LGR - The SereneScreen Marine Aquarium Screensaver

https://youtu.be/PprsZgA-kxs

Trust me, you do remember at least one of the screensavers covered here.

This is an episode I've thought of doing for years, and my current situation kind of pushed me towards finally making it happen! To PC users of a certain ilk, the Marine Aquarium screensavers are perhaps most well known by the cut-down releases distributed with certain packs and versions of Windows XP. But there are many more releases and editions beyond those two, plus a whole history going back about 40 years to the Commodore 64 and Amiga days!

I hope y'all enjoy this one, it's certainly been a fun diversion for me. Plus it gave me an opportunity to test a new desktop microphone and set up my capture equipment again, so that's a nice improvement to what I can make here. I've already found five or six things that need to change or be clarified in the final edit, but do lemme know any thoughts.

Also, work on my house has finally begun! Almost 4 months after the hurricane, things are finally in motion to get the dang place repaired and back to a livable state. I am damned excited about it, but it will also no doubt eat into my time, so I'm unsure of the next video's arrival date.

Things are lookin' up though, and no small part of that is thanks to you! Your financial support here is seriously more important than it's ever been, as ad revenue is abysmal this time of year and the home repairs are... wildly costly, sheesh. Even with insurance, there's a lot I'm left paying out of pocket. So yes. Truly, I mean each word: THANK YOU.

Glad to see a tech tales-ish video again! Nice work

Sadly, it sounds like Mr. Sachs is done with development. The non-Windows versions will no doubt carry on, but some of the last posts from him on that forum are basically saying the code for the Windows version is gone, and he's off enjoying retirement. Well earned, just a pity it won't be carried on when it inevitably breaks on desktops one day.

Scott Seligman

I have to say you’re awesome no matter what

Tom Anderson

Deeply! One of the most fun projects in months

LGR

Clint how much did you enjoy doing this video

Tom Anderson

Thank you! It's finally feeling like real progress each day now

LGR

Happy to hear it, Dave!

LGR

Ahh I can imagine. A perfect pairing of interests.

LGR

I looked but unfortunately not that I saw! Only Android

LGR

I remember wishing for exactly that back in the day! I'd still love to see that sort of thing... like an open world (open sea?) saltwater creature life simulation sandbox game on a modern engine

LGR

Without water ever since making that video though, heh. It has become a plant terrarium.

LGR

Yep, that was b-roll from the Metalfish PC build And yeah the temperature has been legitimately dangerous here for the past week, with only light amounts of snow. Staying warm though!

LGR

Only 3 months since moving into the rental, but still! That's halfway into the 6 month estimate... may end up being there longer depending on how the house progresses, but I'm hopeful at the moment

My brother is all-in on Liverpool, so I end up supporting them by default! Not familiar with the Courage. Must admit I'm not terribly invested either way, I'm mainly there for the beer and the brotherly good times. Plus I love the energy of a good rowdy crowd 😄

LGR

Liverpool v Leicester on the 26th last month!

LGR

Great video! What premier league game did you watch 😃

Retrobaz

Loved this, really enjoy the retrospective style stuff, some great content crammed in! Was the footage of the aquarium PC basically b-roll taken from the previous vid? I really like the aquarium screensaver but the one thing that bugs me a bit (and this is true of many other screensavers) is that it doesn't really do the job of saving your screen if you're needing to avoid static content! I now have an OLED and so screensavers actually need to save my screen and not just look good :-) Great news on the house!! Was concerned you might be impacted by apparently rare cold weather in the south, seems that Asheville might have evaded actual snow though? Sorry if that's nonsense, just saw something on BBC news!

The nostalgia hit I got with this is immense. I remember seeing this screensaver on my dad’s work computer for the first time when I had the opportunity to go into the office with him on weekends. Seeing you run it recently on a modern computer at the end of the Metalfish Y2 Aquarium PC build made me ponder getting it. Suffice to say, I’ve just bought it now and installed it on both my work and home laptops.

John Cartman

The aquarium PC makes a very appropriate appearance! I can't believe you kept that goofy thing around.

Tyler Compton

Imagine Odell Down Under re-made on this engine :)

Sähkömonni

hah! i remember when my dad first got this on his laptop - he was raving about it .. I wonder if anyone made a version of this for Linux?

Evan B

My dad was an IT professional and maintained a saltwater tank at home. Needless to say, this screensaver was legendary in our house!

Chris

Idk why but videos like this are my favorite

dave collins

Glad to hear things are on the upswing Cliff. You’ve had one heck of a rough ride these last few months. Hang in there man, you‘ll be home soon. Each day brings you closer.

Gerry Picolla

When the hurricane hit you said you'll probably have this temporary place for about 6 months. And now you say that 4 months already passed? That's hard to grasp. Time sure flies...

Dukefazon

The true highlight of the XP Plus Pack. But the real question is who in the Prem do you support? And are you a NC Courage fan?

Kyle Mahaney

I might be young (17 to be exact) so it’s no nostalgia hitting me but is it awesome.

Nathan S. murru

Oh man, when you were doing that most recent Computer Chronicles CES rewatch, that Star Trek After Dark screensaver brought back so many memories. That said, I know you were asking for names for that segment - maybe LGR Retro Chronicles? I am glad that things are finally moving forward on the house, I know how much of a headache that is, having lived through too many hurricanes, as well as crazy hailstorms myself. Looking forward to the next video, whenever that may drop!

Joel Cooke

The wave of nostalgia just hit me, is intense. I used to have a copy of this when I was very young kid. I remember it vividly, the computer teacher from my elementary school gave it to me.
