Heated Rivalry - 1x3 "Hunter" Full Reaction

YES HI FROM THE STUCKY TRENCHES. It's sooooo weird! I will have more to say on this when you finish. (hi, I have been watching your youtube 911 videos and came here when I heard you were doing heated rivalry because I found you to be very thoughtful with 911). I was right where you are with the pacing and the time skips on my first watch as well. There is a specific place where it clicked for me that this pacing is actually very deliberate and pretty brilliant for the storytelling, and I felt like I suddenly understood all the previous episodes and now I love them all. It's like one of those art videos where it looks like the artist is drawing random lines and then they turn it 90 degrees and it's a very detailed portrait or something. I'm so curious to see if you find the same new perspective I did when you get to that point. Again, really really enjoying all your "can't get over this being Steve Rogers' moments. And you're right, Scott is very Steve, but Kip's not very Bucky. I also read the original fanfiction back in the day and I remember it being true in that original as well. (I think that was true of a lot of stucky modern AUs - it's harder to get a good characterization of Bucky when you pluck him out of the context of the canon. Steve for whatever reason is easier transplant.)

(but yes, I would LOVE to have seen this play out as a 24 episode season instead of 6...)

On the pacing front, I remember when you were getting used to the weird pacing that was in Agents of Shield... where the first couple of seasons they were blowing through about a movie and a half of content with each episode. Giving the guys here literal years where there is almost no content is rough, but if you remember after about 2006, Russia was being alarmingly repressive about any relationships that weren't 100% hetero. Layer on top the ages and experience level of the guys, the fact that they are in a hypermasculine sports machine, with one dealing with not being able to read the room very well because of autism and it seems pretty realistic (to me) they are both running in full fear mode, and moving (and not moving) more cautiously than a traditional trope might want them to... but it actually fits pretty well with the bigger world where this would have been taking place, IMHO.

They were actually doing team europe vs team america. East vs West would have put Shane and Ilya on the same team I believe.

I loved the first two episodes, but this is when I really got obsessed with the show. I'm a big Skip girly (gn). Also got into Francois Arnaud XD Shane and Hunter only were on the same team for the All-Star-Game. In the normal season Shane has always played in Montreal and Scott in New York. And in the olympics Shane is on team canada, while Scott and Carter (which is the 'Sam' guy) are on team usa. "He deserves sunshine ... and so do you" - always hits me. Loved the pointing out of Stucky/Captain America easter egg-y stuff. I'm still waiting for a destiel fic to be turned mainstream show/movie XD I gotta say I love love looooove the books. But personally I think the show elevates them. Like for once I'd say the show is better than the books. But then I always try to consume adaptions and their original work as two entirely different things. I think this story (the Scott and Kip story) being the first book kinda is a big reason for why the Ilya and Shane story/ second book is set up the way it is. I feel like they're the antithesis to eachother in a way. Maybe I'll get into this a bit more at the end of the season, in case it would be spoilery.

Teams wise, Scott is on the New York Admirals, Shane is on the Montreal Metros (or Voyageurs in the book), the time they were on the same team that you're thinking of was outside of usual game play so they were doing an East vs West thing (hence Ilya being on the other team - this was flagged at the press conference but easy to miss) and then at the Olympics in Sochi, Scott is on the American team and Shane is on the Canadian team, so they were friendly rivals.
