The X Files Reaction 1x13

Hello All!

Creepy one this week. I think the actor smashed his performance! Made me question what was real and what wasn't, not surprised that Scully waivered here. Felt for her losing her Dad and dealing with the grief, whilst having to work and when the case links to her own life - well, that must have made things even harder to deal with! Great episode.

Much love

Dakara x

"Did the writers hear me?" Lol this is getting out of hand now. Forget Boggs. You seem to be the one with some sorta psychic inclination. Speaking of Boggs and what Scully being there when he got gassed would have meant, for me personally as a viewer, I don't think it would've confirmed that he was speaking in absolute truths, or Boggs being the real deal. Because that's what charlatans do. Extracting background information and details which seem extremely exclusive and personal, sometimes doesn't take much work. Psychics and mediums who prey on the vulnerabilities of people who are grieving can be the worst bunch. If we were to look at him through those lenses, Scully being there could have validated him in a perverted sense. The ultimate one up on Mulder, or him even being comforted in a way, by the knowledge of her being so emotionally tethered to him. Having said that though, like you, if I were in Scully's shoes, I would probably find it hard to ignore satiating my own curiosities. I asked you this once, but I think it's time I get one myself too. Pong, do you believe? Open ended for us and Scully, pretty close ended for both of the baddies I would say. Lol. You're killing these reactions. Loved the outro discussion too. Again.

Omg thank you for the correction! It really threw me off. The godson makes a lot more sense. Seems there is an old school way of parenting show cased here, ive experienced it myself but as a parent now, I couldn't imagine not telling my son how proud I am of him and keeping that emotional connection. Its so important imo.

Very good reaction. Yes, that episode had sad moments too.

In case you're curious, Starbuck was the first mate aboard the Pequod, and quite possibly Ahabs only friend. Very Scully-centric episode. We get a glimpse into her private life, and what we see is telling. The "He's my father.", line says everything there is to know in that relationship. Of course he was proud of her and her accomplishments, any father would be, and she knew it. She would have liked him to say it though. Also, we see that she might want to believe, but won't let herself.

This is the second time I've heard you mention Scully having a sister because of the party she went to. I take it you mean the children's party she went to in 01x05 'The Jersey Devil.' That was not her sister. She told Mulder that she was going to her "godsons birthday party." The Mom, Ellen, was simply a close friend. A very Scully-centric episode that touches on her relationship with her father revealing a hidden need for approval and his influence over her as an authoritarian figure. Hence her momentary reversion to his little girl with that awkward "Good night, Daddy." He was obviously the kind of man who kept his feelings in check. A high ranking Navy Officer who valued discipline and decorum. As far as her mother's reply that "He was your Father..." I think the mutually understood implication was, "Of course he was proud of you. He just didn't know how to say it." Still, that doesn't quell the longing for the memory of actually having heard those words.

So sad

I think people of my generation and older (late 50s) recognize the awkward with parents, especially dads. Men of previous generations didn't open up a lot to their kids. Doesn't mean they were mean. I suppose they were more detached than younger dads now. You're correct that "Yes" would've been the better response from her mother at the funeral, but some parents of a previous generation were more closed off and, I don't know, believe that there are things children don't need to know? My father was pretty closed off and my grandparents on my mother's side were even moreso. My mother told me that she wouldn't even ask questions of her elders because they all believed in the "Children should be seen and not heard" philosophy. Anyway, I just feel that Scully's dad just seemed like a reserved military man that probably wasn't very forthcoming with his daughter and maybe, also, his wife. But, I didn't get any "bad" vibes. Just maybe awkwardness. I did feel that she loved him and he loved her.

Brad Douriff is amazing in this episode. He is most famous for being the voice of the killer doll Chucky and for playing Billy in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
