Help a writer out
Added 2023-09-26 20:57:36 +0000 UTCNo charge for this post as it is not a chapter. I need a little help from my Patrons on a research point. I'm really good at finding the information I need, but for some reason I just cannot seem to ferret out this one number. I need to know how many commercial airliners were forced to land at alternate destinations when US airspace was shut down on 9/11. If you don't mind providing a link to where you find the information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just thinking about the logistics of it.. I would have to say it would be next to impossible to differentiate between commercial, cargo, Charter, and private domestic flights.. Only the companies involved would be able to tell what flights they had that day were diverted to which Airfield.

2023-10-07 18:12:50 +0000 UTCI found that as well. It seems to like no one knows exactly how many passenger carrying aircraft were actually diverted that day. Strange, because it seems like that would be an easily known number.

2023-09-30 11:03:00 +0000 UTCI do know from experience that ALL aircraft were routed to the nearest Airport that could accommodate them. All trucks hauling sensitive DOD shipments were routed to the closest "Safe Haven" facility too.

2023-09-29 23:18:16 +0000 UTCI don't know how many of these were commercial.. But I did find the FAA report on shutting down the Sky.. https://text-message.blogs.archives.gov/2021/09/10/shutting-down-the-sky-the-federal-aviation-administration-on-9-11/

2023-09-29 23:12:17 +0000 UTCI'm not worried about international flights. Just writing about how many diverted American passenger flights needed to be put back in the air to continue to their destinations when airspace was re-opened.

2023-09-26 23:42:49 +0000 UTCOK. specifically for domestic flights with a flight date of 9/11/2001 (17504 flights apparently) Diverted flights = 584 Cancelled flights = 14962 this is data reported from the following airlines: AA American Airlines AS Alaska Airlines CO Continental Airlines DL Delta Airlines HP America West Airlines KH Aloha Air Cargo MQ Envoy Air NW Northwest Airlines TW Trans World Airways UA United Air lines US US Airways WN Southwest Airlines Database originally from here: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/ but the site kept breaking so I downloaded the whole database from here (7 gb compressed/85 gb uncompressed): https://developer.ibm.com/exchanges/data/all/airline/ but its probably easier if i just email it to you or something... can you post files in comment? just the 9/11 data is like 4 mb now looking for interntational flights

2023-09-26 23:26:54 +0000 UTCrmation. In a bold move at 1106 hrs, however, the ATC System Command Center sent out Advisory 036 requiring all aircraft to land and prohibiting aircraft from taking off from all airports and airdromes. This advisory read as follows: With this advisory, the shutdown of the Air Traffic System en masse had officially begun. Within four minutes, air traffic controllers nationwide had directed more than 700 aircraft to safe landings. Another 2,800 aircraft were safely landed within the hour. By 1216 hrs, just three-and-a-half hours after the first crash, the United States airspace was free of all air civilian traffic. Only emergency-related military, law enforcement, medical evacuation, and rescue operations were permitted to fly.
