Let’s talk about MAKING SONGS! “86 North” walkthrough video

While there is a lot of technical info out there, there’s much less info on the philosophy of making songs. Ironic or not, finishings songs seems to be a hurdle for many while a lot of the tech that goes into it is available for all.

Sp, I wanted to have a session discussing song structures, my philosophy on getting enough material for a song, progression etc.

It's not fully finished yet; I'll prob do an outro and it'll end up on one of my releases one day.

EDIT: Song came out titled “86 North” on my Balcony Acid EP on HeadsState.

I hope this can be helpful in terms of helping people with their song structures, sections, how to introduce variation for sounds and so on.

These days doing this is part of my living, and I’m very happy to help producers with everything they need!

I think there is filter on/off, filter freq, and seems to be some parameters to amp envelope like decay, and also some stuff relating to OSCs, so changing the sound a bit etc. How many drum parts: depends. Currently doing a song with one main break and two layers – prob releasing the video of that project tomorrow btw.

Really helpful video, thanks. 🙏 At 43:03, you unfold the automation on the main chords, and there are like 6 or 7 lanes of automation! Aside from the filter automation, is it just gain and send automation? Just trying to workout how so much automation on on instrument is necessary/adds much. Finally, how many different drum parts do you normally write for the main drums? I think in the past I’ve overcomplicated things by having too many drum parts, which can sound a bit disparate.
