The Buddha's Story by Chris Matheson – 201118 – I really needed this book now. Chris’ father is the Twilight Zone guy and Chris wrote all the Bill and Ted movies. He’s a great guy. He’s been on PSS. He’s written a few of these religious books. He went through the Bible, and the Book or Mormon, and the Koran, and Scientology and he reads and underlines what he thinks is funny and then writes books from the POV of the lead religious character. He also puts in all his references, so you know he’s not making things up. I had some of the other books and they’re really fun. God is an insecure, mercurial, petty asshole and nothing is made up, but his tone really gets me laughing and makes it clear what the real story is. So, the god and jesus stuff was all obvious to me and I just laughed, but this one I needed. I’ve been reading a lot of Buddhist stuff, and because of my meditation and vegan shit, kind of doing a lot of nodding along. Chris really rips it open. I need to laugh at Buddhism and Chris delivered. Buddha, what a dick. It was nice to see that POV. I still like mindfulness and I think there’s some wisdom there, but I was going down a stupid road, and Chris helped me see that. It’s a funny book that dummied me up a little.

I smiled, bemused. “I tell you that life is pain and love is a trap and that the only worthy goal is death, and you find these ideas negative?”
