LGR - Slave Zero - PC Game Review

Another early viewing, this time a full week ahead of the scheduled date :) Decided to review this since a number of people seemed to be intrigued when I showed it at the end of the Sexy Mouse video!

LGR - Slave Zero - PC Game Review

Comments

We used to play shogo up until 2008/2009. There were still servers up by they were mostly Japanese people playing.

Justin Dotson

Totally need to cover Shogo in the future, it seems a lot more remember it than I thought

LGR

I used to play Shogo all the time with some friends online. Good times.

Justin Dotson

Same, it had a great sense of scale in the PC version

LGR

Glad you think so! It's a lot of fun even now

LGR

One of my favourite games from back then :) I really just loved how alive and small the world felt.

Dadou

Wow! Never heard of this game till now but man it looks freakin awesome!!!!

Great! :D

Heartwork79

Awesome, I hope you enjoy as much as I have if you take the plunge

LGR

Nice! I saw this on GoG the other day and wasn't sure whether or not it'd be worth the plunge, and I think it's safe to say after this that I'm gonna have to find that money to spend.

Jackie Stewart

Me too, hehe. Stay tuned.

LGR

I'd love to see a video on the Catz and Dogz series!

Dylan Tucker

Woo, thanks for the support! And certainly, hope you continue to enjoy :)

LGR

My first Patreon video! Keep the great work, I love learning about old PC stuff, because I was a console kid.

Another game I played a ton back then on PC! Sure it will show up in the future.

LGR

The aesthetics remind me of G-Police.

d

I plan on at least the first game or two in the series for PC, yup

LGR

Again, great video! And while we are talking about mechs - will there be a review of any Battletech game someday? Mechwarrior, Mech Commander, Crescent Hawks Revenge.....I don't care, any review of one of the Battletech games would be awesome!

Heartwork79

Yeah it's really a disappointing port all-around, could've been a lot more with that hardware. Glad you enjoyed!

LGR

For $5.99 on GoG I am certainly tempted to find out.

Nostalgia Nerd

Yeah it really is a PC game through and through. Disappointing since the DC was capable of much better graphics and gameplay.

Alyxx the Rat

Yeah, I'm weak for that era of game music since it feels nostalgic for me. And yeah, the difficulty spikes can get on me a bit but I just love how straightforward the game is.

Alyxx the Rat

I had the Dreamcast version and it is more on par with an N64 game as far as graphics go.Anyways thats awesome that you reviewed this one because I was just watching the sexy mouse video thinking how cool it would be if you reviewed slave zero. Thanks for all the great content.

Steven Friar

You are correct! I've never played any form of MTG but I'd like to give it a look sometime

LGR

They really do, as does the gameplay for what it is!

LGR

Wooooah! What is that Magic the Gathering game in the background? Could you review that? I lived and breathed MTG in the '90s and am super curious waht a game based on it would be, back then.

Allistair

I didn't actually realise that game was 15 years old on the sexymouse video! I thought it was fairly recent. Those graphics certainly hold up well.

Nostalgia Nerd

Another comparison between the Dreamcast and PC versions. http://i.imgur.com/MYwlMnB.jpg Really is night and day, combined with the other problems I'm not surprised so many hated the console port

LGR

Darkireland

aye think ill grab it on gog wish we had the stores in ireland you guys have for retro games and second hand stuff can never find deals in the specialist retro game stores due to them knowing what they have generals and our "thrift shops" nearly always just sell womens clothes which im only into on weekends

Darkireland

Totally worth it :)

LGR

Hehe, nice, sounds like we've had some similar experiences here too. Got the demo from a PC gaming magazine disc, played it tons, got it on GOG and played through it completely. MAN, it gets tough. Music definitely has a bit of an Unreal vibe, mixed with some of the soundtrack of games like Re-Volt. Not as good as either game but still fitting!

LGR

Certainly am! Hoping to track down a boxed copy for that though, only have the disc alone.

LGR

Might pick this up looks good fun

Darkireland

To be honest the complicated Mech games always intimidate me too much to even attempt playing them. I prefer simple point'n'shoot games.

Alyxx the Rat

This is one of my favourite shooters at the moment and criminally underrated in my humble opinion. Played the demo back in my childhood and got hooked. Got it recently from gog.com and I've been playing it steadily since. I'm sad it didn't become a franchise since the engine for its time was pretty good and the music feels very Unreal'y.

Alyxx the Rat

Nice review once again, LGR! Thinking of reviewing Shogo sometime in the future?

Matt Murphy

Oh yes, I certainly welcome some straightforward action from time to time and this one remains a lot of fun to go back to!

LGR

Nice to see a simple mecha game for once. So many are just ridiculously overcomplicated. :P

Patreon comments don't understand paragraphs at all... Here is pastebin because reading all that in one text bubble is terrible. http://pastebin.com/b0msdeWk (not that it is interesting to read anyway. but options)

Yeah, there are way too few of them. Aside from PC classic like Mechwarrior/MechCommander, Heavy Gear, Earthsiege and few others - nothing much to play. Relatively new mech games are mostly either Japanese indies like 2D sidescrolling Gunhound, Gigantic Army recently released on steam. And there are weird installments like Front Mission or Strike Suit Zero. There was quite huge downtime for western mech games, but they seem lately starting to pick up a little because of Hawken, Titanfall, MW online, etc. Indie title like Brigador looking quite interesting as well. Too bad most of them are multiplayer titles, I really more interested in singleplayer mech game. But Japan is still rules in mecha segment, Armored Core series is a one thing, but amount of games based on popular mecha shows is mind blowing. Super Robot Wars, Another Century Episode, various Gundam games, and there is way more mecha games which never was as popular to get known widely in the west. Too bad console version of those games never will leave japan cause they are niche. Really excited for X on Wii U by Monolith, especially after recently started to play Xenoblade Chronicles. ... I need to stop talking when talk goes about mechs. So yeah.... TL;DR - we need more mech games. Always.

ksen

For sure. I miss the frequency these kinds of games used to pop up.

LGR

Giant mechs, aw yeaaah~. That's the stuff.
