Never Ending Story

Catching up on the classic feel good childrens cinema of the 80s

Comments

I know this is like a year a half a late, lol, but as an 80's kid, the boobs were not big deal to anyone. First, 80's parents rarely paid attention to what the kids were into. Second, most 80's kids were not conditioned to sexualize boobs yet. Third, boobs on statues were mostly overlooked (in the sense that people didn't openly discuss it) by most people because it was still considered predominately as artistic and the natural female form. Fourth, realize we were coming out of the 'free love' years and explosions of nudist clubs. Although not remotely as true as people thought, many assumed that kids had seen one or more of their parents nude at one point or another and if the parent doesn't overreact when that happens, then the child, it was assumed, doesn't develop a negative (forbidden) conditioner to that occurrence. And lastly, it was unthinkable by most adults that anything targeted at kids, at the time, was intentionally sexualized or designed to condition them sexually. Not saying it was right, just saying that, at the time, it was very very low on anyone's concerns, lol. Oh, and historically, in art about mythological creatures, female sphinxes are depicted with bare exposed breasts with nipples but not until the Renaissance, 16th to 18th centuries.

This movie traumatized me and my child brain when Artax died. I was not prepared for that! BUT I was still really intrigued by the film and its amazing artwork. A true masterpiece! I fight anyone who disagrees that this movie is not good. Also, there is a band called Atreyu that got their name from this film. Oh, and Gmork terrified me and so began my fear of wolves.

The name of the mother being left open is very deliberate. The conclusion of the plot is the culmination of the breaking down of barriers between the meta-level and the object-level in the story - not just between the world of Bastian and the world of Fantasia, but also between the world of the viewer/reader, that of Bastian, and that of Fantasia. First, Atreyu hears Bastian's voice in Fantasia - then it becomes clear that it is *seemingly* Bastian who has to give a new name to the Childlike Empress. But then, at the very end of the story - the world opens up once more. The Childlike Empress tells not just of Bastian, but of the viewer/reader who is following Bastian's story just like Bastian was following Atreyu's story. It's a brilliant narrative device to draw the viewer/reader in - and consequently, in the end it is not Bastian who has to give a name to the Childlike Empress - it is you as the viewer/reader. I find it quite touching as well: Bastian's father can only deal with the loss of his wife by soldiering on - and impresses this upon his son, who is also losing faith in himself, and losing his hopes and dreams. His mother's name is the symbol for his connection to his interior emotional world - his fears, his hopes, his dreams... which he feels he has to suppress to make it through. Speaking her name means allowing himself to feel all that... which is why it is so hard for him. Hence, when we as the viewer/reader take the place of Bastian at the end of the story and are called upon to give a name to the Childlike Empress, it is also reminding us to dare to hope and dream.

Gonna have to stay away from saying "Feel good movie" for a while, I don't think either of them will believe Chad anymore when he says that before recording.

Oh man, you're gonna love Stranger Things Season 3 even more after having seen this. I mean, it's just a small part, but you get to sing along in a part when some serious shit is going down too.
