December 2024 Channel Update – Last One of the Year

Happy holidays!!! ❄️ ❄️ It’s the last update of the year! I hope you’re enjoying a relaxing time with your friends and family, vacationing away from work and duties and all that. I’m still in at work since I spent my vacation days in November (for all those game releases lol). Usually my strategy is hoping that December will be chill since everyone else will be on vacation, but uhhh that hasn’t panned out super well this year 🤣 it’s alright though, I’m hanging in there!
TL;DR
Finished: Mouthwashing
Ongoing: Baldur’s Gate 3, Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Next Up: indies/first looks while keeping up with BG3/DAV
Some thoughts on the channel this year
Finished Stuff
Mouthwashing: Very interesting (and horrifying) indie narrative adventure about a spaceship crew stranded after a crash. I really enjoyed the aesthetics and the storytelling. Definitely on the lookout for whatever these devs cook up next!
We also checked out as a first look:
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: A first-person stealth-focused Indy game by Machine Games. I’m not familiar with Indy at all but so far it was very fun to sneak around and whack enemies on the head lol. This reminded me of how much I missed Machine Games since Wolfenstein 2! The only reason this is a first look is pretty much because I don’t have capacity right now – I’ll get back to this later on!
Current Stuff
Baldur’s Gate 3: We’re in Act 3, the home stretch, except it’s still quite a bit aways from the end…!? This areas in this act already seem noticeably denser compared to the previous acts. I get the impression it’s going to be the longest one yet.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard: I’m about 20ish hours in (Act 1) and my impressions haven’t changed vastly since last update. It’s been easier to enjoy once I adjusted my expectations & became more familiar with all the things Veilguard’s been doing differently from the previous DAs, but overall it’s a mixed bag.
Upcoming Stuff
As mentioned last time, I’m not thinking about too hard about other stuff with BG3 and DAV on my plate. I know having two long series can be kinda samey so I’m trying to complement it with indie stuff and/or first looks here and there. I’d like to check out Thank Goodness You’re Here in a few days! It’s a comedy “slapformer” that I’ve heard is very funny, which sounds like a great way to cap off the year to me 🌈
Year in Review
Looking back at the channel this year, I think we covered some good ground. Some of my personal favs:
Metal Gear Solid (1 is my fav!)
1000xRESIST (glad to see word of mouth really working for it lately)
Silent Hill 2 Remake (enjoyed the story unabashedly, even it being a spooky horror game didn’t take away from that)
Personally I would’ve liked to check out a few more indies. We did a few really lengthy AAA series that sucked up a lot of time, and I’m going to be real, I don’t think all of that was quality time well spent lol. (The silver lining is that these have really gotten me to think about how to better handle the balance between completionist tendencies vs what is truly engaging, both for me as the player and you as the viewer. But that’s another topic for another time!) I’d like to change that in the coming year after wrapping up BG3 and DAV, and hopefully it won’t be difficult with stuff like:
Deltarune Chapter 3 & 4 (boy I’m gonna have to refresh myself on the first 2 chapters)
OFF (a landmark RPGMaker title - I remember this being recommended to me quite a bit before)
The Talos Principle: Reawakened (can’t believe they’re doing a remaster just for me, now I have no excuse to not check it out)
… wow! I’m getting excited just looking at this list. And of course I haven’t forgotten about stuff I passed by like RDR1 too, but let’s finish up those big AAAs first 🤣

Oops, I apparently missed this update previously! But having now done so, it made for an interesting roundup! And I will say: I'm glad that you seem to have been enjoying at least some of the games that you've been playing! ^_^ As for what I, personally, have been most enjoying watching... you know, you're thus far the only YouTuber who has ever kept me engaged with RPG playthroughs. (Don't mistake me: I love <i>playing</i> RPGs. I just almost never seem to like <i>watching</i> them.) And in particular, I've been honestly a little bit addicted to your <i>Baldur's Gate 3</i> playthrough! Between former-flirt-now-sorely-tested-reformed-monk game-Welonz, and the unrepentant loot-goblinry, and the slightly-chaotic (in a good way!) approach to exploration and quests, it's been a ton of fun! ^_^ That said, <i>1000xResist</i> stands out as a delightfully strange, intriguing, and very much heartfelt work--and one that was greatly enhanced by the context that you were able to give to so much that was happening. As to upcoming stuff--oh wow, I'd <i>love</i> to see you play OFF! Not only has it been a long time since I saw a let's play of that game, but I suspect that you specifically would be a good match for it! ^_^ And finally, while I'm sad to read that you haven't managed to get time off for the holidays, and that work has apparently been busy, I hope that you've at least managed to sneak in some joy this holiday season. ^_^

Hope it gets more relaxed at work soon :) Really glad that Silent Hill 2 made it into your top 3 for the year, definitely one my favourite of your 2024 playthroughs, and especially awesome since it's a horror game and you still enjoyed it :D Personally I feel this year was quite a low in terms of AAA games (Silent Hill 2 being the exception), with several exciting games turning out average or bad, but on the bright side there were a lot of really great indie titles released! To my shame I didn't play any 2024 games this year (except demos) so can't give a top ranking at all lol but there are a few indies I will definitely play later! Thank you for another year of great playthroughs and content, and hoping 2025 will be a good one :)

My standout Welonz playthrough for 2024 would have to be the Lies of P, simply because it's different from everything else we've seen on the channel. Also it's kind of funny how Welonz expects December to be a slow month at work, while in my profession December is literally the worst, with an ungodly amount of work to be finished before the end of the year...

Silent Hill 2 was far and away my favorite series by you, not just for some of the great Welonz horror moments but seeing a truly amazing remake of a classic game with your insights on top. Metal Gear Solid 1 was also amazing, it really holds up well even today. It only goes in the crazy hole from there, though entertainingly so. I also really enjoyed Still Wakes the Deep. It's very hard to find a good horror LPer because frankly the more they do horror the less they really get in that tense zone that really works for playing, but also very few people analyze the story and lore like you do, so I hope you continue to be brave on occasion. We were in catchup mode on some old series this year on your channel, we worked through the entire Witcher Series! Don't overwork yourself and looking forward to the new year!

Out of everything you've played this year, Baldur's Gate 3 of course sticks out as a favorite. But nothing else affected me quite like 1000xResist. I can't believe you started that way back in May! It's all so fresh in my mind still. Also, I love the trailer reactions you've started doing. From what I've played, I'd put Animal Well at the top of my list. The sense of discovery and exploration is unmatched. Even when stuck on something, I'd quickly stumble across 3 new things to puzzle out, right up until the very end. And when you do finally figure out the solution to something, it's so satisfying. The only thing keeping me from recommending it for the channel is the lack of a story. So maybe not the best fit. I also like horror games a lot, so your letsplay of Silent Hill 2 is another pleasant surprise of this year. I still hope that someday you'll play Outlast and Outlast II, plus Resident Evil 7 because they're more than just spooky games even if they're lesser game storytelling wise in comparison with SH2. 2024 was a rough year in many ways, but watching your channel always cheered up and inspired never to lose optimistic look at the future. In a way I'm grateful that BG3 will go to 2025 as this letsplay in particular makes me happy, and I'll remember these nice comfortable hours very fondly. Btw, when there's no BG3 episodes (I'm not into DAV, sadly), I watch your old letsplays, and I'm so into Necrobarista right now lol Your voice performance (it is PERFORMANCE, where's your BAFTA and Game Awards nominations?! lol) helps to immerse in this exciting visual novella. Again, thank you for being such saving grace of gaming experience for so many games, we appreciate your hard work! To me 1000xRESIST was absolutely phenomenal and your let's play was amazing (it's how I discovered your channel, after playing it myself I physically needed to watch other people play it lmao). I also love your BG3 let's play, it's one of my favourite games, and I love following your faerunian adventures. I also discovered MGS with you and I loved it ! You, exploring some new genre, the story is hanging good moral and humanity questions. It was really deep journey for me and very meaningful how to address some of my beliefs and views. Can't wait to see the sequel. Having big hopes for that one. MGS1 was a nostalgic run and the game which I finished dozens of times since it's OG release was really joyful to "play" it with You again and observe it via Your eyes.
