LGR - Unboxing a PlayStation 2 24 Years Later

EDIT: Added some footage about the console's launch day, a bit about the manual not matching the system, a bit about Swap Magic 3, and trimmed many small things here and there to make it all flow a little tighter.

Greetings! It's been over two months since the last real LGR video (the Voodoo 3 3500 TV episode) and I'm finally back with something fresh! And by fresh I mean old. Though it's still pretty fresh for being old.

Taking a look at the Sony PlayStation 2 almost two and a half decades later! As with previous episodes on the Xbox, Dreamcast, and GameCube, I'm now finishing out the 6th generation of home consoles with the biggest of them all: the PS2. It's a system I've had many examples of over the years, but never had the pleasure of getting one in the box. So let's unbox the thing, set it up for the first time, and enjoy a buncha classic games! A truly cathartic experience for me in these crazy post-storm days.

For a bit of behind-the-scenes here, this episode was very close to not happening at all. This boxed console and my entire PS2 collection was right below where the trees crashed through my house during the hurricane, in the room that became a wet moldy mess. By pure chance I had moved all this PS2 stuff closer to the door for easy access since I was planning on making this video soon... and if I hadn't, then all this stuff would've been where a ton of nasty storm water leaked in through the busted ceiling. It would have been ruined. Crazy how things randomly work out sometimes.

So yes, I do hope you enjoy this one! I gotta say it's been a surreal experience working on it, seeing as I'm in a completely new location that I never planned to be in, plus still being in the midst of an ongoing water crisis along with all the rest of the storm cleanup/remediation/repairs occurring each day. To be honest I'm not sure if this came together cohesively as it was recorded over the course of several weeks whenever I found a free moment. But hey, this is just one step towards getting back to some kind of videomaking normalcy, so in theory it gets better from here. We'll see!

As always, a huge thanks for your ongoing support. LGR as a channel would be in a rough place otherwise, you are genuinely keeping this ship afloat right now and I thank you!

Hi Clint, I think you should contact YouTuber TronicsFix! He could fix this for you and get a video out of it. Win-win, wouldn't you say?

Roel Eppink

I always really enjoy these videos. Unboxing and going through the game libraries is even more chill than usual.

LevyNeptune

That's awesome! I hope you can/have backed up the file somewhere :)

LGR

Timely! I’m in the midst of 100%’ing Gran Turismo 3. Finishing off the same save file since high school.

Ryan Kelly

Ah, the PS2. I still remember getting this in Christmas 2001. Along with a smattering of games, chief of which was GTA 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2. Needless to say, the Christmas break was GUD! And the PS2 was my not only my gateway to DVDs, but also the PS1. I never really played the PS1 during it's heyday as I was a N64 fan. So, getting to go back and play PS1 games was a treat. I did eventually get the Gamecube and Xbox down the line, but the PS2 was my console of choice for years. So many certified bangers for the system.

The Enforcer

ahhh, i hope no one goes and bids on the japanese hard drive I'm looking at. those early consoles are weird. and dang, ps2s are cheap in japan. open, but boxed for under $20!

adcurtin

The King has returned, the earth is healing 😁

ctrl.alt.rees

I did! A huge piece of enjoyment is always the context, and personal perspective and history you add. Goes far beyond the console. Now I’ll pray for the holy grail imo (PS1👀👀)

Saul

It seems like the stopgap solution is to buy a working controller off ebay and swapping the internals. A year or two back, I tried buying a USB based dual shock clone from ebay but it seems way too cheap and chintzy. Maybe this is an opportunity to put out an APB on the desire to modernize internals of the first 3 Dualshocks.

M.T.

I was quite excited about the launch of the PS2. Then a) I got a launch magazine about it and all the launch games seemed to be FPV shooters b) Nowhere had stock. I ended up buying a Dreamcast, a load of Dreamcast games AND a DVD player for about 2/3rd the price. Years later I got a boxed PS2 slim for £20 at a car boot sale and had fun with the Eye Toy games.

Duncan

good video

Jeremy M. Beaver

Proooobably my favourite console. You're absolutely right this console defined our generation. I am proud to own one.

Alyxx the Rat

I've never really been into consoles. But I do have a PS2 just for guitar hero. That was such a thing for me. Never bought any other games for it. But I do agree on the styling. I also almost bought the DVD remote. Kinda wish I did just for reasons.

J Ruonti

Great to see you back on the horse! I know it's still a long road, but this is the first step.

Chris Horry

I bought this console in like 2012 or something. And I ended upo mainly collecting platformer on this system. I barely have enough but platformer, still some of my favourite games are on this system like fur fighters.

Ezydenias

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Somehow I conned my parents into getting me a PS2 and GTA3 as my first game. Ah, memories. I think my most time heavy game was Gran Turismo 4, though. It is a brilliant game, even by modern standards.

Nate Greene

I think the most useful implementation I've ever seen of the pressure sensitivity of the Dualshock 2 buttons is actually with the Gran Turismo games, but not in regards to throttle and braking. When you're tweaking the car stats if you just lightly press the buttons they will tick slowly, but if you press down hard it will tick MUCH faster, thus you can make small or large changes with the same button, just based on how hard you hold it down! Also, I learned to play those games with dual-analog: Left stick for steering, right stick for acceleration and braking, while using the shoulder buttons for manual shifting. :B

Kris Asick

Yaay! Basically.

Gav Massingham

Id definitely love to see a video on it

Zachary Outen

Right? I gotta see what’s possible with modded servers nowadays

LGR

Yep, as mentioned in the previous video I’m in a rental until my house is fixed. Been itching to get back to this asap!

LGR

Happy to see you are putting some videos out. I thought it would be 6 months to a year before we get your old content. Is this at Parents or Brothers home? Or did you get your own temporary place? Prayers for Carolinas/Appalachia.

InSyder

Wow you’re right, 20 years exactly! And yeah it’s good to be back, it’s a useful distraction :)

LGR

still blows my mind you could play online with ps2, I didn't hook up a console to internet till my xbox one lol

Zachary Outen

"Let the legend come back to life." Also, I think I did have that PSM Article. The hype for MGS2 was real, and it's also MGS3's 20th anniversary today! Remember seeing the trailer from a viewfinder in a camcorder at an EB Games in North L.A.. Glad you're still making videos despite the chaos recently.

Frederick G.

Thank you, Seth!

LGR

Hi LGR! It is so great to see you able to get a video out through the chaos. Congrats to you on that milestone, and my prayers are with you to get your life back with a fair insurance settlement. Being from Louisiana and Florida I thought hurricanes were our thing and when standing in Asheville in my younger years never dreamed that such a thing could happen there, but so glad that you made and most of your collection made it and that you are still with us. Good luck and best wishes to you and everyone in your area :-)

Seth C

I'd love to know that as well, event the blue DS2 controller I showed here needs work and new internals would be great

LGR

For real though, argh! Nearly a quarter of a century feels like no time at all

LGR

I hope you enjoy it!

LGR

Doing my best one day at a time :)

LGR

Thanks! Slowly but surely, still handling the mold

LGR

Awesome, can't wait to watch!

OldSchoolStereo

Something of immediate note, you mentioned the translucent color controllers following a couple years later, but the DualShock 2 was almost identical to the original, so they had the colors pretty early on. On that note though, does anyone know vendors who sell quality reproductions of the internal parts? I still a DS and DS2 in translucent blue, but neither work anymore and I desperately want to hotrod them

M.T.

No come on, it hasn't been 24... oh god where did the time go

Endzs

LG-aRRR ship.

c

Nice, thank you Clint

Cherzo

Welcome back guy!😉👉

Brent K

Ps2 stuff Clint, they impress me too

Tom Anderson

Been praying for this exact video ngl (following up on the Original XBOX, Dreamcast, GameCube)

Saul

Welcome back dude

Deckard Games

Coming out of the downturn swinging ❤️ hope recovery is going well!

Earl Elmore

So happy to see you getting back in the swing of things! I hope the house repairs are going smoothly.

Dustin Brothers

Great to see some new content and that you're getting on with business
