In defense of his covers and otherwise straightforward singing, to me these are the kind of self-indulgent choices that are on brand for him. It’s always his birthday party, and he’s the kind of queen that will show off his vocal range in shifting harmonies. To me he pulls it off. He is charming enough for us to go with him and he is talented enough to wow even if we are also scratching our heads. I was reminded of Thom Yorke covering After The Gold Rush, recorded at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit concert. Yorke begins by begging off his own indulgent cover saying “This is Neil’s piano and it is making me do this”. Early doesn’t bother equivocating really. I admire that. Beyond it being on brand it also works as a commentary on the millennial generation like his standup. I see Early in the special as a kind of Neil Gaiman American God style representative deity of millenial narcissism who would of course have a nearly one man variety show.
