January 2024 Channel Update – Why Can't I Play All These Games
Added 2024-01-25 02:00:57 +0000 UTCHi,
I hope you’ve had a good start to your 2024! I can’t believe we’re nearly through the first of 12 months already, time goes by way too fast 🥲
The past few weeks have been a bit rough for me over here: lots of overtime at my day job, just feeling kinda bleh in general. The silver lining is that January is a slower game release month so it's okay to sloth around a bit. The same, however, cannot be said of February… 🗿
TL;DR
- Finished: Spider-Man 2, This Bed We Made, Undertale Yellow, Ghost Trick, GOW Valhalla
- Upcoming: … not fully decided! See the long winded thing below.
Finished Stuff
Spider-Man 2 (15 parts, 1.5-2hrs each): It’s everyone’s beloved Spider-Man, but there are lots of little things that give the impression they had resource constraints: features excluded that were previously in SM1, story pacing oddities, etc. The swinging & combat gameplay are still fun enough for me to overlook all of that though. It’s not a bad game at all, but doesn’t give quite the same kind of “WOW!” factor as SM1.
This Bed We Made (6 parts): Short & sweet with an engaging mystery to boot. I love how they justified snooping through people’s stuff as a maid working at a hotel lol. This story definitely sought to make some social commentary, and I’m particularly interested by how they handled the ending to facilitate that. I really enjoyed this – very much keeping an eye on this developer, Lowbirth Games, for the future.
Undertale Yellow Pacifist Route (9 parts): A fan-made prequel to Undertale (which, my goodness, was played on the channel over EIGHT YEARS AGO....) Not quite as snappy and witty as the original, but the production quality is through the roof esp. for a free fanwork. I enjoyed their take on this universe!
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (17 parts): A visual novel of a deceased soul solving the mystery of their own murder. This is a cult classic that people recommend to me every so often, so I’m glad I got to it! Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartwarming, overall just a fun time.
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC (5 parts*): This is a roguelike mode for Ragnarok but it doesn’t feel like they cheaped out on the narrative at all. Nothing mega groundbreaking, but I appreciate the closure to Kratos’ story for the time being, and the polish is impressive for a free DLC. I took the main story critical path but the roguelike gameplay itself can go on for several more dozen hours.
*The last video hasn’t published yet as of this post - it’ll be out tomorrow!
First Looks:
Welcome to the Karoshi Club demo: A visual novel I decided to check out on a whim about a laid-off game developer interviewing for a new job (very topical 😬). Its aesthetic reminds me of Junji Ito/WORLD OF HORROR. The writing definitely needs a few more passes; right now it reads like someone clumsily parsed the script through a thesaurus.
Pacific Drive Preview: A crafting/survival/take-care-of-your-car adventure through some ghostly paranormal lands. I’m not quite sure what to make of it all yet – the UI is kind of overwhelming but the eeriness is intriguing. I’m quite interested to check out more when the full thing comes out in February.
Lies of P: My first time checking out a “proper” Soulslike title. I found this fun and structurally quite similar to Hollow Knight (which I adore), but multiple people have mentioned to me they found later parts so difficult they gave up on beating the game… I do want to check out more, but I would feel extraordinarily crappy if I had to discontinue a series because I mechanically just could not finish it lol. If anyone has completed the game and has an opinion do feel free to share – I’m esp. curious to know how the difficulty compares to stuff like Sigrun/Gna from GOW (on normal), or making it through SIFU at a low age.
Upcoming Stuff
I’ve been dragging my feet on picking out the next Big Game for the channel, partially because I’ve been under the weather, partially because I still have post-Dragon Age Inquisition PTSD (lol), and on top of that there are a million things coming out in February I’m keeping tabs on:
- 13th: Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden (action RPG by DON’T NOD)
- 14th: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered
- 20th: The Thaumaturge (isometric RPG set in 20th century Warsaw)
- 22nd: Open Roads (by the team who made Tacoma, published by Annapurna)
- 22nd: Pacific Drive
- 29th: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Unfortunately unless if cloning technology is perfected and publicly available in the next 2 weeks, I won’t have capacity for all this 🥲 preliminarily the bolded are the ones I have the most interest in. Hoping for first looks at least for some of the rest! (Feel free to share with me which ones you're interested in too.)
As for a longer series: I hear everyone and their dog whispering Baldur’s Gate 3 to me in my sleep lol. I delayed checking this out because it clashed with DAI previously both in scheduling + genre similarity, but I’m going to look more seriously into this over the next bit.
Going to hedge myself a bit and say:
1) I think everyone is expecting a 100000 part series commitment right off the bat, but I don’t know how this will go for sure – I know nothing about D&D, I glanced at the character creation and a lot of the language is already complete jargon to me, I don’t know anything about the classes/skills/pre-existing lore etc etc. I will try my best to learn & get into it of course, but I have to say all this just in case :’)
2) Even if a full series, I don’t think I can go super fast on it because a) I’d like to have capacity to check out other stuff concurrently and b) I feel like I pushed myself too hard with DAI last time, and it was Not Great.
TL;DR of what’s on my mind re: the next Big Games on the channel: BG3, FF7R around the corner, plus I still haven't given up on Lies of P yet... yeah this already looks crazy. It's a great time to be a gamer but man they really need to hurry up with that cloning tech!!
Sorry these plans aren’t actually that concrete – it's because I don't know what the heck's gonna happen either lol. There’s 5000 things racing through my mind I’m trying to take into consideration. I think it will look something along the lines of what I mentioned though, and I'm hoping it'll all just magically sort itself out 🧙
EDIT: Figured I could just open a poll for patrons+ to show interest levels in all the games in this post! Feel free to participate here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/97145680
Anyway! That's all the rambling from me for now. Feel free to let me know your thoughts/suggestions/comments below!!
Have a great rest of January,
Welonz

I personally didn't know anything about D&D before starting BG3 and it's one my favorite games of all time now.

2024-02-10 05:42:56 +0000 UTCYou know, I didn't vote for BG3 for a weird reason. I really,r eally,r eally, really, really want to hear someone play BG3, (I can't play it being a blind gamer), but I know that my fiance, who is sighted, wants to play it at some point when she has time. Should definitely listen to her play it, not the super convenient Welonz playthrough that might happen, right? :) I've just heard so, so much about BG3. The level of freedom it provides you, so much that lots of people had very few experiences where whatever popped into their heads couldn't be done. I've heard that other RPG developers are angry at BG3 for setting the bar too high. Just so many great things, plus I grew up with the Baldur's Gate series, (always played by friends of mine of course).

2024-02-09 03:13:31 +0000 UTCSpeaking of Baldur's Gate 3, I also didn't know anything about DND. Had to look up the rules online to get me up to speed. And a good thing too because the in-game tutorials didn't do a good enough job for noobs like me. And since you not only control yourself but also three of your companions who are of different classes, it won’t do to just learn about one single class which you will have planned to play. (Maybe the devs realized it too because they included the feature to modify your build easily at any stage of the game.) However, after getting some idea of the basics of DND from different online sources, I could play the game just fine. Still to make a synergized character build you'd need meta-knowledge of DND rules which makes the combat easier but is not needed. For me, the game being a turn-based CRPG helped a lot. It slowed down the combat enough for me to plan my moves more carefully. The combat is really fun once you know how to maximize your potential. However, what got me hooked was the characters and storytelling. This is hands down my most favorite narrative and cast in a video game. The companions of the game are the heart and soul. And the whole narrative is so unbelievably responsive to the player’s action that it’s astounding. I don’t think there’s any right way to play it. If you roleplay as someone who is a goody two show then perhaps you’d want to help everybody and go out of your way to complete side quests. On the other hand, if you’re playing a self-serving “pragmatic” person then you’d do things that only further your goal. Your companions range from one end to the other. I never thought I’d see the day another game trumps the companions from the Mass Effect series. So Welonz, if you decide to give this game a shot then please don’t rush it or push yourself too hard. I’ve seen DND veteran streamers take their time to finish this game. However long you decide to make this series we’ll be with you every step of the way.

2024-02-03 20:12:50 +0000 UTCJust upgraded my account so I can whisper "Baldur's Gate 3!" in your sleep, together with others who've been doing it every night. ;) Seriously though, please take all the time you need before starting the series. I'm following your channel not just to see you play my favourite games, but also to learn what kind of new titles I might enjoy because our tastes in video games largely coincide. As to BG3, I think you don't have to worry too much of the jargons or rules before you start. The main reason why it became so popular despite belonging to a niche subgenre is because it's quite accessible to new players, and it has helpful tooltips everywhere. You may probably miss a few mechanics at first, but I'm sure your followers will help you on the comment section without spoiling, as they usually do with other games. Why I'm so excited about the prospect of your playing BG3 is because it's such a game that rewards players like you, specifically. From what I've seen, the worst type of gamers who don't find BG3 that great were those who focus on things like levelling up, getting cool items, and killing all the bosses to "beat the game" without paying much attention to the story or lore. In comparison, you always immerse yourself in the game world and try to read everything to understand the lore. Not only that, but you also often show great insights on the making of games you play. As BG3 is such a kind of game which rewards slow-paced players like you, and also gets praised for having set the bar that defines what next-generation RPGs should be like, I feel that you'd be the perfect person to try it. Also, it's a game that is best be enjoyed one small bit at a time. It doesn't have filler content (e.g. fetch quests) or any grind element, but filled to the brim with little secrets or alternate paths that you'd likely to miss if you're only focused on seeing the ending credit. So, even if you play it very slowly, or only for a short amount of time per a day, it will hardly feel boring because you'll always find something interesting. Even every animal you meet in BG3 has its own voiced dialogue lines - which is even more amazing considering the fact that you won't hear any of it unless you have a specific skill or a potion - so it will unlikely to give you a PTSD like Dragon Age: Inquisition did, with the amount of filler content it has to pad the playtime. (To be fair, I think DA:I is a good game, still. It's just unfortunate that they tried to make it feel somewhat like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim, with its "open world features" but failed miserably.) Anyway, please take your time, and you don't have to feel pressured into starting the series if you don't feel like it. It's unlikely we'll have many RPGs of BG3's calibre anytime soon, and I can keep whispering the name a few more weeks without losing too much sleep myself (you know, the timezone difference.) Sorry for the wall of texts!

2024-01-30 12:05:16 +0000 UTCLooks like BG3 playthrough is getting closer and closer...nice! I know it's a big and unfamiliar game/setting, but there is no need to be intimidated - the rules and mechanics are pretty simple and straightforward and you are a pro:). I'm sure you'll get the hang of everything in no time and in case of any trouble you have literally hundreds of people on the channel ready to give you hints/advice. To avoid burnout, I'd recommend a slower pace (which would also give you more time to read through the comments and fish out helpful tips) and to not stress about doing everything/missing out on something - as others already mentioned, it's impossible not to miss out on many things in a single playthrough, so no reason to worry about it. For difficulty I suggest the balanced level - it's a turn based game, so the fights will not be much quicker on easy, but will soon turn into mindless clicking. Apart from BG3, as a born and bred in Warsaw, I'm most interested in Thaumaturge, so I'm hoping for at least a first look. Sadly it's not doing great in the poll. Then again, I doubt I'll be able to get to it at the release, so perhaps it's better it will not be at the top of your priority list...

2024-01-29 20:47:31 +0000 UTCVII Rebirth playthrough is was I'm looking forward to the most seeing as how the Remake one was how I found the channel. Gonna play through it myself first though, I'm already on media blackout for it lol

2024-01-28 08:54:39 +0000 UTCJust an aside about BG3 lol I didn't play BG3 yet but pretty sure it's similar in a lot of ways to DOS2, which I played, and just want to give a quick warning since pretty much everyone wants you to play it. There's no doubt Larian are excellent at writing characters and stories, and on that front BG3 will probably be fantastic. But the turn-based combat, following the D&D ruleset, can be at times a real pain in the ass, and I say that as someone who enjoys this type of combat. Especially since you're not too familiar with D&D, be prepared to have to learn a ton of rules, pay attention to a lot of stats, and even after doing so, at times the combat system will just kick your ass for no good reason, and some fights will just take forever. That said I'm not trying to dissuade you to play it, just a warning to be prepared for the above, and my main advice would be to not hesitate to save scum a lot, which you don't usually do in your playthroughs. Save all the time and don't hesitate to reload and turn back on a fight, or even a choice. Because there's a lot of freedom in Larian games, about what you can do and how, but also about what can happen, including to main characters :P

2024-01-26 03:12:48 +0000 UTCLiterally interested in all the games you've listed, and didn't realize until now that half of them were actually due for february :x Personally, the one I'm the most eager to see as a playthrough is FF7 Rebirth. Definitely interested to see the other ones too but it doesn't have to be in february and I totally can wait for when you have the time or feel like it :) Imo it would probably be better to also delay starting BG3 to after you've finished Rebirth, since we don't really know how long it is yet, and both feel like big games. Hope things get better at work and in general!

2024-01-26 02:59:18 +0000 UTCNot much to say except thanks as always for all the amazing content you produce! Any upcoming game that strikes your fancy, I will be 100% down for.

2024-01-25 23:14:01 +0000 UTCThanks for the Ghost Trick videos Welonz they were so much fun! Looking forward to whatever is next (I voted for Open Roads as it looks great).

2024-01-25 20:38:03 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed the game, The Bed We Made. I never heard of the game before you played it and it was really, really great! Kudos to you for discovering it and sharing your gameplay of it. Now completely off-topic, have you seen the movie D&D: Honor Among Thieves? It's really fun to watch and no need for D&D knowledge. Last time I checked, it's on amazon prime videos.

2024-01-25 19:07:05 +0000 UTCSeconding the people who enjoyed Ghost Trick, that playthrough was a treat :) I feel like you're maybe a bit too worried about the difficulty of Souslikes, given how well you did at Hollow Knight! Yeah, it's not the same because HK is 2D and a platformer, but it does seem like there's a large overlap between people who enjoy and are good at Hollow Knight and people who enjoy and are good at FromSoftware Soulslikes.

2024-01-25 18:22:26 +0000 UTCI'd like to throw in my hat for Lies of P, I played the more difficult version but never found it that bad. On the other hand i also had a ton of soulslike experience. I personally can see a few frustrations, but overall I found the game quite fair. As long as you accept that it REALLY wants to you block - and not dodge - some attacks.

2024-01-25 15:38:05 +0000 UTCI'd love to watch a BG3 playthrough, but I would caution you that it's not a game to be a completionist with. It's designed for multiple playthroughs with different character motivations, so it's impossible to see everything in one go, and you'll burn out if you open every little barrel and crate along the way. It might even be worth taking it an act at a time... Act 1 is about 25 hours, Act 2 is about 50, and Act 3 is about 25. Of course, you might start losing the story if you break it up like that, too... conundrum. If you do play it though, just go with the flow. Make your own choices and see what happens. Deal with the consequences of what does happen. They did an amazing job creating a robust world that actually responds to your choices.

2024-01-25 15:05:01 +0000 UTCHey Welonz, I've beaten Lies of P multiple times now, so I have a little bit of insight in the game. :D Regarding the raising difficulty levels of Lies of P. Yes, it is true, the game is getting more difficult (primarily the bosses) . But don't let that put you off! Even if I still think that Elden Ring would have been a much easier introduction to the soulslike genre, it's still no big deal. Because Lies of P also offers you a powerfull way to make the bosses easier for you. It is also fully optional, so you can decide, when to use or not. For some of the bossfights I think it is a great way to help someone new to the genre, so that she/he is not getting frustrated and throws controllers or something. :D. I won't spoilt it, you'll see what I mean by the second boss (or rather at his door). So don't worry that you won't make it, that won't happen. Even if you have to sweat or think a little more from time to time or boss to boss. Don't be afraid! :) Would really love to see you dive deeper into Lies of P and the world of soulslikes. Because they are such a joy to play/watch and you only scratched the surface yet. :) Regarding BG3. The thing, that also makes BG3 special in cRPC genre, is, that it has managed to streamline the many different classes and builds, so that you will not get overwhelmed. For example, I played a cRPG, which was released in 2022, called Pathfinder - Wrath of the righteous. This game is also very very great, one of the best cRPGs out there. But it is so packed full of stuff, that everytime I reached a new level and had to level up my party, it took me 2 to 4 hours, nearly every time. It throws new spells, feats, classes, subclasses, etc etc at you constantly, with which you have to deal with, in order not to failskill you. You need a lot of extra reading and work beside your play in Pathfinder, which can be very exhausting and frustrating. In that manner BG3 is on a complete other level, as it was designed, that you can level up you and your party very fast in comparison, but without sacrificing D&D leveling. That is only one example, why BG3 is perfect for a cRPG beginner. And Welonz, do not hesitate to look something up here and there, if you are having problems understanding something, that is completly normal and the best way to fully understanding the mechanics of a cRPG. Really looking forward to BG3...if you decide to play it. :) PS: Sorry for the wall of text.

2024-01-25 13:45:48 +0000 UTCCan't wait to play FF7R2 and see your reactions and theories too! Also, I remember from one of your tweets, you mention you are playing a weeb gacha game? Any chance of that game being posted on the Weeblonz channel? lol

2024-01-25 11:38:36 +0000 UTCAlthough I haven't played it myself, I do hope you find BG3 fun ! From all I've seen, it really is an incredible accomplishment in the gaming landscape. Though, with how long it is and how completionist you can be, I expect this to still be a series in 4 years lol
Captain Kashup
2024-01-25 10:43:19 +0000 UTCA few things to note with BG3 that I'd recommend - first, I know you are a story-first LPer, but I recommend you do play on normal difficulty because I think that the combat scenarios are an important part of that game and don't deserve to be sidelined. Secondly, don't let the comments railroad you! There are many branching paths in the game and you'll be unlikely to see absolutely everything in a single playthrough, and I think it's most interesting when you make the choices you want to instead of trying to see as much Content as possible. There are a few things I would recommend you try not to miss (recruiting companions for example), but other than that I'd try to not get too bogged down on following up on the comments telling you to check out every little path, as it'll take you out of the immersion. That said, do try to explore fully when you can! There's a lot to discover!
Julia (Blackhole)
2024-01-25 10:05:03 +0000 UTCIf you do a BG3 let's play, well first I'll be very happy, but also I think it'd be good to only post a video every 2 or 3 days, so you don't have a bad time forcing yourself to get out a 1hr+ video every day,,,
Reiemye
2024-01-25 10:02:00 +0000 UTCAbout BG3, I don't think you should be worried about not knowing much about D&D, I didn't know anything either and didn't have any problems and I'm sure youtube comments will be polite and in detail explain you everything you want and don't want to know. At its core, it is just a fantasy RPG, similar to Dragon Age Origin, you have your party, and your camp and go around the world exploring and doing quests. There are no side quests that feel like a chore as in DAI or FFXVI but the game is very long and when you start it will be a long ride. The only thing that is different from other similar games that you played is that combat a turn-based cRPG. I was not sure if I would like that kind of "slow" combat but did find it fun but, I was playing for myself, as Let's play guess it is a little different because some fights can be very long, 30+ minutes.
riche
2024-01-25 06:51:52 +0000 UTCLies of P got more accessible in recent(ish) patches, so the experience of people who played earlier versions may be different from what you get! There's a lot of effective tools at your disposal, from weapons to buffs to throwables to summons... to just straight up running past tough enemies (unless you're locked in a boss arena, of course). I have faith in you! That being said, I totally get the concern about potentially hitting a wall. (I'm thinking of one particular boss that could be trouble. But even for that fight, the consensus is that it's more aggravating than hard...) It should go without saying, but: I respect your choice no matter what, and appreciate the content you put out. 🙏

2024-01-25 06:21:37 +0000 UTCI can't wait to watch you play pretty much any of these games. BG3 is a heck of a ride but I can't even imagine how long of a series that would be. As for FF7 Rebirth, I loved both your Crisis Core and Remake playthroughs. Those being your only FF7 games gives you such a unique perspective that honestly I have not seen anywhere else. I would love to see what Rebirth is like for you.

2024-01-25 05:34:49 +0000 UTCI think FF7R is a must considering how much you liked the first one and even Crisis Core. Considering how they managed to turn a 4-5 hour intro from the original game into a 40+ hour epic I can only imagine what they are gonna do now they are adapting the real meat of the story and I'd love to see you're reaction to some of the big moments that are gonna be in it. Other than that i will throw my hat in with the rest saying I think BG3 would be up your alley. It's definitely a lot at first and it might be worth looking up a beginners guide for the mechanics once you've played a bit as I don't think the game does a great job at explaining all it's systems but once you wrap you're head around it none of it is all that insanely complex. Being pretty much the original RPG a lot of games that you have played borrow liberally from D&D and I suspect once you get into it and learn the quirks it might feel more familiar than you expect. Also strangely enough considering it hadn't even been on my radar until i saw you're first look, Pacific Drive seems like it could be an intriguing one. The mystery managed to hook me and now i will be getting it on release, and also I expect it won't be as massive as some of the other games on you're list so could be a fun one. But really whatever you're feeling I'm sure it will be an enjoyable watch!

2024-01-25 04:35:07 +0000 UTCAs for BG3. I adore it. I'd love to see you play it. However, some tips, given what you've said! 1) Play on easy difficulty if you're worried. If you miss having a challenge, up it to medium. 2) If you're unsure abt rules, don't play a spellcaster (except Bard IF being charismatic and skillful appeals to you, as Bard isnt available as a companion). You will have spellcaster in your party if you need them. 3) Feel free to look up rules/guides for MECHANICS (or ask people) if something confuses you. The game doesn't always explain things well, but it is fairly consistent after you learn how things work. 4) Do 'long rests' more often than you need to, to trigger story cutscenes. 5) DO NOT worry abt being completionist. Follow things that interest you. (You will probably have enough XP/gold.) 6) This includes story paths. You will block options off. Thats okay. That's intended! 7) Don't be afraid to make suboptimal choices, esp when based in roleplay or "I wonder what would happen if..." curiosity. It is impossible to play "correctly" anyway. Many people letsplay this. It's not important to have a "good" playthrough, but a unique one. And one you have fun with!! Finally: 8) all of my advice is just advice. Discard anything that doesn't work for you. I just want you to have a good experience with it. (And like I said, this includes waiting to play until you feel up for it!) ❤️

2024-01-25 03:28:36 +0000 UTCI'd say it's totally fine to give yourself some time with small games until you actually feel ready for something big. Do the stuff you'd enjoy. There's tons of little stuff I'd love to see you cover! For me personally it definitely doesn’t need to be super big to be something I want to tune in for. (In fact it can sometimes be a detriment - I get annoyed at longer series I don't care abt, cause they take up time from other things.)

2024-01-25 03:05:31 +0000 UTCI've already said a bunch of times in youtube comments, but I really adored your Ghost Trick playthrough. Thanks for that!

2024-01-25 02:57:16 +0000 UTCI made myself wait until I was mentally ready to tackle BG3 😂 Being new to D&D (apart from reading old Dragon Lance books when I was a kid), I knew I'd have to really do some background reading, etc., to get to grips with all the terminology and game mechanics, and I knew I couldn't do it unless my brain was 100% on board. I'm over 100hrs into it now, and I have to say, once I got past the steep learning curve and initial feelings of being overwhelmed, I'm reeeeally enjoying it. It has so much depth - and countless branching narratives - and REAL, story-changing consequences to your character's actions, it's kind of crazy. I will admit to starting out on the story mode difficulty, though, until I got a handle on things. And I'm glad I did. I think it would have all been a bit too much for me, personally, if I'd gone in all gung-ho.

2024-01-25 02:42:18 +0000 UTCBG3 is something I'd love to see for sure. That said, it is a meaty game with a staggering amount of contant/depth. If you do decide to make it an ongoing series, I'd maybe reccomend waiting 'til after FF7R. If/when you do start a playthrough, by all means take your time with it! And definitely take time for yourself too!
