Somebody might have already suggested this but the film V for Vendetta is definitely worth a watch

2025-11-07 22:59:51 +0000 UTCYea it's a bit strange that Guy Fawkes is seen as symbol of rebellion considering he represented an even more repressive version of Christianity at the time. It just doesn't look as good as having the monarch as the "Hero" and I suppose to simplify it you have to pick a side. They were both shitty.

2025-11-05 12:42:12 +0000 UTCMy Irish grandmother always used to say that we should be burning effigies of Henry the 8th, rather than Guy...! (For anyone who doesn't know: Henry VIII was the king who effectively began the English Reformation, during which the Church Of England was formed because he was angry the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce.)

2025-11-05 04:19:39 +0000 UTCI used to live in Devon, whilst I was in the UK, just down the road from Ottery St. Mary. Their tar Barrel event was quite staggering. Hereβs a short video of the evening, starting in the late afternoon on November 5th. You will be astounded! https://youtu.be/ZtOYyPj1li0?si=5gpWof_nFS1vpUNQ

2025-11-05 01:45:40 +0000 UTCIt's actually mental that I'm Roman Catholic and we've celebrated bonfire night since I was born. Not saying that that's a bad thing, it's actually a good thing.

2025-11-04 23:42:59 +0000 UTCI'm also a republican (not to be confused for US politics) and an atheist. But I've enjoyed a few bonfire nights. i don't think you have to be a monarchist or a protestant to enjoy the event.

2025-11-04 23:21:44 +0000 UTCJust to add another piece of information that wasn't in the video Guy Fawkes was said to of jumped from the ladder as he was climbing to the gallows breaking his neck and dying instantly to escape being drawn and quartered.

2025-11-04 23:16:47 +0000 UTCIt isn't a national holiday, it's just a celebration. ..Most kids don't learn about the history, they just go to have fun. ..I haven't attended an event for well over a decade as I'm a republican atheist. π

2025-11-04 23:00:46 +0000 UTCIt's worth mentioning that today, Guy Fawkes / Bonfire Night, is largely a secular occasion. I'm a lifelong atheist, but I've had some enjoyable evenings, surrounded by people, around a huge bonfire, fireworks, and pork pie and mushy peas. That said, I haven't been to one in about 20 years

2025-11-04 23:00:31 +0000 UTCThe video, at least the part I'm up to made it seem like Catholics just wanted to practice their religion, freely. But the truth is, what was the norm in Europe at the time, was that boths side of Christianity were trying to force themselves on the other side, and on non-theists. Queen Mary was just as cruel, on protestants. And both sides would burn "heretics" at the stake, etc. It was an awful time to be alive. Especially if you didn't fall in line with which ever doctrine was in control, at the time
