Greetings, all! Got another project here that I've had set aside for years, and finally put it together this past week after retrieving all of the components from deep storage.
It's a rebuild of the Altair 8800 Clone PC, with unused components from the Pyramid PC, and a unique Korean computer case from 2008. THE R2 TOAST. So-named for its patented 5.25" drive bay solution, which has the optical drive mounted vertically along the front of the case so that discs are inserted like toast in a toaster.
I think it's kind of awesome, hehe. Perhaps not very practical and bit annoying actually, but super fun nonetheless! Still want to find that absurd GMC Bulldozer case though...
There is an audio desync issue happening at 21:04, it'll be fixed in the final upload. Lemme know if you see other errors!
Very cool case, really. Just a bit of tilt on the optical drive would have solved all the falling out, even just a degree or two.
Side note, when playing toast, was anybody disturbed by the fact that a piece of bread broke a jar? I want to play that game!

Interesting - never seen a case like that before. Was really hoping for a see through drive from the thumbnail - alas.
I reckon you could use the βblanking plateβ with a bit of a spongy riser or two - maybe like what is used to fix 8-tracks, though might have to file it down a bit so it smoothly transitions in and out of the case.
Also, would love to see you use the graphics card in here thatβs mentioned in the manual - just feels rightβ¦
Finally, nice to see After Dark π

I am weirdly in love with that case.. Not enough to pay 80 dollars (cost+shipping) on ebay, but holy hell thats a weird and quirky thing and that stuff just sends me a flutter. I hope you can find that bulldozer case!

I love the unmentioned inclusion of an Ellipse reproduction beamspring as part of the test setup π

Potentially lethal case, but I do like the idea.

What a deliciously retro computer case. That thing screams 2009 or so. Kinda wish I'd have known about that one back then! [Adds saved eBay search for bulldozer case]

It'd be so much nicer with a slot loading drive. I still miss my 1st SCSI DVD reader from Pioneer which was of that type.

Unfortunately mixing and matching PSU cables, even amongst the same brand, can burn things out. There is no standard pinout on the PSU side.

Playing Crysis on a toaster. It can be done.

Drives like the TAM has make a ton more sense. You snap the disc straight onto the CD-ROM drive spindle, which prevents my whole problem with discs falling out of a vertical tray!

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh owners might disagree about your trashing of the vertical CD trayβs benefits :) but hey people will tell themselves anything to justify an expensive purchase
