August Episode 2 - Elvis

Hunka hunka burnin' somthin' let's talk Elvis! The man, the myth, the new movie! Uh-huh!

Comments

Just discovered that Austin Butler, who plays Elvis, also was Tex Watson in Once Upon A Time.... Don't think the boys mention that when they were gushing over the Elvis film. In fact, I think Pat said he wasn't familar with this actor at all.

Fellas, just watched a fun, new horror movie from ifc called “Watcher”. Would love to know if either of you have seen it.

Goddammit, do I need to watch Elvis now?

Pat: "What...what movie are we talking about?" Joe: "Death Trap." Pat: "With Mike Cain and Chris Reed?" Joe: No. oh DEATH GAME!" Pat: "oh my GOD, dear GOD, Death GAME?" - laughed out loud in my office on that one

I’ve suggested the originals vs remakes before so I definitely think it’s worth episodes! To name a few: • The Blob (1958) vs The Blob (1988) • Dawn of the Dead (1978) vs Dawn of the Dead (2004) • The Thing (1951) vs The Thing (1982) vs The Thing (2011) • Suspiria (1977) vs Suspiria (2018) • Friday the 13th (1980) vs Friday the 13th (2009)

In Elvis, I think Tom Hanks was going for the subtleties of Colonel Parker’s speech mannerisms, like the way he pronounces “F”s and how he lets words “die out”. I also think he was trying to adjust for the turkey neck jowls Parker has, as opposed to any accent. For example, if you listen to Parker say “fair”, instead of something like an accented “feyah” he just says feh, with a soft uh at the end. Hanks’ attempt sort of turns into a sort of unique accent trying to recreate these unique traits of Parker. My question is- was it still better than hearing a distinctive Tom Hanks voice? I think so. It was strange but not distracting.

I think it was Nick Mullen I heard once give a really funny take on Knock Knock. He said something like, imagine if you made the gender swapped version of that movie. Some woman whose husband goes out of town, 2 men show up and rape her for several days then they're like "peace, bitch!"

I hate listened my way through the Nope review. I was wrong about you two. Your open minded analysis of Elvis was spot-on.
