Peaky Blinders 1x2

Comments

I've only seen the first season of this show, so I'm restarting it with you guys. I'm also fascinated by life in this time period. It sort of reminds me of Boardwalk Empire, which covers gang stuff during Prohibition in America. Both shows are visually stunning and look so authentic, its almost like they went back in time and filmed it.

one historical point; after the Russian revolution in 1917, most governments in Europe feared a similar revolt by their workers, so the communist and anarchist movements were dealt with harshly in England and in other countries. it was know as the "1st red scare" In this show they talk a lot about mass-strikes, which were very common in those times-- as communist agitators often organized unions and led strikes against the industrialists. post WW-1 years were chaotic times indeed !!!

on weekdays we record in the evenings and then by the time it's uploaded and processed (both take forever) it ends up being late.

Gypsies have gone by many names, as they originally came from the Punjab region of India and begun to migrate due to an invasion from Persia/Iran. The name Gypsy comes from their mistaken origin of Egypt, they also have other names like Tsigani or Cigani which originally mean "untouchables" which has mostly disappeared as the modern meaning, as the word now just refers to the "Roma" people. In England the word Gypsy doesn't just refer to the Roma, it also refers to all types of "Traveling people" likely being associated due to the similar culture, but it's used more as a shorthand to describe a certain type of nomadic culture that at least in England is shared by multiple groups, though in other countries is probably more specific to the Roma. Personally I had always thought of it as a way of referring to a certain group of Irish people (Irish Travellers) at least until I had looked into it after watching this show and found out it is mostly used in other countries to refer to the Roma.

Romanichals (Gypsies in England) still face fairly widespread bigotry, as do Roma people elsewhere. The Roma people were one of the main targets of the Nazi holocaust alongside the Jewish people. They have been frequent targets of riots and pogroms throughout Europe. Many European nations today still target Roma people through legislation with efforts to deport, marginalise, or isolate them. The persecution is a significant reason why they were forced into a nomadic lifestyle.
