LGR - CES 1993 via Computer Chronicles
Added 2025-01-13 21:30:52 +0000 UTCGot another CC episode here!
Lemme know your thoughts! After the Christmas Computer Chronicles episode of LGR, a whole buncha folks asked for more along those lines. So here's more! This time we're looking at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show of 1993. Since CES 2025 just happened this was on my mind as an obvious choice for the next "LGR Reacts" episode.
On that note, should I call this anything if it becomes a series? LGR Reacts seems gross and too generic. But like, it's also kind of what it is. I'm open to ideas.
Also this is currently copyright struck due to the show's theme song, so... if you can't watch it at all that's why!

And then suddenly, everyone dumped their CRTs for LCDs.

2025-01-16 23:29:32 +0000 UTCPlease keep this series going! I agree that "LGR Reacts" is a terrible name. I hate the recent trend of react videos that feature little to no effort/content from the person "reacting". What you're doing is actually informative. I agree with someone ahead of me that suggested "LGR Commentary".

2025-01-16 19:59:31 +0000 UTCLove these videos! Your passion really comes out with these! If it ever becomes a series I think "LGR Snapshots" would be a good name. Watching Computer Chronicles in 2025 feels like looking into a small snapshot of a completely different time (even if in the grand scheme of things, ~40 years isn't all that long)

2025-01-16 01:58:18 +0000 UTCIt is surprising how long it took LCDs to become mainstream. I couldn't say the year but I recall Sharp showing a 20" LCD TV at a AV show. It had its own display room with security guards like the DeBeers diamonds. I think yield was the problem. In the late 1990s my boss gave up on getting an LCD monitor after taking back three which all had loads of duff pixels. Away from computers it was great to see the Sharp Viewcam. We bought one in 1998 for a trip to New York. Even then we got lots of comments about how small and convenient it was.

2025-01-15 22:03:15 +0000 UTCI really like this format. It’s the same thing I do when watching or reading about retro stuff - I pause and look things up to refresh my memory and “fill in the blanks.”

2025-01-15 14:15:14 +0000 UTCClint, I'm definitely enjoying these Computer Chronicles re-watches, as they're definitely different from YouTuber's React videos as it's just a video of you going "wow!" "mind blown" or whatever mindless commentary is put out there. Your passion and knowledge is definitely on display as you watch these videos, and that's what makes it interesting for me. It'd be fun to see you do the same kind of segment for Apple Keynotes and other tech companies' big event. I remember watching Computer Chronicles on Saturdays after I had just finished doing my chores for the day - this bring back some good memories, so thank you for that. I also enjoy the rabbit holes of you chasing down the random products that pop up and pique you're interested. I'd like to see a segment on the 'hypeware' (the next *BIG THING* that they were hyping up at the shows, but never happened).

2025-01-14 20:37:25 +0000 UTCI’d love these to release as shorts before or after it’s final release. There’s a lot of content in this video.

2025-01-14 20:30:53 +0000 UTCDeinterlacing the archived MPEGs really transforms these episodes, yeah! I didn't know that the interlaced versions were a thing until some comments let me know about it after the Christmas episode.

2025-01-14 17:08:33 +0000 UTCLOVE Flashback! It was such an important game of my childhood! 20:45 - it seems the gun is attached into something that's in the 3.25" drive bay!

2025-01-14 16:52:31 +0000 UTCYes! Love these videos, it's also a great way to catch up on some of these episodes I haven't seen in ages. :) Keep it up! Some random names for this series that come to mind... LGR Time Capsule Watch with LGR LGR TV LGR Presents!

2025-01-14 15:16:07 +0000 UTCThese are fun. But honestly I feel the novelty might wear off at some point. These are great for bad situtations like you have now tho. Copyright things might also pose a headache with these. I'm certainly not against for an occasional video like this just maybe in moderation. As for what to call these, maybe LGR commentary? It's more accurate and sounds better than just react in my opinion.

2025-01-14 12:40:44 +0000 UTCAnother idea: you create a series that is dedicated to exploring content on Archive.org. It just so happens so far you've exclusively looked at the Computer Chronicles archives. In this series you could also talk about digital software preservation and your role in that.

2025-01-14 11:41:12 +0000 UTCI think the name "LGRewind" would be fun. But on the other hand I don't think that all videos that are similar should be required to be part of a named "series", since it implies there will be somewhat regular entries in the future.

2025-01-14 11:36:40 +0000 UTCLove these videos! Also wow, EA*KIDS booth, good times. I had Eagle Eye Mysteries (regular and London), Peter Pan, and Scooter's Magic Castle back in the day!

2025-01-14 05:11:39 +0000 UTChah! awesome! I love that you're doing more of these, Clint Wow, tons of pocket-devices at that show.. I remember those days.. I think that's right around when I got my 386

2025-01-14 02:42:10 +0000 UTCI was fortunate enough to experience the 80s and 90s in computers and appreciate it, you think you've see everything and then you see videos like this and what you missed or didn't realise even existed thanks for the great content

2025-01-14 02:18:52 +0000 UTCLove the new idea! Sitting here show-and-telling my 20yr old son how mind-blowing some of this stuff was back in the day.... and how many of them fizzled without exploding like the video phones and, ultimately, the mini-disc. As soon as I saw that green stripe on that IBM I was like "Adrian just did one of those!" Also, have my vote for LGR Rewind

2025-01-14 01:20:08 +0000 UTCAnother great video Clint! Always great to see these time-capsules of the past. It's amusing seeing CES when it was actually focused on CONSUMER electronics. I've worked at the show the last ~5 years, and over half of it I wouldn't classify as such: AI scams, startups that will be lucky to be around next year, Chinese companies with alphabet soup names all offering the same e-waste, and companies that don't offer products/services to end users. There is still neat stuff to be found, but each year gets harder to find it amongst the tat.

2025-01-13 23:51:21 +0000 UTCIf y'all haven't checked out the ETRE Conference episodes of Computer Chronicles, you must! They're all about the big tech minds coming together and predicting the future of tech. They are amazing!

2025-01-13 22:15:36 +0000 UTCI agree - watchalong is what I consider this. You're not really _reacting_ to it much - you're adding some context or additional anecdotes, which is more like "watching something with an informed friend"

2025-01-13 22:09:09 +0000 UTCThis kind of content is the ultimate evening chill vibe, and that's great because A) You're really freakin good at that, and B) I think it's safe to say we're ALL pretty nostalgic about this show, and reveling in that shared sentiment is enjoyable for so many of us. So needless to say I'm really glad you're doing more!

2025-01-13 21:39:23 +0000 UTCAll of the computer chronicles incidental music gets a content match, so might need to do some editing or let YouTube Studio suggest muting the copyrighted audio. I got a positive reaction covering a show before, but I agree that "xxx reacts" is such a cringy string that I don't want to be known for it. Maybe you can come up with a better title... (Also, thank you for deinterlacing the computer chronicles show correctly to 60p.)
