I'll pick this up. Also found you can rename the hits by using the "render samples destructively" oslt after you've chopped the hits on the first sample of the whole break

zeroalpha_nz

found it...under the effects tab "routing"

zeroalpha_nz

I THINK the effects page has an output column!

Janne Hatula

Ez Fanu...hey do you know where to assign a hit to a different output channel in redux? eg snares to output 2?

zeroalpha_nz

Nice one! Will do Redux/Renoise acid video before the year is over :)

Janne Hatula

I picked up Redux yesterday and am psyched to dive into this weekend. This video is a great jumping-off point.

This is exactly the content I've been looking for. I've been playing around with Renoise and I love the sampler and the tracker-style drum programming but for everything else I prefer Ableton, so I've been messing around a bit with the Redux demo to see if I could get a bit of the best of both worlds. However, I didn't see too much content on youtube on it. Thanks for this.

Hell yes. Been messing with renoise again so this is great too see

I just wish Ctrl+Z controlled Redux's undo while using the plugin GUI too. Its a very delicate process using the plugin. Watch all my work go poof in an instant if I forgot not to press it

Shane Newville

Have to check if Native Battery, Kontakt and Maschine can do that

Gregster

Yes, one reason why one wants to loop a drumsound is that it doesn't cut short. Pingpong looping < > with a bit of added crossfade is always so much better-sounding than the usual > > style of looping!

Janne Hatula

I never heard of that Pingpong sampling thing. Why are you doing this. To fill the gabs?

Gregster

good to know, thanks :)

Janne Hatula

protip in da house! now i know!

I think it’s more that on Abe/Bitwig virtual keyboard the pc keyboard z/x maps to up/down octave and A is the note C. When the Redux keyboard is active z is C and A is not off and so on

Andrew Hollis

Hi, mate. Here is the topic about octave difference: https://forum.renoise.com/t/octave-mismatch-between-ableton-and-redux/43507

Andrei Marchenko

Cool vid :) pro tip destructive render slice then you could add your bass :)
