101 Love Letters: An LGR Valentine's Day Thing?
Added 2020-02-10 15:26:58 +0000 UTC
Oh, hello there. What's a patron like you doing in a place like this? You come here often? Here, have a love letter I've written to you even though we don't know each other *WINK WINK*
Sooooo yeah, this is a thing. 101 Love Letters, a Windows PC application from 1995 by Great Bear Technology. Because uh, other things weren't ready yet and it'll be Valentine's Day when this goes live.
And yes, it really is just a piece of software dedicated to writing love letters. Or to be more specific, it's a badly-made piece of software dedicated to providing pre-written love letters that you fill out like a Mad Libs page.
I've had this thing lounging on the shelf for the better part of a decade so it's been on the back burner for long enough. Enjoy the general protection faults and dividing by zero! Doesn't get much more romantic than that.
Clint, here's an extremely relevant article from ComputerLife in 1997: https://imgur.com/a/cimDxzZ

On the subject of "let's talk about STDs" letters, I get the "For both our sakes I feel we should go and be tested" and "We each live with a past and mine..." letters. But what on EARTH is the "Things were never to go this far" letter???
Also I question the need for software to write a flowery letter when you're angry.
EDIT: Eugh, showed a clip of that letter. "You are an egocentric [fill in a noun]" indeed.

Thank you for putting so many jokes in the letters. Had to pause to read each one. Even my girlfriend, who wouldn’t normally enjoy LGR found them funny.

Why in the world was the first category all about...AIDS?? Is that love letter material?
Maybe that's where I've been going wrong all these years.

The amount of sex puns is almost exceeding The Sims 3 master suite stuff (btw one of my fave video to go back to). Anywho great video as always!

I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve,

Any chance you can upload the software to Archive.org? I'm curious to see if it works without crashing on my HP Vectra running Win 3.1.

I don't think I've laughed this hard at one of your videos since Ninja Nanny. And wow, I assumed you had written those AIDS letters as a background gag. What a program.

Sounds like the software was its own love letter to a version of windows it'd never meet normally.

I really miss system requirements being a thing. I was always anxious and a little excited to read system reqs on boxes. Especially when I still had a 386 and games were needing a 486DX2 or DX4 or *gasp* a Pentium. I'd then flick through magazines at the prebuilt systems and components and dream about what it would be like to have such a powerful system.

Did I read that wrong or are there several form letters for "Sorry I gave you an STD"?

I always take the opportunity to densely pack these kinds of videos with silliness. Anything that lets you input your own text is a content gold mine.
LGR
2020-02-10 22:25:20 +0000 UTC
Haha. I am already anticipating an inordinate amount of "love letters" sent to me as a result of this video, largely consisting of quotes from letters shown.
LGR
2020-02-10 22:24:23 +0000 UTC
Yeeeaaah the entire concept of canned form letters for the purposes of romance is a tad inauthentic. Or at the very least uninspired.
LGR
2020-02-10 22:23:26 +0000 UTC
Indeed, it's hard to find any information about it whatsoever! Just some basic info on EliSoftware and a couple listings in the back of an old magazine or two.

Wouldn't a printed out love letter feel a whole lot less romantic anyway? Let alone not even writing it yourself.

Now I'm curious to know if ANY of these discs ever worked on Win 3.1 machines..but hey you got it installed on Win98, so yeah who knows maybe the program got recalled and you got one of the leftovers...could just have been a corrupted floppy but dang..probably there isn't any archives of it anywhere online...too obscure.. cool that you got a letter ro print out though..

I feel like wrapping yourself a weighted blanket while eating from a heart shaped box of chocolates and watching Cheesey movies would have been a more healthy way to deal with crippling loneliness than sending out form letter spam. Did the software break because the inputs didn't come from an excel contacts list? 😉 I guess if tinder is too personal for you than you can use something like Mail Merge. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_merge Here's a free Google docs how to do it if anyone actually wants to learn how to personalize modern spam. 🤣😜https://developers.google.com/docs/api/samples/mail-merge
