LGR - Dune for MS-DOS

https://youtu.be/JvP3d3QB-4k

The reviews must flow! And the spicy subject matter this time around is DUNE! The first computer game adaptation, made by Cryo Interactive and Virgin Games in 1992. I've long used this as a sound card benchmark/demonstration, but it is so much more than that.

Yeah I've been extremely stoked for Dune Part Two hitting theaters this month (which I saw over the weekend and holy balls was it fantastic) so I figured it was an ideal time for a retrospective on the classic DOS PC game. Perhaps not as ideal as covering it a few years ago with the release of Part One, but back then I wasn't really sure if it'd be worth spending my time covering it since game reviews were performing relatively badly on YouTube. That's seemingly changed in recent months, so let's see how this goes over with the algorithm.

That's all for this one, I hope you enjoy! All Patrons on $5+ tiers can expect the February LGR Wrap Up video pretty soon, and I'll be back with another LGR Thing sometime next week if all goes well. Thank you for your ongoing support and stay well!

Comments

The Cryo games are interesting to me, whether it is Dune, KGB or Lost Eden.

Cleverly Blonde

Thanks, I always try to add a little flair to my subtitles!

LGR

I dig the Dune Laserdisc AC3 Dolby Digital release 😁 Also the subtitles are a treat, when small goodies like [Agent Cooper] appears when Kyle Macalaccalan πŸ˜‰ speaks .

Because Why-Nerd

Never got into the first but we played the second to death and back. THE BATTLE FOR DUNE BEGINS NOOOOOOOOOOOOW!

BastetFurry

Wow, at 10:29 they animated a wink TWICE in a row to make sure you know that you need to leave totally-not-a-molester guy to train them in arms. You can't even blame blinking on your screwup if you don't lol

Nachts

Not knowing much about Dune, it was a surprise to see Captain Picard; Patrick Stewart certainly got around back then, lmao. and I know about Cryo due to MegaRace, lol.

Robert Butler

That death animation at 7:00 Wow.

Billy Steiger

Interesting, a good summary of this game. I heard about it, but never played it. Not sure if I missed that much. But maybe I give it a try in the future. The soundtrack might be worth it. I love the Lost Eden OST by StΓ©phane Picq(although this game is more a kind of interactive movie). I only played Dune 2(the RTS grand-daddy) and the remake Dune 2000(the belated CnC clone with the still amazing OST by Frank Klepacki). ThatΒ΄s my only exposure to Dune content, aside that I watched the original movie or the mini series ages ago.

Udo Krawallo

I did play the Westwood one a lot and recently on dos box I finished it up :) I did not know that there was another one.

Vincent Deville-Duc

I haven't seen the new Dune movies yet (I know, I am probably missing out). But man it's wild that I've never played this and ONLY the Westwood games.

Alyxx the Rat

Always loved the character introductions and how they remind Paul of stuff he should know. "I am the Duke Leto Atreides, your father." "I'm your mother, Jessica." It's also fun if you go straight to the Harkonnen Palace. If you have any allies with you, they force you to turn around. But if you go solo, you get an amusing game over with Feyd-Rautha where he says: "You know what? Paul Atreides simply arrived one day at one of our fortresses. Needless to say, he was immediately shot!"

Will Herrmann

"It's no popcorn bucket, but it will do." Just watch out for paper cuts.

Vaggumon

Who is NOT watching your game reviews?! 😫 That is such huge part of Lazy GAME REVIEWS!

awesomepossum

Super jealous of your boxed copies of Dune and Dune 2.

Patrick Moore

Having covered Westwood’s Dune II you’re at least familiar with the basics in terms of factions and terminology and whatnot! By the way lemme know if you happen to need the CD-ROM release, I have an extra copy.

LGR

Nice! Highly enjoyable review! Never finished that game, but Dune 2 was my cup of tea. Played it 'till I croaked late weekends back then. The music was just magical! And you can hear that in my Planet X3 OST where I paid homage to Frank Klepacki and the others. Feel free to use the vinyl if you ever wanna do a piece on Dune 2. ^_^

Anders Enger Jensen

I too, cannot see Kyle MacLachlan without seeing Agent Cooper.

Arizona Palms

Interesting as always... thanks, Clint! And for a metal twist on Dune's soundtrack, Master Boot Record has a killer cover

Hugo Prevost

I really need to get around to this game on ADG someday, but part of the reason why I haven't is because it's a tall order, knowing just how deep it goes, plus I STILL haven't had a chance to actually watch any of the Dune movies yet; not even the original. >_<

Kris Asick

Cryo's Dune is very often slept on, and I've been guilty of unfairly overlooking it in the past. Hoping that this video changes that somewhat, I really came to like this adaptation!

LGR

It's a whole stack of random stuff from thrift stores! The amp and equalizer are mostly just there for show, the actual CD player portion is a standard Apple external USB CD-ROM drive connected to an old MacBook with its audio output hooked up to the stack.

LGR

What's the cd-player you're using? It looks fancy!

Bert Claes

This is the game that confused me so much back in the days. Everyone was playing Dune 2, but no one had any clue where the first one was hiding. I ended up playing it recently and... it's interesting. I haven't seen Part 2, but I'm super psyched already. It's awesome that someone from my little corner of the world is directing such a string of masterpieces.

Frederic St-Georges

Heck yeah, you're setting off onto one bonkers journey. It's such a wild and enjoyable universe to sink your teeth into, and for me it only gets better as I age.

LGR

Welp... I guess it's finally time to bump this up on the list. I missed out on all things Dune, shrugging off the cult following as a kid by assuming I'd dislike it. I have repeatedly seen the game used to test the sorts of sound cards I really dig these days and finally have the hardware to try it with. My wife was completly shocked and appalled that I'd never seen the original movie and wants to rectify that in the wake of Dune II coming out. Watch Order plan: OG Dune --> Dune Remaster --> Dune II Thanks for the kick in the pants LGR, I'm on it.

Michael A Berry

For real, those prices are even more absurd now than when I bought mine several years ago

LGR

Yeah I was happy to see that recently! There's a section in the video going over that, too :)

LGR

This is super timely, as Stephane Picq has just released the soundtrack remaster for Spice Opera (the CD album sometimes bundled with the game) that includes as bonus tracks the AdLib Gold and MT-32 soundtracks fused together for our hearing pleasure. https://stphanepicq.bandcamp.com/album/dune-spice-opera-2024-remaster

Beegotron

Played a ton of this back in the day and loved it. It's on my Deep Backlog to stream once I get those running again. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of my big box of the CD-ROM edition so many years ago because they're insane on eBay now.
