0076 — pt. 7, Ray and Antonyne Mega-Update

In a move designed for the real Heads, I’ve hopped over to a more suitable format for this week's installment. Sometimes the fellows just have so much to say that speech bubbles are the wrong tool to pull off the pegboard.

If you enjoy this kind of wall-breaking, rule-destroying update, you will enjoy The Great Outdoor Fight storyline (look for it in the drop-down menu at achewood.com, and note all the related blogs below each installment).

You'll also enjoy the longer-form material in the In-Universe and Author's tiers -- take them for a spin for a month, I promise you won't regret it! Nearly 150 pieces are ready for you to unlock, for less than the price of a sandwich!

"You got to have boundaries in important relationships, and that includes your relationship with reality." is mine from this one

wink

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

it gets us all in the end

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

I was thinking the same, kinda Thomas Sankara vibes 👀

Miiiike Walker

Never mind, forget I said anything

RB's circumstances may leave him with a certain immunity to Mexican Magical Realism. or maybe it would make him even more susceptible to it, like that dude you know who has always been pretty much acceptable, but then you find out he doesn't believe in the moon landing and now his his hobby of collecting old school monster movies on blu ray doesn't seem as innocuous anymore.

And this is when I realize that I've assumed, for years, that it's just Antoine.

Lynsey McCoskey

Who among us has not enjoyed a sudden windfall, only to have it snatched away by the indecency people?

Chris Lamb

There aren't a lot of ladybug garment decorations in Achewood. The connection is fair game.

Chris Onstad

I was mistaken, but it still evoked a mental connection. Layers have always been a part of this.

Hunter

It is possible Google Image Search returned the same bug in 2024 as in...2006 or whenever the first bug was needed. But it was not copied from that original strip. Good callback, I had forgotten about that.

Chris Onstad

Is that the same bug from 'so what if a tit is food? I ain't buggin''

Hunter

Showering with a hat on is a golden detail that I missed until this comment, thank you

Bungus Bronbo

Also, "came-with-the-frame" as an insult is gold, or even some metal beyond gold, like bismuth.

Oppido

Fittingly, one of the only other Achewood installments I can recall that was basically a long volley of dialogue with a handful of images was the 12/18/06 strip where we first learned the real depths of Antonyne's backstory.

Oppido

He looks like he was in Manic Street Preachers.

Daniel Grieff

The hat implies he's been doing some Reading

kdusjjdhxksj

Don't you tell Chris Onstad of all people what to do with the form

kdusjjdhxksj

It is free from its own perspective, but lost to those on the ground

kdusjjdhxksj

Been a long time since I smoked a cig in the shower. It's good. I never tried it with a hat on

A balloon without a string is shot down by the air national guard

GruntyGinMan

Gosh what a treat!

trashdo

"...a requirement of, but strong case against, survival." Well, there's yet another in the long string of "Phrases and sentences from Achewood that I am no longer the same after reading". (One wonders if childbirth meets the same description.)

John Robinson

I do! I DO enjoy the Great Outdoor Fight! Enough that a decade back I wrote a short play/long poem inspired by it. Loved the mega-update, that's some good intergenerational Smuckles drama.

Dan Gibbins

[edit] Well, shit- I had a great comment after reading the panel (involving clandestine gay party trips to Cuba) that was immediate obviated when I read the pdf. The perils of showing one’s ass too soon, I suppose…

Jay Williams

Here they come. Here come the bastards

Ryan Boyle

*Point of order, is Antonyne's name pronounced ant-oh-nine ? Apologies if this has been clarified before..

My takeaway: Cognitive flexibility is key, change is inevitable, and Beef has a lil bit of self-esteem? Or is his shirt ironic? Also continue to love the turns of phrase.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

J Hardy Carroll

It did make me go reread it

yung skittles

Shit. Is a balloon without a string free, or is it lost? These fellas are doing philosophy.

Shepton

Les is more!

Oh hey, I just realized (while scrolling through the GOF), if a blog updated on a different day than a comic was posted, the blog wouldn't show up on the Achewood site. Like, because there was a comic on 1/27/2006 and the next update was on 1/31/2006, Phillipe's "Good Communism Today!" blog post on 1/30/2006 doesn't show up under a comic. Not exactly a problem, just some blog posts might be missed.

Bungus Bronbo

Beef's drip in this strip is extremely respectable

Lionstooth

Roast Beef nooooooo ONSTAD DON'T YOU HURT HIM his shirt is pretty tite

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

I'm tickled by the notion that anyone currently subscribed to the Achewood patreon hasn't already read the GOF to the point of memorization

Bungus Bronbo

Essays could be written about how the Smuckles curse manifested itself in the panoply of family members we've seen

The B'taint is my new term for the gooch
