February 2023 Channel Update – Going Though The List

Hi!

Bit of a later update again, apologies!! I forgot February is a short month 🗿…

Hope you’ve been well! January over here felt like there was So Much happening, but it’s calmed down a bit (my bathtub faucet is fixed thank goodness) so I am now a sane person again, for now 🙃

I checked & it looks like I did everything I said I was gonna do from the January update post! I know video games are entertainment to be enjoyed and all, but when you make a list, stick to it, and knock items out one after the other it feels really good hahah.

Let’s get started!!

TL;DR

Finished Since Last Update

SIGNALIS (11 parts): Anime-style survival horror game with a hugely cryptic and surreal story. It’s atmospheric and oozes sooo much identity & quality. There were some annoyances with finnicky interaction points but nothing that hugely detracted from the experience. I found the style of this whole game (despite the freaky spooky stuff) really up my alley. I think anyone who enjoys chewing on a story long after the game’s done would enjoy this tons too!!

Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII – Reunion (18 parts): Intentional or not this is a funny game lol. There are parts of the story I enjoyed, but overall I think it's a difficult recommend for anyone not 1) already engaged in the FF7 world and 2) familiar with the “weebiness” of JRPGs. The updated graphics are nice, but the narrative, script, voice acting direction, localization are very mid-2000s-Japanese-game style. People familiar with anime stuff will be fine but I imagine those who aren’t will find this jarring, esp. with it being tonally quite different even compared to FF7R. It did get me excited again for FF7R Part 2 though - really looking forward to that!

Deliver Us Mars (6 parts): A story of space exploration & sequel to Deliver Us the Moon. Aside from the puzzles that can be monotonous and/or frustrating (heard complaints about the rock climbing although I didn’t mind it too much), it’s far more ambitious than its predecessor narratively. Back in Moon, a lot of characters were just disembodied voices in the headset, but this time they have much more depth and nuance. Superb voice acting too. Hope they get to a third game to round out the trilogy!

Dead Space Remake (21 parts): Mom, I’ve finally finished a Dead Space game in its entirety…!

TBH after playing the whole thing I feel like Dead Space is more a shooter with creepy elements rather than a full on horror thing. Maybe it's because they don't do BIG ASS CREEPY FACE IN YOUR SCREEN kind of jumpscares? I'm thankful cause I don't think I’d be able to handle that lol.

I’ve mentioned both in the playthrough and on Twitter already but the lighting design is really outstanding: the ship is often dark and unlit, but never to a point where it feels like I have to blindly feel my way around. Really great stuff.

I also took a first look at:

SEASONS: A letter to the future: A traveler attempts to document & preserve their soon-to-be-destroyed world by taking photos, recording sounds, and writing journals. There are some magical components in this world too where memories can tangibly saved or erased, or people having dream-related illnesses. Definitely a slower-paced game for a calm & relaxing time.

Progress on Current Stuff

Dragon Age 2: Back in Thedas with the second DA game! A million people have tried to warn me about how this is not a good game, rushed & short development cycle, blah blah. I agree it shows in places but so far I’ve had zero problems enjoying it, though I do think I am an easy-to-please gamer in general lol.

To my knowledge DA2 is a lot shorter than DAO so I don’t think this’ll end up being a 100+ part series 😂 It looks like the story is divided into 3 Acts. I’m pretty squarely in the beginning Act 1 right now!

Upcoming Stuff

The next big thing I’m interested in is Resident Evil 4 Remake in late March – yet another horror game!!! Are we really horror game channel now…?

Other than that though, I don’t see much coming out in the next month so I might spend some time checking out all sorts of random stuff. There should be a Returnal (PC version) first look soon, and I was thinking of getting into Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order to see If I’m interested for the sequel in April too. (Not sure how I’ll find it yet though so no promises on that front!)

I’ll be away for about 2 weeks in May, so I’ve also been trying to preparing some smaller non-release-time-sensitive series to fill the gap. Currently thinking of one of the Dark Pictures Anthology titles - I’ve somehow missed them all so far since they keep coming out when I’m busy with other stuff. If there’s anything small (<5 hours or so) you’d like to see during this time, feel free to let me know!

All I’ve got for now! As always thanks for sticking around, feel free to let me know your thoughts, and all the best to your end of February & incoming March 😊

oh that's definitely WAY too scary for me lol, but in any case I don't think it's actually available for anyone who didn't get PT in the PS store when it was available (which I didn't)

Materwelonz

Hi Welonz! New Patreon here! :) I hope it helps! <3

GameFuror

It's hard to think of <5 hour games... There's always PT if you've never played it, also continues the spooky trend

Mads

I echo how amazing Pentiment is, but I don't think you'd love it as requires reading a ton of text with no voiceover. I would love to see hi-fi rush! Great action game, only takes about 10 hours to beat, really fun characters and story.

spsrr

Yesss! Play jedo fallen order!! It will also give me a refresher for when survive hits :3 Also i wouldn't be mad at continuing returnal 👀

Glen Jones

I haven't checked out Forspoken but have passively kept up with the "discourse" around it. I guess it's exactly like how you described it here: some great stuff, some not so great, in any case there will be those who can find joy in it.

Materwelonz

The length won't be suitable for my break period but I've heard lots of good things about it - would be great if I could take a first look at it at least sometime!

Materwelonz

Ahh I've played a bit of this a long time ago before off camera - great game!

Materwelonz

It's longer than you requested (HowLongToBeat says about 15 hours), but I was wondering if you'd taken a look at Pentiment: https://pentiment.obsidian.net/. It's on XBox Game Pass and a finalist for awards like the Game Developers Choice Awards for Best Narrative. It's one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a while, although fair warning that there's a lot of text and none of it is voiced so it might not be the simple short game to pick up that you're looking for.

Rachael Maxwell

Yup I have before the whole channel thing! Great game, but it's one of the few where I really don't think an LP would do it justice though

Materwelonz

Papers, Please is really short and might be fun content.

Etix

I still think until dawn was the best one but I do like the others too!

Vivi Cheung

I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan to begin with but Fallen Order was a really fun adventure game on its own. I think you'd enjoy it.

Eric H.

Ooh that's awesome news if you start a SW Jedi: Fallen Order LP soon :D Didn't see that one coming but now I can't wait for it and hope you enjoy it! Also excited for the Returnal 1st look (possibly full LP?) and the future RE4 remake, which I hope will turn out just as good as the RE2 remake.

naoxmon

House of ashes is far and away the best of the series and very different than the others too. Would recommend it

Resident Evil 4 is one of those all-time classic games that I never got around to trying for whatever reason, so I'm looking forward to finally seeing what all the fuss is about, I know you have a million other things going on, but I was curious if you had a chance to check out the Forspoken demo? A played a little and it's still a tough one for me to decide on. The open world itself seemed kind of dated and not that fun to explore, but there are aspects that I like, such as the characters and magic system. Despite the blah reviews, there seems to be a lot of positive word-of-mouth from people playing it.

Blue72

Welonz playing Returnal! That's a dream come true. Your skill is amazing and it is so much fun watching you play and also following the story. I would really love a Returnal LP. Thanks for all your amazing content <3

Leela

Warning about recording Returnal: there’s no title screen, the game throws you into the thick of it as soon as you boot it up, and there’s no way to revert the game to its original “blank” slate short of deleting the save file. Curious how you’ll find Returnal. It’s a very challenging game, though the difficulty is front-loaded; if you can beat the first two levels you CAN beat the whole game. (And you’ve beaten Hades, which I think is harder.) Its story has an almost literary quality to it and is something I’ve been chewing on years after I beat it.

Jeffrey Hardy Quah

Can't remember if you said you'd played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. That's a game I'm sure you wouldn't regret spending 3-4 hours on

Adam Hughes

The original gamecube RE4 is my most played game. I intentionally have not watched much marketing for the remake, but if they keep the vibe and tone it is going to be amazing. It should be a great candidate for a LP

Thomas Mc

I'll look forward to it! <3 (or which ever one you end up playing, even little hope xD)

Vivi Cheung

Good, short games I can think of that I dont think you have played - Far Lone Sails (and the sequel), Strange Horticulture and The Case of the Golden Idol. I am way behind on your videos but looking forward to catching up!

Wilsham

time for a 24 hour no sleep game marathon 😂

Materwelonz

Oo yeah I've heard some of them aren't great, atm I'm looking at House of Ashes since it has the highest reviews on Steam!

Materwelonz

Next year February will be 29 days, so more time to play 😁

Frans

The two-week break seems like a perfect time to play some shorter indie games you didn't have time for before I think! ^w^

Calliope Rannis

Thank you Welonz ! Hope you like Fallen Order enough to start a playthrough , it's a really good game, not revolutionary, but definitely enjoyable.

Jack Frost

Hey... You might wanna give Little hope (dark pictures anthology) a miss, it's mainly just cheap jumpscares... They use the same high pitch scream every time too. It poooop. Other than that, I can't wait to see which of those games you'll play!

Vivi Cheung

I am really looking forward to the resi 4 remake . I hope they do it justice. I was not as impressed with resi 3 remake but 2 was really good . So keeping my fingers crossed as I feel that is one of the most loved in the resi franchise .

Megamusic

Loved Dead Space and can't wait for RE4 Remake, we really horror game channel now.

Captain Kashup

love you welonz!
