March 2022 Channel Update – No Easts Allowed

Hi all,

Hope your March has been going great!

This month has been more a breather compared February, but still full of toooons of really interesting games coming out. I only wish there were enough hours in a day to check them all out…!!

TL;DR

Games Finished Since Last Update

Hollow Knight (62 parts): Finally wrapped up this behemoth of a game! I don’t think games with a million bosses is normally my thing, but Hollow Knight made it all work with the exploration and cryptic lore drip-feed. Aside from the ending boss rush bits I had a really great time with this one. Patreon vote winners have (unsurprisingly, I suppose!) always been fantastic experiences – thanks again to everyone who voted for this! Now I also join the Silksong waiting room...

I also took a first look at:

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy of Origin: Just like its chaotic reveal trailer, it’s fun, but in a B movie, don’t-take-it-seriously sorta way.  To me the gameplay is the usual FF hack-n-slash, but I’ve seen some say it’s “Soulslike” – I don’t really know what this means lol – so it seems like it’s decent enough to push the buttons for some people.

Progress on Current Stuff

Horizon Forbidden West: I think I’m roughly 30-40% through at the moment. I found a good rhythm with daily videos, although I’d still really like to push it up a bit more like I mentioned last update… it’s a work in progress!

Weird West: A top-down indie immersive sim set in the Wild West but with occult stuff by the co-creators of Prey/Dishonored. Aside from the non-first-person POV, it feels very immersive simmy with the different ways to solve a problem, the world responding to your actions, etc.

TBH I’m a little hesitant about this one as a full series b/c it looks like it’s fairly lengthy and has limited general appeal, but I’m enjoying it a ton and once in a while I do just wanna play something without thinking about opportunity cost blahblahblah. Hope you enjoy it as well!

Upcoming Stuff

The two West games’ll be here for a while, but I don’t envision it being all that there’ll be: soon I hope to check out TUNIC which came out earlier this month and got favourable reviews.

Looking further ahead into the year, I don’t see any longer, 40+ hour games coming out (fill me in if you think I’m overlooking anything), so after Horizon I’m thinking it would be a great time to get back to some polls, older classics, all that good stuff. (e.g. I wanna get back to Mass Effect Andromeda to complete the set, and I’m also about to give up on waiting for Dragon Age remasters and just jump in, all those unplayed Resident Evils, OMORI………...)

So many games, so little time… A positive interpretation is that we’re probably living in some kind of golden age of gaming with how accessible and competitive games are for our attention 🍷

Feel free to let me know any comments/thoughts you have! Take care, and see you next month!

Comments

Elden Ring, Resident Evil 7/8? -- would be great to see you playing those :)

ahmmu18

Just ocurred to me. If you aren't sick of the west yet, there's Fallout New Vegas 😜

Mads

More TUNIC when!? Loving your content and looking forward to all your vids!

lasagnaman

I've got nothing concrete yet but with no new longer games on the horizon, I think a longer one would be nice!

Materwelonz

Ooo it's almost poll time is it? Are we going long games or short games this time?

Mads

Yes, I believe I had it on a poll before too! It's on my "eventual" list!

Materwelonz

Honestly I don't usually have that big of an inclination! As long as it's a "good" game that's good enough for me lol

Materwelonz

I watched the first look of Weird West, but I'm sure the viewing numbers have plummeted after that partly because (as others have said) people want to avoid spoilers before we can access it. Hope you keep pursuing your passion for immersive sims! These are my favorite to play alongside the videos, to see someone else's approach to the same problems

Daniel Hanley

Am I dreaming ? Welonz is going back to the Evil Residences ? :D

Captain Kashup

Have you heard of Child of Light? It's relaxing and has a great story.

Dave

Yess, I still have this on my mind!

Materwelonz

I know it’s been said on here before, but I recently started playing Disco Elysium and it truly is something special. Would love to see a play through at some point.

Jacob Ward

What kind of games are you in the mood for though?

Vivi Cheung

Weird West looks really great. The only reason I (and possibly others?) haven't been watching is because it has yet to release and I'd like to experience it for myself first. Thought I'd be able to wrap up Elden Ring by the time Weird West launches, but I swear the map keeps expanding and it seemingly never ends. 😅 Hope you've had a good March! Thanks for the vids.

Weird West sold me on the premise so hard. An occult western? Absolutely amazing. Since you enjoy it, maybe take it as a break after the gauntlet that was Hollow Knight? I get the worry about how interested people are, but I know that I and a good amount of people will be watching every episode

Daniel Larsson

Personally I spent the last week playing Tunic, and very much enjoyed it. It is very much like a game you previously enjoyed on your channel, and hits similar highs. So worth trying. I also played A Memoir Blue (Annapurna) on Game Pass, which was very good. It is only 60-90 minutes at a maximum. I have seen it called the gaming version of a Pixar/Disney short animation.

Thomas Mc

Wait ... Wasn't February update a week ago ...

Megamusic

Tunic is amazing!

Tobias V. Langhoff

I hope you're able to continue with weird west, I love being able to watch you play the games not everyone can get around to because of all of the big mainstream games happening right now. Also, I agree that I would absolutely LOVE to see you play dragon age when you have time for it, it's one of my all time favorite series

Jennifer Barrowman

I will definitely come back for that Weird West playthrough once i played it myself, very excited for the game.

Eric H.

I'd love to watch you play TUNIC. It seems like a nice little game

Denis K.

I deffo reccomend FAR: Lone Sails and it's more recent sequel, if you are ever in the mood for a shorter and more relaxing game. ^w^

Calliope Rannis

Have you ever played Earthbound/Mother 3? I was thinking the other day about how it'd be cool to see more people play the classic RPGs that inspired the likes of today's Deltarunes, although knowing you they may already be well under your belt lol

Julia (Blackhole)

Oh wow, that just went straight over my head then haha!! Will check it out for sure!

eramocort

I played it when it came out :D http://bit.ly/Welonz_ImpostorFactory edit: looks like links don't work but you can find it on the channel for sure!

Materwelonz

I think this is just a constant and familiar struggle with all content creation: what you wanna do is not always going to align with what the majority is interested in!

Materwelonz

Do you have Impostor Factory on your radar? The latest game from Freebird Games! Just a couple hours long. Considering you played Finding Paradise some time ago... ;)

eramocort

I'd love to see you play Dragon Age, one of my all time favourites!

Schl3cki

I hope you do Tunic, it's amazing!!

Evan!!

I've definitely been recommended this before and have it noted down! It sounds good for a bit of relaxation :D

Materwelonz

I hope you stick with Weird West! I'd like to play it myself before I watch you play, but if you're enjoying it, I'd hate for you stop just because of limited appeal (though I get the reasoning).

daggercat

Would you consider playing 'Chicory: A Colorful Tale'? It'll be PicassoWelonz all day everyday!

Shweta Philip

To complete the Wests there's also still West of Loathing :D
