Only Fools and Horses Christmas Special Christmas Crackers

Comments

Yes, its just a fancy ash tray that you could have next to your armchair. They faded out of fashion in the 80's

Barry Michel

Del said Rodney has had more dogs than Crufts. (Crufts is an annual dog competition, here in the U.K.) Dog owners enrol their pets. The pets are put through some tests like running through hoops or tunnels and over bridges. They have to sit and stay when told. The dogs are judged on their activity and how clean they are etc.....

Jules

Some households in the U.K. don't have their Christmas Dinner or even present opening, till after (what was) the Queens Speech. Now the Kings Speech. That is on the traditions list too. The speech starts at 3pm and lasts around 10 minutes.

Jules

That wasn't custard. It was Christmas Pudding. It is basically a steamed fruit cake. (Another item that will be on the British Christmas Traditions clip.) A pudding here is usually a dessert. But we also have Yorkshire Pudding which isn't a dessert and is served with potatoes gravy etc...

Jules

If you research British Christmas Traditions on Youtube, you can watch a clip on how we do the festive season. The crowns are made of a tissue paper suitable for art projects They come out of Christmas Crackers. (Not a cracker you eat with cheese.)

Jules

Slightly underdone, means they shouldn't be eating it for fear of food poisoning. If I go to a restaurant, I wont eat any bird meat. I will eat beef. I will buy cooked chicken or turkey from a store though.

Jules

I think the only series that didn’t have at least a month between Christmas specials was 3. They were always shown on Christmas Day Technically series 6 and 7 too because they started with the Christmas special (although usually considered separate from the series) with the first proper episode starting a week after each

Kieran B

This was shown a couple of months after the first series. I think it was probably a late commission, because the set changed, they each have new haircuts and most notably the theme tune changed to the more familiar version - all indicating it was not made in the same production block as the first 6.

Ronnie Cassinello

Del said “you’ve had more dogs than Crufts” - Crufts is like the Westminster Dog Show in the US

Kieran B

Christmas for us is much more like Thanksgiving and Christmas in the US combined, thankfully we usually get Boxing Day off the day after to recover too (unless you have a job where you work public holidays)

Kieran B

That was a Disney produced film and entirely untrue, lemmings do no such thing.

WonderWasp

These shows bring up things you’d never expect, eh?

Killermcknight

Oh gosh 😅

Killermcknight

Thank you! It was familiar but I couldn’t place it.

Killermcknight

For a sec I was like “what were we eating?” Lol

Killermcknight

I’ve got to see if I can find some for us to open in December sometime. Is it sacrilege to open them on any day other than Christmas or Christmas Eve, or is a random day in December okay?

Pudding is a centuries old term and historically is effectively anything sausage-like, and then slightly later anything cooked in a pudding cloth - so it can be sweet or savoury, which is why we still have savoury dishes like steak and kidney pudding, Yorkshire pudding or black / white pudding (which comes from the earliest use). Like you said Taylor pudding without any qualifier in much of the English speaking world is synonym for dessert. But Christmas pudding is slightly separate because that’s its name - and it’s because it was traditionally cooked in a pudding cloth. You’d put the custard on it, but brandy cream is very typical too - it’s doused in brandy usually as well and set alight. The US narrower definition is much more recent. There’s a special from the historic farms series, Tudor Feast at Christmas I think, that talks about puddings in passing. They might be great educational shows to check out (the premise being 2 archaeologists and a historian spend a year running a farm as it would be done in different time periods - each series is a separate period. The same team also did Secrets of the Castle where they joined a project in France to build a castle using only 14th century methods, and Full Steam Ahead about the history of the railways).

Kieran B

The crepe paper (or waxed tissue or something) hats from Christmas crackers are very much a thing, they don’t do anything in the show generally that’s not broadly realistic - it’s very relatable

Kieran B

I’m not sure if what Del is using is a spitoon or just an ashtray, my grandad used to have an ashtray on a carved wooden stand - I’d forgotten about that until now, haven’t thought about that for 20 years

Kieran B

Calling out your special secret server Andy 😂

Emily

Not to mention we set it on fire too 🔥

Nim

Series 2 onwards starts to get really good. Pretty much every episode and special is banger from now on

Nim

Sorry to confuse the debate further guys but Christmas Pudding *is* a specific pudding. It's a rich steamed pudding full of dried fruit, peel, spice, and (sometimes) nuts. It's served with brandy sauce traditionally but you can have it with custard, brandy butter, cream, ice cream, whatever you like really. It's so heavy and rich many British people aren't that keen on it. I actually quite like it though! Taylor is right that we use the word "pudding" as a catch all term for a sweet after main course. It's a synonym for "dessert" here in many parts. It's also used for more specific dishes, not forgetting Black Pudding (you guys call it Blood Sausage I think). Pudding is lots of things here basically!

Lemmings are subarctic rodents, theyll follow the leader of the group off a cliff, or so its been documented. Aka theyre known as suicidal and the lemmings game series are named after them

When del is taste testing the wine, bain-marie is a cooking process that involves a bath of hot water, like when you melt chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water.

Nick Jarrett

Anthracite is a dark grey-black rock

Nick Jarrett

Nick Jarrett

It's a hard watch at times as I REALLY hate the sound of eating 😅. Still, love all the rest of the episode.

On the audio dipping, I think that's on your end as Stevie has said the same during Bottom episodes.

Yeah the paper hats are very flimsy paper and they look shit, which is the goal - we don't think we look good wearing them. We have crackers, which you pull with others on the table, they have a little strip in them with a patch of silver fulminate so they snap or crack when pulled apart. In them you get a terrible joke and often a fact, a paper hat of random colours and a toy. They're meant to be crap, it's just a tradition. The toy can be anything from tiny screwdrivers to a little magic trick. You do get really posh ones from places like Harrods, but most homes will get a box from the supermarket.

Andy

Impeccable timing. Today is gonna suck for reasons I won't share, this video is just the tonic I need.
