February 2022 Channel Update – The Forbidden West

Hey all,

Hope you are well!

Things are quite hectic over here both IRL and on the channel so I will try to make this quick! I thought this month was gonna be manageable until Horizon came out, but SIFU ended up being a really big time commitment 💀 Anyway, we’re over that hump now so hopefully things will smooth out.

TL;DR

Games Finished Since Last Update

Not For Broadcast 1.0 (11 parts):  A hectic propaganda newsroom simulator –fascinating overall as it basically carved out its own genre with the simulator gameplay + watching video clips. The narrative goes from lighthearted and funny to serious and depressing but is engaging throughout - I enjoyed it lots and am definitely going to keep an eye on what these devs come up with next.

SIFU (9 parts): A martial arts combat game where, with the help of a mystical pendant, we pursue our father’s killers to achieve vengeance. The star of the game is the combat system but there’s still enough lore to keep you interested. It feels like the game pulled a bit of a switcharoo since the preview I tried because it’s H A R D……. but we got through the whole game in the end!! It was very satisfying to see how much I improved since the beginning.

I also took a first look at:

Hidden Deep: Currently in early access, an atmospheric side-scrolling cave explorer where we’re tasked to look for missing researchers in an underwater mining and research facility. Bit of a spooky one with monsters prowling about. The overall gameplay idea is fun although a lot still needs ironing out (e.g. art/assets/HUD are all very tiny, and the numerous controls are a handful to learn).

Tinykin demo: A Pikmin and Paper Mario-inspired collectathon platformer where we’re an alien archaeologist from outer space who somehow got shrunken down and trapped in a house on Earth. It has a really interesting artstyle blending 3D environments with 2D character, and the fun whimsical tone also reminds me of a bit of stuff like Psychonauts.

Progress on Current Stuff

Hollow Knight: I’m about 95% through the whole thing with some boss battles left…!

Horizon Forbidden West: Very excited to come back to Horizon!! I watched a recap video and starting bawling when I remembered Elisabet in the first game hahahah. I got a bit of a late start with all the SIFU stuff but this should be readily underway now!

Upcoming Stuff

I expect Hollow Knight to wrap up fairly soon, and then afterwards I feel like I want to try changing things up where I go faster on Horizon instead of handling more multiple games. Theoretically this would allow me to stay more focused & involved in the story and also finish faster (I remember when I played Horizon 1 I spent so long on side quests I had forgotten major characters midway through the story lol). Not sure how this will be in practice – will see how it goes!

I’m also keeping casual tabs on a few things in March:

This obviously goes against the whole focusing more on 1 game thing, but I’ll see if I can balance things out.

Also: this isn’t a particular update that belongs anywhere, but after playing Hollow Knight and SIFU I feel like I’m conceptually more open to the idea of Soulsborne games sometime down the line…. but maybe after I rest with some “easier” games first!!

Take care, and keep on gaming! 🎮

I'll make a note of it for the next time we have a poll (feel free to bring it up again then too!)

Hey Welonz! I know you get recommendations ALL THE TIME, but I figure I'll throw my hat in the ring, and see if we can get Final Fantasy X HD remaster in the polls? It would defs fall in the longer category at 50 hours for the main storyline, but it's one of the shining stars of the FF series, so if there's one to consider for yourself, I hope you'll consider that one!

LETS GOOOO

FaxTM

I totally get that! I don't really enjoy wasting time on runbacks & boss fights either. I liked the cryptic lore dripfeed a lot though and that kept me going!

Materwelonz

Sifu was a great recommendation, and now Weird West is definitely on my radar. If you're looking for another shorter, sub-10hr filler game with a beautiful aesthetic and serviceable story, I'd recommend Ghostrunner. It's a first-person parkour game, not a brawler, but for me it had the same intense-frustration-followed-by-cartharsis feel that Sifu evoked once you master the rhythm. And fans really appreciate your rapid progress through an incredibly challenging game!

Daniel Hanley

Mega respect for what you've accomplished with Sifu and Hollow Knight. Genuinely inspiring, and entertaining as always. I'm very interested in what NotGames has in store as well. NFB was a real hidden gem to me. Loved the look at Tinykin too. Seems like it might be a good, light-hearted "bug" game to decompress with after Hollow Knight. I got a late start with Forbidden West myself. Caught some kind of stomach virus or something that totally wrecked my weekend. Things are looking up though and I hope to get a lot of playtime this week. I'm looking forward to your videos about as much as playing it myself, and that's saying a lot!

Blue72

I need to check out stranger in paradise. It looks dumb and hilarious.

Chris Bradshaw

If you hated the backseat gaming and comment sections for Hollow Knight imagine it 100 times worse for Souls lol.

Eric H.

I'm proud of how far you came. But do take care of yourself xD. a little.

Rik Thunder

I'm so torn about Stranger of Paradise, but looking at the newest trailer It can turn out to be a great game. Maybe at least worth a first look? Also really hyped to watch you play Forbidden West, won't be able to do it myself.

Hans Olav

You could 100% do the souls games!

Erik Nilsson

Only some of the best shows/movies ever, were as inspiring to me as your SIFU playthru. In mere month, you went from soulsborne allergic, to John Wick: it says so much good about what could the viewer do in that time.

Khandov Arbalest

Hollow Knight was available on Gamepass, so I thought I'd give it a go...it's too hard for me lol, I'm not sure I have the patience to keeping fighting the bosses and keep backtracking after dying, though I understand that's the appeal for a lot of people. In that regard, props to you for sticking with the game! Since I doubt I'll be finishing the game myself, I'll have to see about watching your playthrough. Take care!

Brad Jung

Yeah, I deffo don't mind you taking the time to focus only on Forbidden West for a bit! Though, that said, I can *strongly* reccomend FAR: Lone Sails, and the sequel seems to be just as good too! :D

Calliope Rannis

Make sure you take care of yourself Welonz, burning the candle at both ends is super easy - but you gotta make sure you’re doing okay too ^^ Really looking forward to more of Horizon, the original was one of my favourite games last gen & it’s starting out really strong 🙏

Lord Atrexia

After Hollow Knight and SIFU, you deserve that "focus on only one game" rest, Welonz.
