2025-06-13 23:04:45 +0000 UTCCollege, for me, was a long time ago. I used a typewriter for papers, and went to the library for research. It sounds to me like your professor gave crappy questions. If you can just look up the answer, what’s the point? It’s busy work. But easier to grade, I guess. It should be “take a position and support it with evidence”. Better still, less homework, more essay exams where you take a position & support it with what you’ve learned and remembered. Because 1. It’s a useful (though regrettably rare) skill for the real world, and 2. To use information, you have to understand it, and you’re more likely to remember it in a meaningful way, as opposed to mindlessly memorizing, spitting it out & forgetting it.

Higher education is now run like a business and the focus has evolved to 'how to achieve the lowest possible cost to the university per student added'? That means minimizing manually graded assignments (reserved for group projects) and defaulting to multiple choice questions that can be auto-scored.

It shouldn't matter what or how you did it. Because ultimately the work isn't for the teacher, it's for you. Now I don't want a doctor who didn't learn so we do need a way to judge knowledge. To me the grade should be on the tests. Tests should be done in person and sans any knowledge outside of your brain. Books, cell phones, computers...

I hate being that guy but man kids have it so easy and it so disconcerting. Long rant but keep up the great content man!

(There was marriage, university dropping my major, and a husband in the Corps involved) The amount of bullshit involved for an overpriced piece of paper is ridiculous. And the entitlement of some professors. I had to drop an online SPEECH class because the first assignment I misspelled one word in a WRITTEN paper and she failed me for it. 🙄 But I sure did take myself to Disney World for finally friggin finishing.

It sucked and no matter how much I tried to prove I didn't do it. They wouldn't change their mind so I ended up barely passing the class because of it.

I'd find a paper online and change the order and words around. Maybe you can't do that today and maybe I caused some of the difficulties of today too....oops. However, you're correct, things need to change because the system has been broken for a LONG time.

Students are supposed to give correct answers. You detect cheating when people have the same *wrong* answers. (Among other ways to detect cheating.)

I'm pretty sure one of the physics TAs was regularly posting the homework answers on it, too, which is the only reason I scraped by with a passing grade.

Can learn a lot faster from it than books, obviously need to fact check important stuff. Homework to make videos or to present in person to prove you learned something is the way it’s gotta go.
