Season 0: Theme Keycard #1 C23: EXP and Loots (END)

Dark Armed Dragon’s roar ripped through the distorted courtyard as it lunged, its shadow seemingly outpaced by its claws. In a Duel, this would usually spell the end for him, but this? This was no Duel, and Lenix's no stationary Monsters confined to one spot either. While he couldn't match Dark Armed's speed, Mimic’s Shapeshifting and the Master's Jujitsu more than compensated for Lenix’s lack of raw Stats.

Propelling himself off Dark Armed's back ridge, Lenix landed in a roll and burrowed into the soil, where he's immediately 'warmly' greeted by the howls of a host of Wailing Demons, their cries nearly driving him mad.

Above, the rampaging eight-meter-tall dragon bellowed in frustration before slamming its fists down, cracking the concrete pavement in the process. One of its claws even managed to scrape a patch of flesh from Lenix, though he's able to escape relatively unscathed.

The same couldn't be said for the apartment building, which had just been pulverized into a twenty-meter-wide crater of concrete and dust. It's almost an improvement… Almost.

Luckily, Lenix wasn’t sentimental about the old dump, and even better, he’d managed to maneuver behind Dark Armed, his path made that much breezier without the concrete slabs in his way. Reappearing behind the dragon, he twisted his body sideways, thin as a sheet of metal as he avoided the corrupted Darkness searing a trail where he'd been a split second before.

Six arms blurring with movements, he frantically dodged another of the Dragon's clumsy follow-up, only to freeze as he finally saw the Solar Eclipse overhead, caused by Hito's Field Spell no doubt.

That moment of distraction nearly cost him dearly as Dark Armed’s maw yawned open, revealing an endless, swirling abyss forming in the back of its throat. There it is—the familiar Effect that had once made countless Duelists rage-quit Yu-Gi-Oh; intentionally telegraphed for psychological warfare.

He should be able to Full Counter the Effect without breaking a sweat, yet a tiny, annoying voice in the back of his mind kept… Whinning what-ifs.

What if you miscalculated the timing?

What if the Skill failed?

What if—

'Enough of this pussyfooting!' Lenix thought, cutting off the endless stream of doubts and bracing himself for inevitable impact as he met the Cataclysmic Breath.

“What are you doing?! Use your Effect again, Dark Armed!”

The Dragon looked about as thrilled as any chained Beast forced to perform tricks, but it obeyed.

Lenix’s mind raced as he prepared to Full Counter the second Cataclysmic Breath, but the overgrown lizard seemed to have learned from its earlier mistake. Instead of the drawn-out Charge, it immediately spat out the Abyssal Breath, too fast for him to react with his newly acquired Skill.

Shapeshifting on pure reflex, Lenix flattened himself against the ruined ground, but the attack still grazed his armor, atomizing a large chunk of his chestplate and an arm. The pain, the fear and the white-hot anger that surged through him were instantly neutralized by the familiar calm of [Gamer's Mind] as he slipped into a fissure to avoid a clumsy kick from one of the observing Spirits, locking gazes with its slitted eyes.

Darkness blurred his vision, and the battlefield suddenly dissolved into a puddle as memories of him ever knowing, acquiring and using his [REDACTED] dissipated with all the grace of a wet fart…

By the time he came to, which admittedly wasn't that long, he had completely forgotten what he wanted to do. The congregating DARK Energy in his palm sputtered out instantly with the loss of concentration. 'What was I—?'

Lenix blinked in confusion, refocusing on the smugly-smirking Diabolos and the impatient roar of Dark Armed Dragon. Right, fight. That was the plan. What was he planning to do with that Dark Energy again? Lenix clearly recalled using a Skill, but the name only drifted further into the recesses of his mind the more he tried to reach for it.

Thoroughly annoyed but far from giving up, Lenix plunged his hands into the churned earth, grounding himself as he activated the Continuous Spell: 'Grand Summoning Rite'.

This was the In-Universe Summoning Method, the same Magic that ancient Mages etched into their stone slabs, and the very power that had previously allowed Lenix to call forth the swift Flying Kamikiri and even the mighty Nephthys at a fraction of the cost of Vorona Conjuration.

The Rite itself haf been bound to a thin, cool sheet of metal he kept tucked against his neck which read: Pay 8000 DE to Summon Monsters and use Traps and Spells, a Conduit created by draining almost thrice the amount the Blazing Phoenix had required to complete her Fusion.

Short and simple, just the way Lenix liked it. Although the Grand Summoning Rite did take up a Slot on his board, there was no real limit to the amount of Monsters or Spells the Mages could use in reality, so long as they had the DE to support the Monsters and enough space on their DiaDhank, of course.

With a casual swipe of his hand, Vorona shimmered into existence, not just as a simple Duel Disk, but as an entire ornate Throne upon which Lenix casually rested. One arm flung carelessly over the high back, two more draped over the armrests, and another to prop up his chin, Lenix leaned back to survey the wreckage and suddenly understood why Supervillains were always found lounging in ridiculously oversized chairs.

I can get used to this.

Looking down at the still-rampaging Dark Armed Dragon and Diabolos, his grin widened at how small; how utterly insignificant his view made these Colossuses seem.

Oh, I can definitely get used to this.

His high plummeted when he saw his DE displayed on one of the many see-through screens framing his vision.

DE: 27,238/38,400

This meager amount wouldn't last him much longer, which meant it was time he locked the fuck in. “Kamikiris!“

“I've studied your Duels, Mr. Owens!“

Guarded by a Level 3 Plague Wolf that had materialized beside Darkest Diabolos and Dark Armed, his opponent hurriedly scurried behind the Dragons and smugly taunted. “You have one amazing Monster and relied mainly on utility! All the Spirits you have access to are fodders! Even your strongest Insect (Doom Dozer) is only a measly 2800 ATK! You're done, you hear me?! You're fucking finished! I'll carve you up like you did my brother!”

Will you now?

Back straight, Lenix mentally commanded the Kamikiris to hurl themselves at Dark Armed Dragon’s bladed hands. They obeyed without hesitation, a swarm of green streaks impacting the monstrous claws with sickening splatters of chitin and ichor.

Malevolent Beasts they might be, even Dark Armed Dragon and Darkest Diabolos appeared momentarily taken aback by the sheer insanity and wastefulness of the tactic.

“Have you gone mad with fear?“ Hito shrieked, his composure starting to fray.

Fear? Fools. What do I have to fear from trash?“ Lenix drawled, gesturing dismissively as a golden Ritual Circle blazed to life right under Hito's feet.

“Wha—?!“ The criminal yelped, eyes widening in alarm.

Fortunately for Hito, the Plague Wolf protecting him was quick to react, lunging to yank its Summoner out of harm's way just as blazing fire erupted, licking at the air where Hito had just been standing.

Wreathed in black smoke, the Plague Wolf snarled, snapping and breaking its fangs against the flaming Chains binding it, but as a lowly 1000 ATK, how could it possibly struggle free of Nephthys?

Then, its muscles visibly swelled, nearly doubling in size in a matter of moments.

Its already distended veins throbbed with a rapid influx of Infected Blood which stained the underside of its ragged fur a deeper shade of violet.

If only the changes stopped at that. Instead, the bone-like protrusions along its back began to thicken and elongate until they encased the Zombie in it entirety.

With another furious snarl, the Zombie thrashed, enhanced strength allowing it to shatter half of the Chains restraining it, only to be encircled by Solid Plasma which quickly burnt the ragged fur from its unnatural flesh.

Even with such a monstrous increase in strength, a power that came at the cost of its eventual annihilation, the Zombie was still no match for Lenix's new Ace.

The Phoenix violently snapped its neck, causing the Plague Wolf to dissolve into blackened wisps that his Monster wasted no time devouring, effectively ‘Banishing’ the Zombified Spirit and Strengthening herself in the process.

Blazing Phoenix of Nephthys

ATK: 3000 » 4000

Hito, of course, hadn't remained idle during the Blazing Phoenix's emergence. He commanded Diabolos and Dark Armed Dragon to engage the fiery beast while unleashing his army of Torment Phantoms upon Lenix.

(Un)Fortunately for both, the lack of board limits wasn't a one-sided advantage; it benefited their enemies just as much.

'I don't even have to waste DE on them… Neat.' The armies of Torment Phantoms clashed in a spectacular, display; shadowy forms tearing into each other until all that remained of the Spectres were dissipating wisps of darkness.

Mindful of his DE, Lenix unequipped Mimic, then while Hito's Phantoms were busy with his, rose, casually scooped a few half-crumbled bricks, before walking forward and taking aim, steps cushioned by the constantly solidifying Cubes beneath his feet.

Veins bulged across all five of Lenix's forearms as he raised his knee like he's being paid to do it, then gleefully hurled the jagged rocks at his heedless opponent.

With Lenix's pitiful 450 ATK, his throws wouldn't put much of a dent in the big Monsters, if any at all, but their helpless, fragile Summoner? Bastard couldn't run even if he wanted to. Scanning the battlefield, the Gamer finally located his opponent behind a pile and snorted. “Hito? More like sitting duck.“

The first rock shattered the top of the makeshift cover; the second tore straight through the boulder Hito was using for protection. The next three, however, slammed into a Torment Phantom instead.

There's no concept injuries in Duel Monsters, but this was a real battle.

The sharp edges of the rubble ripped through the Phantom, tearing chunks of its ethereal body away. The assault was not fatal, but the Spirit had visibly weakened.

Just then, a pained screech drew his attention to Nephthys' predicament.

Whirling around on the platforms, Lenix frowned spotting his Blazing Phoenix pinned between Dark Armed Dragon and Darkest Diabolos. 'Right…' This wasn't a Duel. While their individual ATK might be lower than the Blazing Phoenix, there's still a chance Nephthys could be defeated, however minimal it was, and it'd appear probability wasn't on his side tonight.

Leaping from one platform to another, Lenix arrived atop the two Dragons just as Diabolos used its effect on Nephthys, causing her ATK to plummet.

'Strange… It also doesn't need to Tribute?'

“I see. So that's how it works.“ He was wondering how exactly forcing someone to place a card back on their Hand back to their Deck translated to a physical action in this world.

For a Dragon of its size and drip, Darkest Diabolos sure liked to play dirty.

Pulling up his Skills on the interface, Lenix traced a finger down the holographic list until he found it—”[FO@L C0•NT3R]?“

A sharp, pounding headache hammered behind his eyes, causing him to gnash his teeth in pain. Quickly averting his gaze from the Skill's listing, Lenix groaned. He had hoped to use the Skill to turn the tide, but no matter. Equipping Mimic again, he took a step back before leaping on top of Darkest Diabolos, only to phase through it like he'd a cloud.

“Shit!“ Bracing himself, Lenix targetted Dark Armed instead, expanding to engulf the Dragon whole. Without Dark Armed, Nephthys finally had a chance to retaliate.

Tossing him a thankful nod, the Blazing Phoenix pushed Darkest Diabolos off and went on the offensive. However, with her Effect suppressed, she's only barely a match for the Dragon Lord. Fortunately, by the time Diabolos was gaining on the Blazing Phoenix, a Mimic-Equipped Lenix had already gnawned the flesh off Dark Armed and gotten drunk on its DARK Essence.

'Yes!' Unlike all the previous Shapeshifts, this one felt… Fundamentally different. Rather than a surface-level change or Shapeshifting at all, it was a complete Transformation of Vorona and Lenix, altering the first down to her atoms, and her Wielder down to his very DNA.

With a guttural roar, Lenix's body writhed as strands of Vorona, now feeling less like metal and more like living tendrils of pure energy, stabbed into the nooks of his spine.

The once sleek, Duel Disk/Throne elongated and expanded, obsidian scales rippling across her surface like the night itself solidified as massive, leathery wings tore free from the Armor casting long, distorted shadows in the dim light of the eclipse.

Her head morphed into a terrifying draconic snout, devoid of eyes but aware still.

Lenix too felt himself shift subtly, his pupils narrowing into reptilian slits, and faint, black scales began to emerge around his eyes and down his arms.

Growls emanated from his expanded lungs, escaping his fangs and Vorona followed suit, completely in-sync as the connection between them strengthened and the last piece of the Dragon Mech Armor clicked in place.

From within the Dragon Mimic’s nape, a mental query shot out from Lenix towards his Phoenix: 'Nephthys, can you revert to your Base Form?'

The Blazing Phoenix responded with an affirming shriek. 'Do it.' A bit confused by her Summoner's command, but trusting his decision, Nephthys, in a spectacular burst of golden flames, clashed against Diabolos, erupting in a brilliant, fiery display that nearly flayed the Dragon Lord of his protective scales and took a good chunk of the Monster's Stats with her.

'Resummon me with the old Conduit.'

Securing the Blazing Phoenix in his GY, Lenix Set the Sacred Phoenix next as he charged towards his recently-Summoned Winged Beast and destroying her once again, then wrestled with the weakened Dragon Lord, whose eyes glinted red once more. “Do it, Nephthys!

Before Darkest Diabolos could capitalize and Tribute a Torment Phantom for its Effect, a blinding pillar of Sacred Fire erupted from the sky, and from within that vortex descended the Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys.

Unlike her previous form, this time her power was focused, specifically targeting Spells and Traps.

A wave of pure, cleansing energy washed across the battlefield, obliterating both Lenix's and Hito's backrows in an instant.

Even the intangible connection to Mimic and [Chopper's Battle Exoskeleton] were both severed, causing him to freefall to the ground.

Fortunately, his reflexes kicked in, allowing Lenix to twist his body mid-air and orient himself just before his hapless opponent, who frantically raised the last card up his sleeve, literally. "I Summon—"

Before Hito could even finish, a swift, ebony blur erupted from Lenix's arm.

With a swing, Vorona now materialized as a razor-sharp edge along his forearm, severed the criminal's limb cleanly at the elbow. Using the momentum of his fall, Lenix then slapped the stunned criminal across the face with his own detached forearm.

Was it disrespectful? Perhaps. Useful? Not really, but damn was it enjoyable.

“Torment Phantoms!“ Even with the Field Spell now gone, reduced to smoldering ashes, the remaining Tokens were still present.

Ordering the Phantoms to form a desperate protective barrier around him, Hito could only watch in terror as Lenix pointed a clawed hand and commanded, “KILL HIM!“

Unlike Lenix, who possessed the agility and abilities to hold his own through avoidance tactics, Hito was just a fragile human being. A human who was quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of Phantoms descending upon him. “No- No! Let go of m—”

His scream was abruptly silenced as his jaw went flying, but it's not Lenix who did it. It was a Torment Phantom who resembles his late landlady quite a bit. “Holy shit, grandma… Dial it down a bit.“

'Like you're one to talk, Mortal.'

The Vengeful Spirit-turned-Torment Phantom hissed, her shadowy form contorting in what might have been annoyance at his comment, before resuming her butchering. Tilting his head to the setting sun, Lenix closed his eyes as pure catharsis washed over him. 'One left... One left.'

“'Hnnnng… 'ELP…'” Hito choked out, a mouthful of blood bubbling past his mangled jaw.

“No,” Lenix drawled, his voice devoid of mercy; gaze bereft of forgiveness. “You get what you fucking deserve.“

— [SK(GX)] —

Raw and bloody palms screaming with each grip, Ayumu finally managed to haul himself up the mountainside while stinging sweat poured into his eyes.

'What could I have done?' A normal man against that… That hellhole?

He’d have been crushed.

Thus, pathetic as it might appear to some, he’d run; fled really, and managed to preserve his tiny, insignificant little life.

“There's no way they'd find me here, right?”

He thought, sinking into the wild vegetation as he caught his breath and spread his arms.

“Enjoying yourself, you pathetic pile of lard?” The voice caused his eyes to snap open, greeted by the man they had tried to finesse.

“O-O-Owens…” Scurrying to his feet, Ayumu raised his hands in surrender and tearfully pleaded. “I swear, I didn't do anything. I was just tagging along! They forced me!“

“Is that right? They forced you?“

Chuckling in disbelief, Lenix raised Vorona and put his recording of the phone call on replay.

—Ayumu! What in God’s name are you doing, you moron!?

—She… She tried to shoot me!

Again, and again, and again, the recording looped.

There's no mistaking it; it was Ayumu's voice.

“Now, call me crazy, but that doesn't sound forced to me. Sounds more like Hito was trying to stop you from hurting a defenseless girl. My girl. So either you're lying, or you're calling me crazy—which is it?“

Realizing he'd been had, Ayumu threw all caution to the wind and charged forth, flailing his arms like it'd do anything to his enemy. Punch after punch he landed, splitting Lenix's lips, but the joy at that smidgen of blood didn't last very long.

'He hasn't moved.' The criminal realized.

Despite his attacks; despite putting everything he had in that punch, 'Owens hadn't moved at all…'

“Fuck! Why wouldn't you just di—!“ Winding up for another punch, he successfully struck Lenix's jaw, but it's not his opponent who gave first, but instead his fist. “FUCK—!“

Collapsing onto one knee, Ayumu cradled his shattered fist, a defiant glare etched onto his sweat-streaked face.

“Even if I die,” He spat, “She still had my dick in her mouth. How’s that, you bastard? Did she tell you how much she loved it?”

Lips puckering up, Ayumu's met with a slap that sent him sprawling, now missing a tooth.

He landed hard, a wet stain spreading on the darkened soil beneath him. “Fuck… You…” A backhand slammed him flat, blood and saliva drooling the corners of his mouth.

“Fu—”

* Slap!

“Sto—”

* Slap!

“No—”

* Slap!

Blood bloomed on the rock beneath his head like falling petals at the beginning of Autumn as, one by one, his teeth were removed. “Y-You bastar—”

Knocked back by the sole of Lenix's shoe, the criminal wheezed and whimpered, crawling away before being flipped over like a turtle on land. “I-I'll see you in Hell.“

“Hell?” Putting his mouth next to the criminal's ear, Lenix chuckled. “You think you're going to Hell? No… No, no, no! Hell's too good for you… You'll go to Oblivion knowing your death and Soul will sharpen my 'blade'… EXP and Loots—That is the Purpose of your Existence. That's all you ever were and will be."

The shadow behind him stretched and contorted, solidifying into the silhouette of the Android as the card in Lenix's hand blazed with light.

An unnatural stillness fell over the mountainside, the usual sounds of wildlife abruptly ceasing as the creatures sensed the arrival of the Machine Spirit.

Then, in a flurry of feathers and frantic scurrying, birds burst from the trees and squirrels darted for cover. “Congrats, Jinzo. For wonderful your service, I bestow upon you Life.“

Thank you for your generosity, Contractor. You're kind, indeed.

The cries of the dying man wouldn't stop until three minutes later.

[Dungeon: Lair of Darkness (Cleared)]

Vorona whirred, tallying the results of his efforts.

Calculating Performance…

And then, the spoils.

Processing Rewards…

“211 EXP and 106 Gacha Fragments.”

Lenix had played Gacha games before and was able to escape with the minimal loss of 50 bucks.

He thought he's done with this Fragments bullshit, yet, “Ah, fuck.“

Whoever invented the Fragment Mechanism deserved a special place in Hell.

Lenix was just about to Draw the Gacha when a gust billowed past.

The British called it 'miasma,'

The Greeks 'bad air.'

But a more appropriate term for what just passed him would be 'evil winds.'

The air itself reeked of a rotting power that seemed to choke the wildlife, carrying upon each gust death itself as the vegetation began to yellow and wither beneath his feet… And it all originated from Domino City.

"What the Hell? Nephthys, what's going on?“

Ritual…

Instead of the Phoenix, it's Jinzo who responded to his inquiry instead, followed by the amused hum of the First Lord of Horror. 'You must work on the theoretical more, Mortal.'

'Someone's calling upon a great Power, and they are trying to Tribute the entire city.'

Nephthys explained as menacing Pillars sprouted from the city in the distant. If Lenix had to describe the Monoliths in 5 words, they'd be: Colossal, menacing, darker-than-black.

“Goddamn you, Skullie.“

Just then, a ding called to his attention.

[”Patch_v1.01.exe” has been successfully Installed. Click “Finish” to exit the Setup.]

And click it, Lenix did, before being led to two blinking new programs: 'Invade.exe' and 'Mission.exe.'

Besides them laid an unassuming, .txt files of the same name.

[INVADE.EXE - INSTRUCTIONS]

Invade.exe allows entry into other Gamer Worlds.

HOW IT WORKS:

WARNING: Invaded worlds are unpredictable. Hosts may be hostile. Proceed with caution.

“Instructions this time, huh? How thoughtful of them…”

Lenix quipped sarcastically while secretly appreciating the System’s inclusion.

With this new Program, he'd be able to escape safely if things got too out of control.

[MISSION.EXE - INSTRUCTIONS]

MISSION.EXE provides tasks/objectives in your or Invaded Worlds.

HOW IT WORKS:

- Missions and Tasks can be issued by Entities of said Universe.

- Reward and Mission criterias will be agreed upon beforehand.

- If a party attempts to rescind on an agreed upon Mission and Rewards, there will be consequences.

- All personal details of the Task Taker will be Classified, but this doesn't stop Entities from learning your name and identity.

DETAILS: Further details will be provided separately.

Clicking on the first one, he figured he'd lucked out with another free charge, then hesitantly hovered over 'Mission.exe.'

'High Priest, shall we engage the enemy?'

Hah, Lenix was wondering the same thing.

Ought he to?

What was he to do against another Gamer with seven years of experiences God only knew how many Loaded Saves?

He could flee. He should flee. It's the smart thing to do.

He owed this World nothing—it's not even his World.

Gnawing at the skin around his thumb, Lenix sighed, his gaze drifting back towards Domino City.

Then, something clicked in his brain.

He pulled up his Messages, wincing at the backlog of missed calls and texts. Sachi, Judai, Sugoroku, even Pegasus had all reached out, asking if he was okay and if he's available.

Yet, out of all those texts and voicemails, it was Jonouchi's that drew his attention.

"—Lenix, if you’re safe, we’ve managed to gather at Domino Hospital with a few other Duelists. Talk about bad timing, huh? Baby decided to show up the same day the world goes crazy."

Jonouchi chuckled wearily. "—Anyway, if you happen to pass by Yugi’s Grandpa’s place, could you maybe check in on him? Make sure he’s doing okay. And your girlfriend's still here. She seems pretty worried about you. A text when you get a chance wouldn't hurt—"

"Goddammit! God-fucking-damn it all!"

All he wanted was to play a children's card game!

'Is this how Judai felt? Or will feel?'

The weight of the world on his shoulders was a sensation Lenix could definitely do without.

The voicemail's abruptly interrupted by wet growls and guttural grunts, before cutting off completely.

Sighing again, Lenix opened Invade.exe and tapped 'Y', stopping just short of activating it as he bit down on his tongue, retching slightly at the coppery taste.

“Get in, and get out. Simple enough."

'High Priest? Shall we fight or flee?'

Hiking back down the mountain and towards Domino City, Lenix yelled, "What do you think?“
