The Plan for 2024
Added 2023-12-31 17:05:34 +0000 UTCHi everyone, 2024 is almost here (and for some people, it already is). I hope everyone had a great 2023! So where's Engine Simulator currently at and what's the plan for 2024?
The Prototype
The Engine Simulator prototype which most of you have downloaded already, has achieved its goal. The new fluid simulation runs on modern computing hardware and it works well. Next, we'll take this simulation and put it into a 3D interface that allows graphical engine editing, but first...
Steam Engine Simulator: what's going on with that and what does it have to do with ES3D?
A Steam Engine Simulator DLC has been in development for some time. The original intention was to have this developed by a third-party developer so that I could focus my time on Engine Simulator. Unfortunately, this didn't work out as expected and it's clear that to deliver the best possible product, I will need to complete the project myself.
The effort that goes into this DLC is all directly transferable to ES3D since all my projects share a common codebase. The multithreading and performance improvements made to SES as well as the interface controls (text, buttons, etc) will be directly transferable to the ES3D interface.
The ES3D Interface
The 3D interface which forms the core of Engine Simulator will begin to take shape in January. The basic framework of this application exists already which I've demonstrated on my YouTube channel. All it needs is the simulation elements from the prototype and the interface components I've been working on in Steam Engine Simulator.
ES2D
As much as humanly possible, I'm trying to release things incrementally so you guys can directly observe and experience progress on the project. I've thought about bridging the gap between ES2D and ES3D by backporting some of the improvements to ES2D. This will take some development effort though so you guys can decide.
Thanks for the continued support everyone!
Comments
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the development of ES3D and where it goes. I still like using ES2D but it's legacy at this point, I don't think it really needs much added to it.
2024-01-16 21:28:45 +0000 UTCFor me, the one thing that kinda of holds me stuck is that I still love using ES2D as an audio export for engine sounds with converting vehicles from Automation to Beamng. An enhancement to the sounds made in that, as well as any potential for making on/off load rpm sound exports, would entice me to vote for development enhancements on ES2D. Alternatively, letting ES3D cook might be better for the long run.

2024-01-03 01:01:40 +0000 UTCES2D was a great starting point and if I’m honest, it served its purpose as a tech demo. But ES3D is the thing we all can’t wait to use, and that’s why I think 3D deserves it more, as it’s also still very basic and needs much more work to be done with. But if you think it’s possible if you can go ahead and make some quick hotfixes to es2D, I think even non paying people deserve some updates as well

2024-01-01 04:08:37 +0000 UTC3D is all im waiting for, the 2D version has long gone stale and boring for me

2023-12-31 20:13:30 +0000 UTCI Think ES2D should still be improved But ES3D or SES should be prioritized

2023-12-31 19:31:13 +0000 UTCReally I want it all but I see the most potential in the 3D version. Maybe further down the road we could still go back and improve the 2D version? It’s still extremely valuable
