April Episode Three - Late Night With The Devil

Is this new possession flick gonna keep you up all night?! Or is it--despite the title--another one that should have called it an early eve?! Tune in to find out!

Comments

I love Joe but it’s hard to take a person opinion seriously when the hate the Beatles and love frank zappa

David Bevins

Will give another shot - thanks Larkin!

Mike Wills

Movies can get overhyped too, so by the time you see them you come out like “that’s it?” Which is what happened for me with this as well.

Larkin Hill

Hahaha same, and sounded on point actually. That demon head was an absolute atrocity. What the ever loving fuck man.

Larkin Hill

Midsommar is awesome Kevin (and Joe) — at least in my opinion. But yeah Late Night was a big disappointment to me. I think the hype got carried away and it transformed into one of those groupthink things, where people like it because others do and/or they think they should.

Larkin Hill

Yeah it does get better. I don’t think it was great though, and it reeked a little of wokeness, but it was still a solid series.

Larkin Hill

In conclusion, Joe's mind is a terrible thing to taste. And his opinion on movies is questionable. And Corrina stole that podcast from him. Now I don't listen to it b/c she annoys me without Joe Joe Joe.

D'Artagnan Flewelling

Rewatched it, still liked it quite a bit. Wife’s first viewing and she did not care for it. In conclusion, Midsommar stinks!

Kevin

Joe, I don’t expect you to reply to ny comment that I posted earlier, I just want to say, that much like the Mothers Day Tastebuds, I’m glad this got everyone chirping. I have my opinions on the movie and I do think you guys missed a ton of social references you may or may not be aware of, but I love the response on the comments and I think this could make for an interesting rehashing with viewer interaction. Love you both! Cheers!

Nick Gonzalez

Thanks Dude, backatchya

Barton Fink

As a fellow struggler -- keep on keepin' on, buddy.

Mike Wills

Am I the only one who couldn't get through the first episode of Baby Reindeer? Jesus Christ it was painfully uncomfortable... Does it get better? When the woman said her dish was "beef curtains" really lost me when I was barely hanging on due to severe cringe-worthiness.

Mike Wills

thanks for the response, Joe. i appreciate the clarification. i still disagree with the accent drop and the voice modulation, but i guess there’s a chance i could be misremembering if you’re so confident on that point, and i suppose then i’d owe the thing a rewatch. additionally, it was not my intent to imply that it’s your job as the viewer to decide how to properly immerse the viewer in the found footage gimmick, or how to portray demonic possession (imo, if it ain’t broke, why fix it) either way, i agree to disagree. love you guys and i can’t wait for the next round of eps!

Louis

I just want to say thank you to Pat and Joe for being so candid and honest about the struggle that is life. As a struggler myself, it brings me some comfort. There aren't many pods out there with hosts that keep it real. All the tv/movie talk is great of course, but I also appreciate this aspect of the show.

Barton Fink

Ahhh u get it

Lee Ellis

It's not fucking scary ypu dummies

Lee Ellis

Argue argue argue! It's not fuci g

Lee Ellis

Louis and Kevin, This is Joe. Allow me to begin by saying I appreciate your patronage and that I have never responded on here to a contradictory comment on here. However, given your views on this "movie"... 1) The clairvoyant loses his accent when he's overtaken by the massive surge. That happens. Now, maybe it's an actor unable to maintain an accent, but it happens. 2) I never claimed world building was joking the joke. Joking the joke is layering a suspension of disbelief or exaggeration with a second suspension of disbelief or exaggeration. This is done several times in the film. 3) I never said the hypnotist being a skeptic was a problem, I said he was a shitty actor. 4) The voice is modulated. It's two separate voices being run through the same lame-ass effect. 5) I want the demon to be portrayed with originality. It's not my job as the view to figure out how that should have been done, but it's certainly the job of the writer and director to not rip-off 50-year-old tropes. 6) I didn't suspend my disbelief during the commercial breaks because the movie goes out of its way to tell my those sections are "caught on tape" when they're shot with multiple camera coverage. That's bad directing, writing, or a combination of both. 7) Dear Kevin, we didn't miss shit. The movie sucked. P.S. Please make note that Pat initially liked it. He changed his opinion on a rewatch, just as you might.

We'll See You In Hell

Man guys, you 1000% missed this one. Nuts, just reads as you guys didn’t want to like it going in because it was popular and people were digging it

Kevin

i usually end up agreeing with Joe, but i’m clueless as to how he was just completely wrong about this film. to recounting details of the film flat-out incorrectly, to not bothering to explain his acidic opinions, this episode made me feel like they watched the film with their eyes and ears sewn shut. was Joe so gung-ho on hating this movie that world-building in single setting narrative is now considered “joking the joke”? the characters were sensibly written and easy to understand, the “hypnotist” being a skeptic was pretty much explained how right to the viewer, the medium didn’t “lose the accent” as Joe incorrectly claims, the demonic voice was in fact dubbed and not modulated as Joe also incorrectly claims (which begs the question, how the fuck do you want demons to be portrayed in film?), and aside from the obvious 20 year old playing a 13 year old, i thought the acting was fine, especially from aussie actor ian bliss. the only point i agree with was the immersion breaking cinematography during commercial breaks, but i suspended my disbelief for the sake of the fun narrative. same deal with the ending. i’d take bone chilling visuals and a jarring aspect ratio change while delving deep into the films titular character over it just ending with the demon killing them all violently on air. disliking a film because you can’t follow the plot is one thing, but at least try to dislike it for sound reasons instead of making shit up.

Louis

Hahah Pat talking about his approach to the the vomiting black bile scene really made me laugh. “Maybe $5 for the black shit budget. Then $149995 to the demon head exploding”

Tom E

I thought the filmmakers of 'Late Night with the Devil' did a great job of putting me in that headspace of late 70s/ early 80s Public Access television (pretending that Jack was competing against J. Carson was a mistake though). Dasmachian was great; I liked the cheeky acting from the Carmichael the skeptic and Gus, the sidekick, as well. Yes, there are legitimate holes in the plot, but the harsh criticism from the boys seemed unnecessary. At this point, I think I'm going to take Joe's opinion with a grain of salt, cause it's too contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. This is a movie that most of you should be able to enjoy without feeling the need to get up on your Rex Reed high horse to tear it apart.

Shmomar

Drive away dolls easily one of the worst movies I’ve seen this year or ever

Plugugly138

Would highly recommend Challengers to anyone who hasn’t see it. Really like Guadagnino as a director and I think he fucking killed it with this film. Beautifully shot with 3 fantastic performances from the leads.

KT1000

This is another example of a movie with a lot of hype and underground/cult type of fanfare, which means Joe is gonna go in to this movie with his arms crossed, specifically looking for nit picks. He hates so many movies before even seeing them.

Ricky Coogan

Drive-Away Dolls was really bad.

Ian

Tha Boys never cease to amaze me! Lol with their love of older Late Night talk shows, I can’t believe how much they’re picking this movie apart! A unique 90min horror. Not saying it’s a 5/5 but I really enjoyed it. Thought it was a fun watch especially at home. My hogs up!

Don Juan De La Nooch

I agree! I thought they nailed the 70s style and the way late night shows were back then. It was over the top and ridiculous at points but that's why I loved it lol

Melanie St.George

Right 😆 gotta love him!

Melanie St.George

The clip of Tyson and the scientists taking about simulation is 10 years old. And I’d like to point out that the scientist who said he saw binary code was doing the research on a… COMPUTER model of the galaxy. Really, you looked closely at a computer program and found binary code? That’s like saying “I was researching a forest and I kept finding wood! We must live in some sort of wood simulation.” Some of these scientists are real dumb.

Michael Whitsett

Joe, I also just bought a house by myself and I feel like we are going through the same existential crises… BOYS you are not alone.

Msmaynaise

I was excited for this one. Always love a nostalgic, throwback horror flick but, I have to agree with DeRosa on this one.

Logan Whited

Wow, can’t believe you guys missed so much in this one! I’m not gonna champion this movie cause I thought it was just fine. But all the comments Joe had about the cult stuff is linked to the real life references to Bohemian Grove. The cult and the grove are two different things showing that the demon was channeled both when he “sold his soul for ratings” amongst the elite and in the Hollywood sex cult suicide pact where the girl was. All the comedy is done in the stale acting and references to other films. Don’t you guys talk about how bad Dick Cavett and all those 70s shows were? Watch the cast of Husbands on Dick Cavett, it’s unwatchable. These talk shows have always been corny and dishonest which is why I laughed when the skeptic succumbed to evil. The fact Pat shared that this only had $150k for effects made me love it that much more. I could go on, but again I had plenty of faults with this movie myself, but Joe has to reconcile knocking movies for both taking risks and doing tried and true tropes. He says “just do this thing. Make this character do this. Have this happen.” What’s the point of watching a new movie if they just do the same beats over and over.

Nick Gonzalez

I liked this, especially the tone-atmosphere/70s horror vibe. But it did disappoint me towards the end. I just expected it to result in more. Maybe became overhyped for me. Very possible as I didn’t watch until it hit shudder the other day. But still, pretty good.

Larkin Hill

Anyone else think of Lewis blacks head blowing up in inside out?

Brett bowden

Joe? In a bad mood? C’mon…

Kramer Vickaryous

Oh boy I should’ve listened to the intro first before I commented a glimmer of positivity.

Nick Gonzalez

I absolutely loved Late night with the devil. It was a fun ride. Maybe joe was in a bad mood when he watched😆

Melanie St.George

Let’s gooooo boys! Just what I needed! Have a good weekend Hellions!

Nick Gonzalez

I'm just commenting here to be the first to comment this ep. Haven't listened yet, but I'm curious on the boys' take. I liked the film enough that I've seen it twice. Thought the last 15 minutes was bonkers. The wife and I met David Dastmalchian at my kid's graduation party in California a few years back. He went to high school with my baby mama. Nice guy. We've followed his career ever since. Anyway, keep em coming fellas. I'm a fan for life!

Nic D Beck

Nine years of this podcast in June I believe. I started listening at my desk at my first call center job. I’ve loved every minute. Heart emoji. Eggplant emoji. Splat emoji.
