New video SOON! + ask me a question!
Added 2020-06-05 16:26:07 +0000 UTCOi guys!
I hope everyone's feeling goooood entering the weekend and working on some studio stuff.
Me, just opened a classy brew after a long studio work week, working on some beats.
Two things:
1) new video coming SOON – a nice little mixing tip using a plugin many of you prob have
2) Ask me a music production related question in this topic, and I'll try and reply soon! (unless it's a biggie along the lines of, "How does the world work?", hehe.
Anyways, make yourself known and holla! :-)

Feel free to be more specific about this; I'm not sure I fully understand the (possible) problem here etc 🤔

2020-06-08 07:31:11 +0000 UTCNice! This would be really appreciated. I've had a 0.0dB limiter on my master out for ages, but this pretty much leads me to having to have a -15dB Utility - when rendering to wav instead of live situations - before the limiter, to make sure the rendered wavefile is not a brickwall. Would love to figure out a better way.

2020-06-08 07:17:09 +0000 UTCOi man! Weekend's been good; hope it's been good there too! Actually, this might make for a pretty decent video topic, and it's definitely be faster to show and tell instead of type. Will put this on my to-do video list and do this fairly soon…thanks for the idea :)

2020-06-07 05:56:54 +0000 UTCHey man, hope you're enjoying your weekend. You probably answered that many times, but what does your template for new projects consist of? For instance do you have auto-leveler + limiter on master by default, or do you consider it a bad practice? What about sends and individual tracks?

2020-06-06 17:08:54 +0000 UTCThe aforementioned phase shift/distortion is caused by minimal phase plugins (as opposed to linear phase). All Live's plugins are minimum phase; i.e., it doesn't have linear phase plugs. Minimum phase plugins are good for mixing for sure. Just avoid some super drastic cuts, in a nutshell.

2020-06-06 05:58:19 +0000 UTCWhich native Ableton plugs would you recommend for HP or Shelf? Can native Ableton effects be used for this at all, or do they cause (something), if so, what do they cause?

2020-06-05 19:43:59 +0000 UTCI use both. E.g., for vox, to completely remove mic rumble, I ruthlessly highpass it. For synths, to make them less muddy, always shelf. I find shelves sound way more natural, and – I admit I'm not a DSP guy and would love to be corrected if need be – I believe highpassing causes way more phase distortion, especially if it's steep, around the cutoff frequency. That's why I find it's ok to HP a vocal in mixing around 60 hertz, as there's nothing useful there. Every now and then I receive tracks for a mix, I do a project, and end up thinking, "This somehow sounds slightly thin", and I ask the producer, "Any chance you have highpassed all tracks a bit?" and in those cases, the answer is often, "Yes", and I ask for non-highpassed tracks, and the result is immediately better. So, use as needed!

2020-06-05 17:56:21 +0000 UTCHi J-P! I hope your week has been good too :) I can't always say I have super productive weeks, as my day job (mixing and mastering) takes a lot of my energy for my own productions, but I try to have a least 2-3 "OK" sessions per week, only concentrating on strong material. You, enjoy your weekend too, and stay in touch! :)

2020-06-05 17:53:27 +0000 UTCHey hey. Happy Friday! :) Something I have been wondering: For removing low-end frequencies from a sound, do you typically use a low shelf, or a high pass filter? I have seen that various producers strongly advocate for one or the other and I'm not really sure what to believe! Does this really matter?

2020-06-05 17:37:39 +0000 UTCOi Janne ! Happy to read you've had another productive week. After our earlier discussion I've made a few changes that slowly seem to be getting somewhere closer to making a claim of a productive week with audio. I would say that if you were to pick a topic that interests you it will surely be very interesting. Over the years you covered so much already, big thank you for sharing so much, its very helpful. Enjoy your week end.
