Let's create techstep DNB beats! (Alien Girl drums) [25-minute video]

I recently did a nice session with a patron using a drumloop he gave me, which is the original drumloop that was used in the classic Alien Girl tune by Ed Rush, Optical and Fierce.

So here's me having a go with it, layering things a bit and doing some analog-modeled processing to glue the drums together more and add some energy and dirt to the sound.
Let's get that low-level signal up for added body and full tone.

25 minutes of drumbreak nerdery, here you go!

I'd also recommend DrumSlam by Airwindows: it's their emulation of a great old saturation (Tapehead by Massey) I used to use (it's not available as a modern plugin anymore, but the Airwindows one is a good alternative).

hey man, one thing that worked pretty well for me: I am really into the end of 90s sound but never had a Mackie desk or an EMU sampler. Turns out that you can nail that vibe very well with the airwindows plugins: Mackity, MackEQ, ZLowPass, ZBandPass, etc. https://www.airwindows.com/mackity/ https://www.airwindows.com/zlowpass2/

This was very interesting and helpful. Will definitely try out to use the techniques in my own productions. I would also be very interested into some content about making Techstep midbass wobbles and bass stabs. My midbasses and bass stabs are often way to clean and don’t have the typical techstep dirtyiness

Awesome stuff. Automating the gate threshold for changing the vibe of the background rumble is definitely something I'm gonna try.
