October 2024 Channel Update – In My Restless Dreams, I See 1000 Video Games

HI......

It’s October, aka the one month of the year video game developers around the globe conspire to release every title all at once, ripping money from our wallets and free time from our lives. (I’m sure they have plenty of data looking through this but whyyy is it always October!? I would’ve thought November/December would be better for the holiday spendings!)

Don't get me wrong, it’s a good and first world problem to have, but I wouldn't complain if they spaced it out a little 🗿 ANYWAY, I hope you’ve been well and enjoying lots of video games!!

TL;DR

Finished Stuff

Metal Gear Solid 3: Enjoyed my time with the usual Kojima weirdness on top of some very memorable moments - don’t think I’ll be forgetting the sniper battle any time soon. This is the last game in Master Collection Vol 1. I’ll be keeping an eye out to continue my MGS adventures with Vol 2.

We had first looks of:

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Reforged: A 4K remaster/remake of a classic point & click from the 90s. The graphics look great although the audio is a real shame: they didn’t rerecord the voice acting and the existing recordings just aren’t very high quality. I see there’s some fan mod effort/further dev updates to try to improve this though – I’ll be keeping an eye to see if there’s any huge improvements, after which it could be nice to revisit.

Guild Saga: Vanished Worlds: A 2D pixel art CPRG with gameplay in the veins of Baldur’s Gate 3 and a hero-saves-the-world story reminiscent of (my image of) classic JRPGs. The beginning is kinda lore-dumpy but the isometric CRPG gameplay looked cool. In the vid I wondered if there would be romances with the companions and it looks like the devs confirmed that will be a thing 🤣

Europa: An android boy goes on a gliding adventure in search of answers on the last human that lived – super cute and relaxing. Performance is impeccable although the controls and general movement are not nearly as smooth as I’d like them to be.

NEVA: An adventure between a young woman and her wolf friend amidst a dying world. Just as ridiculously gorgeous as Nomada Studio’s previous game, GRIS, and really pleasant & silky smooth to control too. One that I’d definitely would've liked to continue if time allowed!

Current Stuff

Baldur’s Gate 3: Still trucking on! We’re in Act 2 of 3 now – I want to say we’re at least halfway through this act but I can’t tell too well 🤷

SILENT HILL 2 (Remake): Reviews looked great so I jumped in, and wow it’s been great so far. Some performance issues aside I’m really engaged by the atmosphere & surreal storytelling. I especially enjoy that it’s a lot of tension building but without “freaky monsters plastered all over your screen” jumpscares. I think I’m past halfway through now.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure: As a big LIS fan it’s painful to say but this is really middling. From the first 2 episodes: the myriad of bugs & rushed writing tell me this was a troubled production, and IMO the whole thing from story direction to the marketing campaign reek of “someone high up made decisions nobody was allowed to go against”. The underlying mystery is still intriguing, but as it stands, DE is a far cry from the heights of the franchise. I’m in Chapter 2 right now and will be continuing the rest as it releases on Oct 29.

Upcoming Stuff

TBH between BG3/SH2/LIS:DE I am mega hustling right now, so I don’t have capacity to consider much else!! (I’m taking care of myself too don’t worry – I appreciate everyone always reaching out reminding me to rest & relax! I feel bad that so many of my social media updates are always about being busy, etc etc  😭)

I’m not sure which I’ll wrap up first between LIS and SH2, but here’s my rough ideas for next plans:

Other things on my radar:

What have you been enjoying this October? Am I the only one going crazy over how packed it is...!?

Appreciate your support as always, and feel free to let me know any comments/suggestions you have. Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go back to Silent Hill to save my wife who’s been dead for three years...

With Avowed coming in February, I'd love to see a playthrough of Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2! Not before February or anything just, you know, at some point :)

AngryAngryHippo

I'll probably be advocating for Metaphor:Refantazio for a while, which as a Big(80+) game I recognize you won't have time for on the schedule for a good while. But that gives me more time to enjoy it for myself

Prodigal Sol

Sounds neat - I'll keep it in mind!!

Materwelonz

That's fair! Seems like you've got a lot on your plate already. And that's before RL factors in. Gotta take care of yourself, too. 👍

ever want to get back into some FMV games? i just finished Breakout 13 recently and i think it's one of the better ones in the FMV genre. it's a chinese game, apparently based on true stories about electrotherapy bootcamps in china to cure bad kids of rebellion and internet/game addiction, and all the actors are really good in this one. the only caveat i have about the game is that there are decisions where it results in a "Game Over" and you do have to restart and replay that decision again but i enjoyed the story regardless. have a look into it!

dee

I'm well aware of it! They've already said there's a fifth actual final one next year, so I may end up bundling them together.

Materwelonz

Don't want to have hard opinions before seeing the end but so far Double Exposure just feels very rushed, and a big part of LIS to me is about the character relationships, which I don't think they've established too well.

Materwelonz

Yes I saw! I'll probably wait for a less busy time to get back to it, or maybe group it up with a next update.

Materwelonz

Ohhh I did see some of the screenshots - difference was massive!!

Materwelonz

I don't know too much about how that relates to base RDR/how much I'll enjoy RDR, so undecided for now!

Materwelonz

Yeah keep on enjoying some spooktober too! Sinking into pumpkin spice lattes :D I almost finish Silent Hill too. Love watching Your uploads and revisiting some lore stuff with You again and listening to Your interpretations. I see on internet that Veilguard gametime is 40-100 hours (only). I am impressed that they portray that as a linear game, but this amount of hours are crazy for such style. I haven't watch any other videos from LiSDE yet except for the first one (wanna wait for the full game to play first)...but do You think it missed the mark of previous installments? Betting on Max Caufield favoritism?

Andreas Tremere Waya

That would be cool to see one or two vids You Welonz revisiting locations and listen to Sirens luring again :)))

Andreas Tremere Waya

As a long time Silent Hill fan (mostly 2 & 3) really glad that the remake turned out this good and that you're "enjoying" it this much :D The playthrough is awesome! Incidentally and as also a fan of LIS1, I never would have imagined a Konami SH2 remake that would turn out this good while at the same time a direct sequel to LIS1 would turn out this bad :s Take your time for what comes next in your plans, there's no rush, and too many video games!

naoxmon

Hi Welonz, I'm not sure if you saw this or not, or if you'd rather wait. But the first Hades II major content update just dropped. The last weapon is out, the third surface region is open and there are a couple new pets to find. :)

Ryan Chou

You've got so many videos coming out I'm starting to fall behind! I might have to start watching some of them at work to catch up. 🤫 I'm looking forward to checking out the two new Horizon games: Lego and the remaster. I'm not a fan of this trend of remastering relatively recent games, but I can't resist this one dang it. The changes do look pretty impressive, especially the lighting.

Blue72

I'm happy to see Slay the Princess and RDR waiting for when feasible. Are you planning to do Undead Nightmare as well, or just the base Red Dead?

Charles Baldwin

UFO50 is amazing in my opinion, I think you should check it out :) Even if not for YouTube, it's an amazing game

Amit Dinnar

+1 for Mouthwashing. I think you'd really like it! I wouldn't mind waiting for Veilguard til you finish BG3. That's a hell of a lot of fantasy lore to juggle! That shouldn't take 6 months lol. You're probably right about halfway.

Sharrow

I’m enjoying “Just A to The Moon Beach Episode” which is the fourth and possibly final game from that franchise. It’s only about an hour or two long, more like a minisode, so I hope it will be on your radar since you’ve done all the other To The Moon games.

Krieger

It makes me so happy that you’re enjoying Silent Hill, it’s such a wonderfully weird, impactful game that 20+ years on still sticks with me to this day. I don’t envy the video workload, but thanks again for all your hard work for us 🙏 look after yourself and have a fun Halloween 🎃👻

Lord Atrexia

Another game I recommend to see is Metaphor: Refantazio. And yes, October is hurting our wallets.
