Here you go: Picture this. It's Sunday, May 10th, 2020. Mother's Day. It's been almost 2 years since your oldest son died from an opioid addiction. Ever since, you've had to take a handful of your own pills every morning just to get through the day. Pills that are prescribed by the same doctor that your son used to see. You still miss him but at least you don't get nervous anymore. Except, of course, when your meds are running on empty. After dragging yourself out of bed, you drive your family to the local mega church and circle the parking structure for what seems like hours. Service is already in session by the time you get inside. An usher passes you the plate and a judgmental stare. Your budget is tight but you'd better pay the tithe. God needs your paycheck more than you do for some reason. On the way home, you turn on the radio to catch up on political news while the kids play with their iPads in the backseat. You tell yourself that you can't wait for election day in November. When we will all stand in line again to cast our votes to finally fix this broken nation. The same determination you've felt about every election for the past 30 years. But maybe this time will be different. Maybe everything is about to change. But you know, in one of those rare occasions when you're being honest with yourself, that it's probably already too late. You look at your kids in the rearview mirror. At what age do you wish them good luck with the mess we've left for them? Everything is so fragile. Society hangs on by a string. Just yesterday we were jousting for toilet paper while the politicians tallied their gains from the stocks they sold. You know the game is rigged against you. That sinking feeling in your stomach grows heavier when you remember that you have to go to work tomorrow. Another day at the office for another dollar that you already spent months ago. And you realize that you'll have to do this forever. Until the bones in your knees grind together and your spine no longer straightens out. You realize you'll spend your whole life generating wealth for someone else and you'll die with nothing to show for it even though you played by all the rules. You are nothing more than a human commodity. A tax write-off. A cog in the machine. You're the grease upon the wheels. But hey. At least your favorite podcast is coming back.
