August 2022 Channel Update – Summer Blues, Q&A and Upcoming Poll

Hi all,

Hope you’re staying out of the summer heat! (Or if you’re down south, the cold!)

Here in Western Canada it’s been REALLY hot… that and the lull in release schedule I think has been making me feel kinda off in the past few weeks, like I can’t muster up the energy to do anything. This happens every now and then though so I think it’s a summer thing. A sign from the Gods telling me to go touch grass?! 💀

Anyway, we’ve got a big update today with polls and Q&As and all that. Keep reading on!

TL;DR

Finished Since Last Update

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong (30 parts): Aside from the bugs and stuff it very much did stick the landing! The ending segments are some of the most thrilling scenes I’ve played recently. I really think the devs (Big Bad Wolf) are doing interesting things in the choose-your-own-adventure genre with the character builds and wide storyline branching. Excitedly looking forward to their next work!

The Quarry (14 parts): B movie-type horror with dumb teenagers – good fun! I wish there was a bit more resolution towards the end but I’m happy enough with what’s here. It makes me wanna go back to try out the Dark Pictures Anthology games too if time allows, but I heard those ones aren’t quite as good.

Stray (11 parts): Cat game needs no introduction. Super atmospheric, great sound design, but ultimately I think the focus is more on getting to walk around as a kitty with realistic movement and less so a groundbreaking narrative or anything like that.

I went 2 parts a day for this shorter series and liked how that pacing turned out. Will keep this type of schedule in mind for the future!

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – nirvanA Initiative (48 parts): A murder mystery visual novel fully embracing Japanese weirdness. Just like the first game it’s a massively enjoyable ride with endearing characters, but does stumble towards the end. Hard to say much without spoilers but I think if you enjoyed the first you should reasonably enjoy this one as well.

Some side thoughts on Japanese vs English dub again: I am always so torn on this topic with accessibility concerns and all, but in hindsight I think Japanese dub was the right call for this one:  there were a number of errors in the localization that the Japanese VA made possible to catch, and I felt like I was able to add way more value to this series with getting to talk about the original puns or just sharing random cultural tidbits too. (I hope those who tuned in don’t forget about the chouchin kowai/scary lanterns thing 🤣)

Progress on Current Stuff

I just wrapped up AINI so there’s not too much here right this moment. We’ve got As Dusk Falls, an interactive visual novel-ish adventure game with a stop motion storybook aesthetic and branching storylines. This’ll be a short, 6-video series – trying not to overcommit with the poll coming up!

Upcoming Stuff

Nobody asked for this lol but August 14 is the 10th release anniversary of Sleeping Dogs, which some of you might know is one of first LPs I’ve done the channel. I think I’m gonna do a first look (technically a 50000th look) just to reminisce and maybe get some new eyes on the game.

I don’t think anyone clarified who has the rights now but if Sleeping Dogs was one of the IPS sold by Square Enix to Embracer Group a few months back, I hope it means we can see something (anything!!!) from this series in the future 🥲

I’m also looking into a Cult of the Lamb first look soon – it’s got quite a bit of a buzz around it atm!

Q&A

Something Something Creators Should Connect With Viewers From Time To Time, so here we go! Submit your questions here: https://bit.ly/WelonzQnA2022

Some of you might remember the last time I did this it took mooonths…. part because I prioritized gameplay videos 100% of the time, and the other part because I found the amount of questions too daunting to even start answering lol. So this time I’ll limit it to patrons/YouTube members, keep this open for just a week or so and pick out the most interesting ones I haven’t answered 500 times already. Fingers crossed this video will actually get made in a reasonable amount of time 🤣

Poll

I haven’t finalized the list yet but I’m going to draw mainly from stuff in previous polls, e.g.

HOWEVER….. I think the Next Big Thing is a while aways (God of War in November), so I’m also considering some massive 100+ hours stuff too, in particular:

I don’t wanna get anyone’s hopes up by putting this out there prematurely LOL but I do have a lot of interest in trying out Elden Ring after all that hype early in the year, especially since I have some experience with the fight-a-boss-100-times genre now with SIFU/Hollow Knight. Then we also have BOTW2 coming out next year and I still haven’t really tried a Switch game on the channel yet…!

I’ll put up the poll over the next few days after some more thinking. Let me know you have any thoughts on the shortlist so far and/or anything else. Thanks for everything as always, and have a great August!

Welonz

Comments

I hope they will release it to the switch in a far future at least. And got it. Before shipping anything I'll let you know in advance. Thank you Welonz.

Berlen Alberto

I have an iPhone so that could work, but ideally if some HD remaster could come to PC that would be best 🙏 I've got a PO box here: #626 - 8623 Granville Street Vancouver, BC V6P 5A2 Canada (if you do send anything let me know in advance!)

Materwelonz

Will do, count on it. And yeah, if you don't have a ds or a 3ds that's a problem. If I remember correctly it's also on Ios, but that's probably not better. Do you have a po box?

Berlen Alberto

Feel free to bring it up the next time there's a vote! This one's already started so I can't add any new options. But specifically relating to Ghost Trick - IIRC it's on the DS (which I don't have), so that's a barrier.

Materwelonz

If you are have in list Phoenix Wright, can you take in to consideration Ghost trick phantom detective? It's a really good game from the the same writer of the original ace attorney trilogy and it's a stand alone game, so it wouldn't take as much time. It's also unknown to most people and to me that's a shame.

Berlen Alberto

I watched an LP of Alien Isolation when it came out, and there's definitely some filler towards the end. You can tell the devs were given a target playtime. Still a good game though!

Liam McDermott (JeevesBond)

Another Q&A another chance for me to try and think of a not-completely stupid question that hasn't already been asked. 🤔

Blue72

Oh I WISH there would be any new announcements about them. There were rumors about CoL 2, but, gonna be honest, it doesn't look like Ubi went far with this idea. Thanks for the consideration!

Dave

Looks like it's not enforced at all (countless complete livestreams/LPs on youtube/twitch) but i can understand your hesitation.

Eric H.

I took a quick look but already kind of knew what it was about, can't really say much more without spoiling though. Be careful not to read too much about it, there aren't big spoilers to be had but it might change your view on the game even before you eventually play it. It might not be perfect but it really is unlike any other game, and something you have to experience yourself! Not going to pretend it will be all fun and games (lol) but you've already played sequences in several other games that have a similar level of tension by now, and I'm sure you'll do fine :)

naoxmon

I think Child of Light and Rapture are short enough I can consider them for small gaps as opposed to this poll mainly for filling a big gap! If there's any sequels/related works coming out soon for either, that would be the best time for me to get to them!

Materwelonz

Ah yeah I think when people say it's long its in relation to the content (repetition + stress) and not the absolute number of hours! Quite a number of discussions pop up if you google "alien isolation too long" if you're interested to take a look. I actually do want to try it out eventually too, but maybe after some more building up courage!! First person is still such a big mental hurdle for me lol

Materwelonz

It would be really nice to see you dive into Elden Ring and hear your thoughts and interpretations on the lore of Elden Ring. I think this game would be very enjoyable for you....even with the 100 times genre thingy. Just give it a try :D

Zischrot

lol excuses Welonz :P Alien Isolation is the same 20-30h length as most games on that list, quite shorter than 60h Andromeda or Dragon Age and a lot shorter than 100h BOTW or Elden Ring! If people are saying it's too long that's probably about the pacing and the fact that's still a long time to spend stressed out, but that's very subjective and objectively it's not a long game. I totally understand if you don't want to chance it though lol no worries :)

naoxmon

I'm still hoping she does Disco Elysium eventually, especially since it's currently about 90% voice acted.

Evan!!

Ah that's rubbish. Fair enough mate, find yourself something stress-free instead (:

Stephen Brown

Yeah it's pretty obscure rn! Looks like quite the hidden gem, to me at least. ^w^

https://support.sega.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007070517-Can-I-stream-Persona-5-Royal-

Materwelonz

I don't believe those restrictions exist for P5R tho, they were P5 only?!

Calmmo

NO THANK YOU... I am not gonna tempt fate like that 🤣 I need to atleast start with something shorter first, everywhere I look everyone complains about Alien Isolation being toooo long!

Materwelonz

Sega & Atlus never walked back on the streaming restrictions so I can't consider Persona 5 at all. Not opposed to Lost Judgment, I just didn't have time to get to it when it came out alongside a whole bunch of stuff with it being on the longer end

Materwelonz

Oh dear I totally forgot about the whole voicing thing with Phoenix Wright hahaha

Materwelonz

I *am* casually keeping track of Persona 5 Royal coming to PC soonish, but I think the problem with Persona is more Sega & Atlus' streaming restrictions, which I don't think they've ever officially walked back on.

Materwelonz

Leave me alone until October at least 🤣

Materwelonz

Oh, I wouldn't mind putting this one in the poll too! I've heard Sekiro doesn't have stuff with builds so that honestly might be even more up my alley.

Materwelonz

Ooo I haven't heard of this one at all - thanks, I'll keep it in mind!!

Materwelonz

I put "story only", not "main story only" - happy go through with side quests that have some narrative relevance, but would pass on stuff like "collect 50 Asari writings"!

Materwelonz

cough*alien-isolation*cough Come on Welonz, don't be scared and put it on the list :D there's no way it can win against Elden Ring or Breath Of The Wild anyway :P Pretty excited by several of the games on the list though, including Elden Ring and BOTW, and I didn't play it myself but also interested in 13 Sentinels, which was already mentioned several times.

naoxmon

If you're going to do a 100hr type game it should be persona 5 :P Id like to see Judgment but at this point its safe to assume you're not into it enough to want to try the sequel since it didn't get a whole lot better (small improvements here and there but slightly less interesting story)

Calmmo

I would +1 a 13 Sentinels let's play. I will say, voicing an entire visual novel like Phoenix Wright would be hard, but if you're feeling up to doing it, I would definitely enjoy it. Elden Ring is a great first FromSoft game, so if you do decide on doing it you'll be in for a treat.

Daneeka

Too bad Disco Elysium is not an option this time:(. I'm not really sure what I will vote for yet, there are a few games here I would love to see you play...

captain carrot

As someone who has played the Dragon Age series since it released I would love a remaster, but I feel it is unlikely to happen anytime soon

Bookwyrm

Belated congratulations on 75K and many more to come! :) I don't know if I can recommend Mass Effect Andromeda if you're just going to play the main quests. The side quests give more insight to the current ME world too, so it might be hard to ignore them. I'm not a big fan of side quests but ME definitely wouldn't be the same without them. And yes, the summer heat got my head fried but it's cooling down... with heavy rain and flash floods☹

Jin

Really excited to see Elden Ring and/or BOTW on the channel, two of the best video games ever made. All of the games in the poll are awesome, but I also want to highlight 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, it is a criminally underrated game, and I do feel like it is a perfect fit for the channel.

Purbayan Chatterjee

+1 for both 13 Sentinels and Persona. I think Welonz would really enjoy Persona for the story, characters and all the social sim stuff but those games are just so long lol.

Eric H.

Well, Celeste and Omori belong to a specific category for me. The games everybody talk about, and you really want to watch, but they are not on any of your favorite channels. So damn hard to find good letsplayers nowadays, that have genuine interest in what they are playing! So, looking forward to it. I think Zelda is a great fit for the channel too. From what I saw, it has an interesting combat system and puzzles and great story. Also, the knowledge of the previous games is not necessary. As for JFO, the only necessary piece of star wars media is Episode III, as I mentioned before. It's a lot to ask to watch a two hours long movie just to start a game, but this is the only way to understand some crucial parts of the story. Fallen Order is a great game. Hope you will eventually get to it, espacially considering the recent sequel announcement. Any chance we can get Child of Light and Everybody's Gone To The Rapture into this poll or the next one? Thanks for all the work! A great August for you too, with a lot of grass to touch =D

Dave

Not before Alien: Isolation :P

Jonathan B.

Some great games on that list. Some more fun to play than to watch, I’d say. Would love to see 13 Sentinels make the cut. It’s a real treat, and would suit the channel to a T, though I don’t think enough people know about it to win a poll, sadly. Plus, still quietly holding out hope for Persona someday ✨

Stephen Brown

My vote would be for dragons age.

Magiconenl

I'm still hoping in vain for a 13 Sentinels LP but you can't go wrong with Dragon Age.

Jeffrey Hardy Quah

Just remember that if you play Elden Ring or any other Fromsoft game for that matter your channel will never be the same again. If the Danganronpa fanbase got on your nerves you ain't seen nothing yet lol.

Eric H.

I must say, I am very curious about Welonz's take on Resident Evil 1. I was quite impressed with RE2 and 3, but 1 is, for me, where the real Resident Evil is.

pepak

https://www.gamesradar.com/dragon-age-4-reportedly-launching-in-2023-with-no-plans-for-a-remastered-trilogy/ might be the article you remember. It doesn't completely rule out a remaster of DA:O (since Grubb says the "trilogy" isn't being remastered) but I wouldn't expect a standalone remaster either. Looking forward to whatever's next, and that looks like a great poll list....

Christopher Davis

Any chance on adding Resident Evil 7 onto the list? You can't have just one scary game on it.

dezereks

Oh man that poll list is so good, I don't know what I'll vote for! But I'll still shoot my shot and ask to see final fantasy X on there 😆 as much as I'd love to see Elden ring, the time commitment on it is huge and I ended up giving up myself 😆

Glen Jones

Celeste, Phoenix Wright, the Arkham series — very excited for the poll this time around. :) If Elden Ring ends up entering your queue, I'd recommend first skimming some non-spoiler reviews from people who have finished the game. I'd say it's worth your time if you're into the core gameplay loop, world exploration and atmosphere. Where it falls short (imo) is with its simple, apathetic narrative and an egregious amount of repetition (incl. bosses and events). Anyone hoping for the depth and lasting impact of games like The Witcher and Hollow Knight should look elsewhere. Anywho, I'm looking forward to what's next!

Jonathan B.

House of ashes where somewhere in between . I think the main problems for me they are too short and the story suffer . Especially in the first two like the ending is rushed .

Megamusic

Little hope on the other hand .I did really enjoy that . I liked how they told the story and was definitely more of horror atmosphere .

Megamusic

With in regards to DPA games . I really was disappointed with man of maiden . The jump scares where really lame and the story completely was lacking for me . They gave it away at the start and I was waiting for a plot twist that didn't happen

Megamusic

+1 for Sekiro

Erik Nilsson

I think it’s finally time for Omori to come forward. I know the folks voting for it have been waiting patiently for a lull like this, I know I’ll be voting for it.

Krieger

Yay Jedi Fallen Order !

Jack Frost

Let's go elden ring

B11zzard1991

Funny you mention Sleeping Dogs. I don't know why but I thought about it yesterday and thought I should watch your LP of it. Also in your current game selection for the futur poll, I am torn between Celest and Arkham Asylum. I think AH is just a good game but Arkham City is in my top 5 games and I'd hope you play it someday. But these past few year I have been more attracted to indie games and Celest is a masterpiece of an indie game.

Tagyru

Since you mentioned Elden Ring, and you Enjoyed SIFU. You should really try out Sekiro!

Wanafu567

omg i gasped so loudly when I saw Ace attorney in the poll!!!!!! I'd LOVE to see you play it, the story and mysteries will be a lot less daunting than AINI so it'd be a good change of pace haha! Also, definitely go for something you want to play for the 100+ parts serie, you'll be the one playing it after all!

Mecchi

Take care of yourself Welonz, even over here in the UK the weather has been genuinely unbearable, funny that a trip to Spain over the summer actually felt cooler 😂 Perhaps not one for the channel, but since you mentioned Elden Ring it’d be cool to get your thoughts on Sekiro one day. It’s way more narrative focused than the other From games and with the focus on Japan and it’s history - it really seems up your alley ^^

Lord Atrexia

Yeahhh, the heat has turned off my brain too, so you are very valid! XD I do have a new game recc for you though! If you have been wanting to play a new Immersive Sim game lately, I can reccomend Ctrl Alt Ego, a game of that genre where you play as a disembodied consciousness that travels and controls multiple robot bodies to serve your goals: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1571940/Ctrl_Alt_Ego/ It's apparently a quite big game too, and there is deffo quite a bit of story just in the demo I played, so maybe you will like it too! :D
