The Northman specifically says he won’t kill women and children early in the movie. Which is why he doesn’t kill his mom. AND when he does kill his mom and lil bro- it shows how vengeance has changed him. When he decided to go back for vengeance after the pregnancy news- it further illustrates the point that you can have vengeance or a happy life- not both. Because he dies and doesn’t get to live happily ever after with his baby mama.
