My microphones & I

This is my extremely neatly arranged storage space. Most microphones I have are sent to me for free by different microphone manufacturers, which is a big luxury. I want to get better at showing them off in videos, sometimes I feel like I just took them from them and never use them lol. They're quite expensive and nice mics.

I'm not trying to brag/flex here since I didn't even pay, but I thought it might be interesting for ya to know what I got here.

To the left is the Manley Ref C (About $3000). I love this microphone on my voice. I has  a lot of top end, and low of bottom end, and not that much of the harsher midrange that my voice sometimes gets if I sing loud. It's a tube microphone which creates a certain type of subtle distorsion and character which many find pleasing, including me.

The middle mic (grey one) is the Lauten Audio Eden (about $3300). It's the newest one of the bunch, I haven't used it a lot yet but it has rave reviews so I can't wait. It has a few different "modes" so it can sound in multiple ways. It's very heavy and feels like it's great quality. I use a Lauten audio mic as my new talking mic in videos (LS208, about $550).

To the right we have my trusted SM7b (about $360), my old talking mic. It's alright but I don't really like it on my voice.

Not in this pic, but on my mic stand right now I have the Lewitt LCT-1040 (about $3500). Similarily to the Eden, it has different modes and amazing build quality. The Lewitt people are great and I want to travel to see their studios in Vienna soon. https://www.lewitt-audio.com/microphones/lct-recording/lct-1040

I don't know if this was any interesting to you guys, just thought I'd share some of my day to day with yall! These expensive mics might seem like luxury items, and they are. I would never buy all these if they weren't sent to me (but perhaps one). But having them is great and adds that extra 10% of quality when I succeed in using them right.

Have an amazing weekend!

I have the same questions! I feel like I don't know what to listen for

emy

Not a flex at all. In fact, it would be really cool if you did a video on your thoughts about the mics once youโ€™ve given them a proper chance so weโ€™d be able to know which mics are worth the money ๐Ÿ˜Š If nothing else, itโ€™s always fun watching you geek out!

Jen ๐Ÿฆ™

I was just thinking I would love to know more about the products you use. Weโ€™re looking for new (better) voice plugins that we can use real time while performing. Any good ones you can recommend?

Calize

It is very interesting. Also super interesting that you dont like the sm7b on your voice and like everybody hypes it up so much. I also have never heared of Lewitt and was super surprised that we have such an awesome microphone manufacturer in our country. Would love to hear more about that mic ๐Ÿฅณ

Mari

@loonylovesgood Gosh yes, Monk-me is triggered af. Let's go over and organize this mess :D

Luna

I really appreciate how you describe nerdy things like this for noobs, without taking this knowledge for granted. It makes me feel involved without the pressure of having to be on your level (if this makes sense). I love that โ™ฅ I started years ago with a Rรธde NT1-A for first tries. Then I recorded my singing and realized that it sounds awful unless I'm able to use any software. :D Now it waits in patience for my comeback... :D

Luna

Joel, do you remember when you made a video on microphone quality? This was a nice short and sweet version. No one is surprised, but it is rather wonderful that these manufacturers seek your professional opinion. Maybe they could sponsor or could do a commercial with them? Just wondering. Thank you for sharing, please take care of yourself....

Gayle

I don't really see it as a flex when it's a major component of your job, like when a photographer is speaking on what lenses they have and what they prefer to use them for. Do they need be kept in cases to prevent dust from getting to them? How do you determine if you like how you sound on them? Like do you have a go-to shorter method/song to test or is it something that takes some time? Only thing I can really relate to using in that pic are scissors, stupid freaking hex keys, and lens cleaning wipes. Excellent choice in lens wipes ๐Ÿ‘

MediocreAtBest

What's your favorite quality that you look for on a microphone?

Courtney Walker

Very nice and fancy. Little tip to make it look more tidy and organized (at least from the outside): Baskets or some kind of non see-through boxes. You just have to label them to see what's in there.

naschpanda

Weird, random , but interesting question I wanted to ask you on the streams but never gots the guts to say this I don't know why but here it is, are you actually going to be relaxing, chilling or being busy the weekend or other options is you be getting an new windshield for your Telsa? (You have told us about what happened to your car when you went to Gabe's & Claire's wedding) (which super happy for them btws!) (Very happy that you attended their beautiful wedding) @Roomie

CK DeP

This is very random & all but just wanted to say that Tack Joel for you & August doing an Friday stream! You don't do Friday streams but this one was very cool, fun! & bigger Tacks for taking some time to answer questions in chat & you've saw, read , replied , answered 8 of my questions all in one day stream. That's a record for me!! Haha PitchyAppleJuice4Joel is my user on Twitch. Not to sound mean or braggy about it just letting you know that your answers & knowledge, stream & laughs with us & August has made my Friday even funnier, funner, especially when I was at work all day you have made it more special! Have an amazing chill weekend! Rest , you deserve it , for all these amazing uplaods, posts, updates that you give us , you deserve a break, rest! Enjoy the holidays (if you do of course celebrate it ,if not it's cool) @Roomie

CK DeP

Itโ€™s cool to have fancy high end things sometimes especially if itโ€™s for your job. Makes it more fun and easy. These look very nice! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป You have a nice weekend as well! Iโ€™ll be working ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Shauna

Haha same here, it's like I wanna rearrange those wires, chords , get those velcro thingy and tie them separately or together and put them in way back so that you can't see them as much lol๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

CK DeP

Hahah same haha

CK DeP

I want to reach into that picture and tidy up your shelves a bit. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Neat to see all that stuff though!

loonylovesgood

Just wondering if your songs such as "Lemme Tell U" , Bit By Bit , I Don't Know What I'm Doing, your re-edition to Justin Bieber's Stay "Used" , Photograph , Everywhere With You , Wishing I Could Go Back - more , will those songs be fully songs and will they ever be released for us like on YouTube, Spotify? Especially the So Selfish one, lol I know that you've been working on that song for quite awhile but it'll be super Worth It Haha get it your song Worth It lol okay I'll shutup now haha!๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿคฃ @Roomie

CK DeP

What makes a mic better or worse for your specific voice? How does that work? And how do you know a flattering vs. unflattering one?

Jessistache_73

Ohh okay lol haha thanks Joel! Haha sorrys for my qs , I just am trying to get some answers, information on what music equipment is best on "low" budgets but don't wanna do cheap things if that makes sense.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽถ @Roomie

CK DeP

Cute lol And displaying them would actually be dope ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Aubrey Danielle

It's just full of random stuff I should go through lol. Maybe one day I'll get to it...

Joel Berghult

camera lens I believe

Joel Berghult

You too have an amazing weekend ๐Ÿ™‚ Before I started watching your channel I didn't really know how big of a difference different microphones can make on a voice.. or that different voices benefit from different mics...so this is still interesting even though I'm not a singer๐Ÿ™‚ But this is probably very useful information to those who sing or make videos ๐Ÿ™‚

JustSomeJK

ye it's in the studio! Just out of the camera's reach

Joel Berghult

Thanks for the interactive stream today. Lots of good roomie time with the fans today.

StevaniAscends

the mics are in the basement lol at some point I'll do another video w them

Joel Berghult

I didn't know that you had an walk-in - closet just for your mic's, equipment. That's very interesting to me. Maybe you can do an video more on it on your music channel or whenever you get organized with your channels. Of course not forcing just saying that'll be cool to see.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽถ @Roomie

CK DeP

Itโ€™s like an excited proud kid showing off their favorite toys while giving a room tour to their new best friend whoโ€™s visiting for the first time.. Or a model on a game show trying to get the audience to โ€œoohโ€ and โ€œahhhโ€ the prizes. ๐Ÿ˜„ In all seriousness though, those look neat! Have you thought about displaying them (like trophies) in your recording room? Will you do a techie microphone comparison demonstration with these for us some day? What ever happened to the 100 microphones from the โ€œ100 micsโ€ video?

Expired Coupon

Is that your mic, shelving unit thingy and is it in your video , streaming room? Didn't notice that in your videos or streams if it is lol Is that video, streaming , recording room have any closets or another room or is it walking in room? @Roomie

CK DeP

Love the nerdy posts. What is more interesting is that you appear to have a walk-in closet just for microphones. That's the real flex. Have a good weekend and have some fun!

Cas

What's those black things on 2nd shelves? Is that more mic's or something? @Roomie

CK DeP

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

Stephanie Bruso

Aweee, noooo Step!! Feel better soon! Drink plenty of water or teas, rest alot , chill in bed watch Netflix or something.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

CK DeP

Have an amazing weekend Joel, get some rest you've been working so hard for us!๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘ No, doesn't seem like any flex for me, I love it when you describe or give us info on musical instruments, equipment , etc. Yeah their pretty high in prices ranges but totally worth it I feel like, isn't that the saying of the better sound, quality is better than a cheaper one and not so great quality, etc. That's amazing how all these amazing companies are noticing you , giving you their products to Tate, try them out , stuff I think that's very cool. Even tho I don't have ANY microphone equipment only my so called "great quality" blue tooth one I've had since 2016 or so but it's getting older and less good sounding like so I needs to invest in new mic but have no idea which one is better for sound, voice , etc. Tho I wouldn't pay THAT much for one but maybe like the 2 or 3 hundred dollars ones I might consider it. There's some good ones i think on Amazon, do you think that should invest in that? Or maybe should I get another "cheaper" microphone or something or wait till I can save up for the expensive ones do you think it'll be worth it if I do that? @Roomie

CK DeP

What would you suggest for a beginner singer working with just a mac? Maybe thatโ€™s a good way to show these off? Suggesting which type of mix for which kind of situation and setup

Airyckah Lane

It's not a flex, it's good you have the opportunity to try out different mics for your singing. The trusted SM7B is a staple YT starter pack requirement, along with the Sony camera. But when you are performing you want something that suits you vocally. I guess the better the microphone suits your singing style the less tweaks have to be made in production?

Clair (Teampanda)

This was a surprisingly interesting read for something not relevant to me lol. And not a flex at all, you need these for your career.

Becky Lorion

I love these nerdy posts, keep them coming.

Mari

Ahhhh, that shelf has me triggered. Very organized ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ And THATโ€™S so cool! You should share more when you get stuff because we may have never heard of them before. Maybe something that could go on the more music channel eventually? ๐Ÿ˜ Also, youโ€™ve worked hard to get where you are Mr. Official! Allow yourself to enjoy it without guilt, please ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ Cheers๐Ÿฅ‚

Aubrey Danielle

Thanks for sharing Joel! I don't know much about microphones but it's was interesting and what I like about you sharing these kind of things with us is that we always learn something ๐Ÿ˜Š

Jureth

Ya it does the job and is affordable, no complaints here until it clips cuz I get loud playing horror games ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Vikki

Absolutely interesting. I now use the Beyerdynamic M90 Pro X because of the same reason - harshness in the mid parts of my voice. This one does the job quite well for me, a few Lewitts I tried also work but are a bit more expensive.

Elke

Doesn't feel like a flex to me. Beside the fact that it's not really for us to judge, they're EQUIPMENT for your JOB. Better equipment = better product (videos, music, etc). And yk how companies are...they benefit from just "product placement" in videos. Even tho I don't do anything relevant in my life, it's still cool to lead new stuff.

Dannielle O'Neill

AT2020 is great! Really no urgent need to upgrade that.

Joel Berghult

Have an amazing weekend Joel. Iโ€™m sick with covid so this was entertaining to read lol

Stephanie Bruso

One day I hope to upgrade to a better sounding mic for my voice, but for now my AT2020 does the job

Vikki

That's so cool! Then you can at least try them and let others know how they work lol
