Well, there goes one of the big ones again - shed one tear. But after the last Sim City, maybe it's for the better. Ever since Will departed, it wasn't the same anymore and without him, only an empty hull was left. So I'll not mourn the loss of one of my favorite oldschool studios, because it was already dead. Farewell, Maxis.

Guess Bioware will be next on the chopping block. Their founders left not to long ago.

Well can't say I am surprised. As you said Will Wright was gone. And they killed the SimCity Frenchise anyway. At least for the Oldschoolers. And well Sims had a new Haven since Sims 3!.

Maxis as we know it today is nothing like the old Maxis and in my eyes, they died a while ago to be honest... to me this felt totally expected...

That sucks! My condolences to the people behind the Maxis company, without them there wouldn't be any Sim City or The Sims games! RIP Maxis!

First Bullfrog and now Maxis... EA now has a reputation for absorbing and slaughtering decent game companies with unique ideas... I know average people were already in the habit of hating on EA but now they've given every independent game developer a good reason to fear doing business with them in the future, the irony being they used to be one of the best companies to go with way back when... :/

And the slow but steady cannibalization of old, cherished developers by churning homogenized corporations continues. It's a good thing the indie scene is creating the Maxis studios of today, at least. Dreams never die!

Well, that's a bummer. To us at least retrogaming will never die, and Maxis contributed enough in that niche over the years to make their legacy sort of immortal. We will game on.

Kinda reminds me of when I found out that Sierra was bought by Ubisoft - yeah, it was kind of sad, but I'd already shed my tears when Mr. Williams sold the company and the old office was closed.

Even if they'd gone long past their peak… there's still so many memories of the older games, that I can't help but shed a tear.
No more splines to reticular, and it just doesn't feel the same.
Even worse was the handling - it's kind of shit to do this to the team in the middle of something like GDC. I hope everyone there lands on their feet without too much drama :(

Also, EA sucks.
Yeah, Maxis hasn't quite been Maxis since Wright left, but it's still the official end to an era. One has to wonder what will become of the franchises under their banner from here - Will the failure of Sim City and the closure of Maxis mean that EA won't see fit to release any more titles in the series? Or does it mean a fresh start with new developers working on a new take on the classic games? On one side of the coin, depressing, on the other, exciting. Here's hoping EA management realizes why these games have stumbled and not that they simply aren't wanted. Here's also to hoping that the Maxis staff find new outlets for their talents, sooner rather than later.
