He didnt want to franchise it, he didnt even want a sequel because he felt like the first one ended perfectly. He knew a sequel meant it was only going to be made just for profit and he just wanted to move on. The only reason why he agreed to do it was because the studio guaranteed to him having rare complete creative control over the entire movie. So he took it ran with it and parodied the first movie and made satire of the entire entertainment industry.
