LGR - 1999 Oberhofer Walnut Burl Monitor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTE7_gqnSLk

Ahh it's good to be back! Back from VCFMW and back into my house, heck yes.

And here we are with the first video from the new space! Or really, the old but newly rebuilt and refurbished space. Either way it's an exciting day. Is the video subject exciting? Possibly! It's certainly very LGR, ha.

Taking a look at the Mitsubishi Oberhofer Edition monitor, a 15-inch LCD from 1999 encased in a glossy walnut burl bezel intended to fit in with fancy '90s executive decor. Hollywood home offices in particular, it turns out. And selling for just $1,800! Considering their previous solid wood monitors were $5,000 this was basically a steal... if you lived in Beverly Hills, I guess.

And yep, that's what this is! A straightforward, classic LGR thing to get myself back into the groove of making videos at home again with a slightly different setup while I continue to get my old office workspace back together. I hope you enjoy this one despite its simplicity.

I'm stoked to get working on the next videos straight away, and $5+ supporters can expect the latest LGR Wrap Up episode this weekend if all goes well. Thanks so much for your ongoing support! Can't even say how good this post feels to write. Feels like home.

I ran across one at VCF East this year! https://youtu.be/RzOWmypCiyg?t=1444

I had a walnut veneer Dell laptop in around 2005 - people laughed at me then, well they're not laughing now!

James Fox

Yep, I think you need a license to film it or whatever. Which I purchased a licensed clip for this video :)

LGR

Definitely letting it come in a bit fuller!

LGR

What a thing, reminds me of the fake wood in cars from the 90s and 00s! So great that you can do a video from home again, it was awesome to catch a glimpse of the projector room setup at the end of the VCFMW video :-D Probably a dumb question - you showed some stock footage of the Holywood sign, I remember seeing a Tom Scott video about that being a TM or something??

Gareth P

Here in Germany we call that faux wooden plastic Gelsenkirchener Barock. 😅

BastetFurry

Hey, question for your next wrap-up: now that you're gloriously bald, are you gonna bring back the wizard beard you had for the Ars Technica video?

Leeroy Jenkins

That faux walnut finish is peak 1999 luxury! 😂 Honestly, it looks like something that should come with a cigar humidor and a desktop globe. The fact that this LCD still performs so well after 26 years is incredible - they really don’t make ‘em like this anymore. I half expected a Windows 98 startup sound to play when you turned it on! Beautifully aged tech, beautifully presented as always, Clint. 👏

Presumably at that price you weren't expected to put up with half a dozen duff pixels, which some manufacturers claimed were a normal part of the manufacturing process. After taking three LCD monitors back my boss gave up on buying one. "At £500 I expect it to be perfect". Around the same time I bought new the most best 17" CRT monitor I have ever seen (an IBM) for just £130.

Duncan

Oh man this is peak '90s Beverly Hills rich snob', it's like the computer peripheral version of a 90s Jaguar that sat in a garage its whole life.

Jon Bieber

This monitor looks slick!

Kyla Smith

That thing would be such a perfect pairing with this

LGR

Very cool! Quite similar to a computer case that a German customer of mine sent me a pic of a while back (pretty sure it's just plastic). I'll upload a pic to the chat. And congrats on being up and running back home!

Geekenspiel

Walnut, 15"... 90s??? Heck yeah, Clint! Hail to the executive, baby. Gonna grab a coffee right now and enjoy this one. And congratulations on moving back in, dude. Glad to hear things are returning to normal for you. Wishing you the all the best in this new chapter, and looking forward to seeing some of the new filming sets. Cheers to classic LGR! I'll sip to that.
