After hearing this again and again, it should be very evident that this is the unfortunate but totally predictable result of the estate tax and income tax reductions begun under Reagan which continues today . It creates dynasties with nepotism producing unaccountable heirs having no socially redeemable value taking over businesses they had no part in building and then bleeding them with their selfish greed.we really have got to get back to a truly meritocracy and recognize the horrors of the oligarchy which the conservative and ultra rich ( often the same ) continue to trick with their money the uneducated and people too busy making a livable wage to have time for critical thinking, into falling for their lies and rhetoric.

I just listened to this today and it had in tears. I cannot imagine ever forgetting this rotten bastard.

Serena DeNardo

The son was probably the golden child in the family. Probably also why he became like that in the first place.

RPGFan

Second time listening to this and it is one of the hardest to go through, along with the nestle formula one. I can't believe what some people would do.

Since I’m a creeper and I live in Tulsa by where Doug used to live...I’m going to find and drive be the house to sightsee later today. Haha.

Stephanie

SAME!

Nikita T. Mitchell

It really did work out that way. It was great to see :-)

I actually lived through this: I drove truck over the road in my early 20s, and remember when this went down. There was a big online message board for drivers, and when the news came out everyone got together and tried to get those guys home. I was 350 miles from home, heading in, and I put out the word I'd pick up a guy... but everyone who needed a ride had gotten one by then. It was a really neat thing to see, something good coming out of something terrible... but it certainly gave me some trust issues. From then on, I never let my truck get below a half tank...

He did mention the mother adored him, i think his words where something like " His mother's pride and joy"

Dan

Perhaps she was the first choice, but declined. That’s what’d I’d like to hope, at least. Putting myself in her shoes, I’d take the chair on the proviso Doug be removed from his position. I get the feeling mother dear would never allow that to happen.

Sarah

This one broke me. My brother is a long haul truck driver in Australia; he drives “road trains” across the desert from the west coast to the east and back again. I thought about how he would fair if he received the same news...in the middle of the desert. There’s nothing out there, it would quite literally kill him. But hearing how the other companies banded together to help their fellow drivers, faith in humanity partially restored. I will never understand how people can function with a complete lack of compassion, it’s unfathomable to me.

Sarah

What we don't know is how the mother viewed Doug as a child, even if he was a disaster all throughout his life, she might have thought he was the best thing on the planet. It's sad that we can see why it should have been given to the daughter, but instead if run to the ground by a person who was never fit to run it in the first place.

Courtney Sit

Jim didn't put him in charge his wife did :(

Nicole Padilla

This story is so sad but also very frustrating. Why the hell would Jim put his son in charge??! His attitude towards working for what you want and his spending habits should’ve been a pretty obvious indicator that he’d run the company into the ground. Their daughter clearly would’ve been a better choice. I’m going to go ahead and assume Doug was chosen because they wanted to believe so badly that he’d smarten up with the new responsibilities of running a business. What a shame

nerdy birdie

That’s what I was wondering too.

nerdy birdie

Particularly the sarcasm in this episode. I found myself laughing out loud with no one around! It was so spot on for this story. I'm loving it!

Kathie Stuart

Totally agreed. It makes this show even better, and I didn't know that was possible.

PrincessLeppard

Agreed. I live for his sarcasm 😂

Sarah Gallagher

You've been steadily increasing the sarcasm over the seasons and you know what? I approve!
